Has Joss worn out his story telling abilities ?

America loves a winner!

BIG HUGE fan of Joss, and always will be. But I hate even bringing this topic up at all, so I figured I'd post it here, in Troll Country, even though it's not meant to be anti Joss or anything he's done. Honest.

I'm coming near the end of having seen every episode of Buffy/ Angel and of course, Firefly. Buffy was the last thing I had to finish seeing start -> end, as I am a bit of a late comer to the whole Whedonesque party.

Point is, Joss, as great as he is, seems to simply recycle the same plot/ sub plot lines over and over in his shows. Just a few things found in common in a Joss show -

Crazy girl who can do incredible things

Home, family

Heartbreak

Death

Seemingly impossible love that eventually becomes possible ( Angel + Buffy , Spike + Buffy, Angel +_ Cordelia, Conner + Cordelia, Wesly + Lilah, Mal + Inara, etc.... )

Secrets which come back to haunt someone.

The loss of someone terribly dear to the show

Betrayal

...... you get the idea. I bet it's already been done, but I'd say there's a good 10-12 things which can be found in all 3 shows, and occuring in almost the exact same way.

I truly admire Joss and the other writers for what they've accomplished. No other group has ever pulled me into their world and made me care for their characters nearly as much as they. But when we see some of his other works, how easy will it be to spot a 'Buffy/River' character, or a 'Xander/ Wash ' ?

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

JOSSISAGOD

Joss seems to have made his peace with the fact that he can't write anything without putting a super powered teen girl in the mix. So, I'm okay with it. That's what I like about him, his shows are different from the other crap out there and that's what counts for me.

For better or worse, the themes you list are pretty general to the human condition... except perhaps the "Crazy girl who can do incredible things" bit. I can't imagine caring much for a series that avoids/ignore "home/family", for instance.

Now the "almost the exact same way"... well, perhaps Joss can work on that, we all have our burdens to bear.

Hell, I'm not bothered if it's he's a one trick pony or not (which I don't think he is) - cuz it's one hell of a trick! I find all his shows entertaining for the fact that he includes things that mean something to me, with a good dose of humour, excitement and sexy young women kicking ass. If that ain't good TV, I don't wanna know is!

There may be some similarity in the plot lines and themes. Joss writes about family "crew" and maturity, gaining and understanding the way of life.

What I see that distinguishes Joss and writers of his caliber is the style.

In "Jaynestown" when Jayne turns to his adoring masses and says, "There are just people like me", that was, to me, an excellent scene. So short and simple, but to the point. Seeing those scenes are what makes the difference between a good show and a great one. Joss does it again and again. I think he will continue to do it in whatever show or movie he creates in the future.

Edit: Why is this in Troll Country?
