Howdy all,

I'm trying to construct the dining table seen in Serenity's gally. I'm wondering, does anyone know or have an educated guess as to the material used to make it? I'm thinking Oak or Cherry will work (stained), possibly Wenge.. but any better guesses would be welcome.

Only just joined, and only just seen this thread - now two and a half months old! But I'll reply anyway - there may be others with the same question.

The wood has a very open grain, and is almost certainly a softwood. I'd hazard a guess at Parana pine. This has that type of grain, and very few knots (unlike most other softwoods). Parana also has quite a dark colour, although it would still need staining (and considerable distressing)to match the serenity original.

It would also be in keeping with the Western theme of the series - evergreens were far more plentiful than deciduous trees in the mid west - and most Western films show softwood furniture almost exclusively. (Of course, that may be so that it can break easily on the baddies head!

I'm ashamed to say that I've only just discovered Firefly. Introduced by a colleague - thanks Jenny!

Oh, and the obsessed part.. yup, we're all that way here.

I haven't seen or read anyone talking about wood and furniture since my Dad passed away. Brought back memories for me, thank you. My Dad was a cabinet maker and furniture builder in his (wished for more of!) spare time.
He spoke of the same knowledge of soft wood being used in westerns.

Gorramzero - glad I might have been a bit of help, and hope the info wasn't too late! As a matter of interest, softwood can be distressed and "aged" by gritblasting, which removes a little of the softer part of the grain and leaves the harder part slightly proud. Takes some doing, though, to get the right effect! I believe it's a trick used by Disney to get the aged look of some of the wood in their theme parks.

And Followmal - Thanks for the welcome, and the coat! I'll wear it with pride - although you won't mind if I roll around in the dust a little, just to wear it in? And ta for the cookies. Someone taught your daughter well! Wish someone would give FloralBunny a nudge - those strawbs sound nice.

Wow. A new browncoat who is a woodworker as well. We all sure love that table.

I see FM has fitted you out with a virtual coat from her store-room. Looks shiny!

If you must get it dusty, you're required to do it in an Alliance-friendly bar on U-Day. Start a fight, jump through the holo-window, and get into the scrum out front.

At our table we have just freshened up the fruit and the baked goods. Sandwiches will be passed around when they're ready. There are ice-planets in the cooler (four flavors) and Mudder's Milk in bottles in that crate over there.

Please try not to step on the ShipsCat or into her bowl.
