Perhaps the M represents something other than Male. It does not state Male.
There are, I think, 2 states which have 3 options for gender on IDs. I think one of them is Kansas, which allows Male, Female, or Other.
Maybe the reproductive mechanics of the visitors does not translate to Male and/or Female exactly, and another option is used.
