Baloney.

Were YOU influenced by Russian propaganda?

Did you even see any?

Bc the only propagnda that I saw .... and it was relentlessly shoved in my face 24/7/365... was about "kompromat" and pee–gate, and the only collusion that was apparent was between the Hillary campaign, MI6 and mysterious actors like Mifsud, our alphabet agencies, and the M$M.

Really. If you, personally, saw any Russian propaganda, bring it here.

That accusation ... which BTW was never tried in court, since the DOJ withdrew its charges ... looks to be just more deep state propaganda.

But thanks for bringing it to the board.

You are out of your tiny mind, Signym. I can't reduce the motivation for this war to a bumper sticker slogan. Still, my first effort is that the West is fighting Russia in Ukraine because of what Russia did to Europe and Korea in the aftermath of WWII. The West isn't letting Russia get away with it one more time. And Russia's constant threats to nuke the West are a reminder of what is happening in the subconsciousness of Putin. He will murder the West to restore Russia to the exalted position it had after WWII but no longer possesses. What is Ukraine's motivation to fight? Other than Russians murdering them today? Holodomor. Russia murdered millions of Ukrainians and Russia will do it again. https://holodomor.ca/resource/holodomor-basic-facts/

The evolution of the Ukraine War in 2025

. . . Recent polling by the Pew Research Centre shows a schism in support for Ukraine between Republican and Democrat voters: 49% of Republicans believe the US is providing too much assistance to Ukraine, as opposed to 16% of Democrats. A Republican win in the presidential race, as well as in Senate and House elections, could favour Russia. But this should not be considered a certainty. If a newly elected President Donald Trump can’t “end the war in 24 hours”, he could well turn on Vladimir Putin.

Ukraine and Russia will already be planning their 2024 winter operations and contemplating their offensive operations for 2025. There are a range of known variables that will impact on this strategic thinking and planning. Additionally, in a rapidly evolving technological and geopolitical environment, strategic surprises may influence the trajectory of the war.

Russia will continue to implement its strategy of subjecting Ukraine and its people to a death by a thousand cuts. And Ukraine, as it has throughout this war, will continue to adapt and seek new ways to not only destroy as much of the Russian military as possible but to also develop new strategic methods to convince Putin that his Ukrainian gamble will never pay off.

Open-source researchers analyzed satellite imagery and assessed that Russia has removed roughly 42 percent of Russian tanks from pre-war open-air storage since the start of the full-scale invasion.[62] The researchers reported on July 6 that the Russian military has removed roughly 2,500 tanks total from open-air storage since the start of the full-scale invasion. Russian forces reportedly removed roughly 115 tanks per month from open-air storage from February 2022 to July 2023 but have only removed roughly 60 tanks per month between July 2023 and July 2024. The researchers noted that the Russian military likely removed more tanks per month in the first 16 months of the war since the tanks were in good condition and could compensate for initial high tank losses but that the removal rate declined as the quality of tanks in storage declined. ISW continues to assess that Russia's reported tank “production” numbers in recent years largely reflect restored and modernized tanks drawn from storage rather than new production.[63]

Russian officials and information space actors are attempting to deflect responsibility for the Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital strike by making false claims about the missiles involved and the state of the hospital — all contrary to available evidence.

Footage taken by a bystander in Kyiv City shows the second before a Russian missile struck the Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital—Ukraine's largest pediatric hospital that treats thousands of patients, including cancer cases, daily.[4] The footage clearly shows a single missile flying at a sharp downward trajectory before making contact with the hospital building. Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) conducted a preliminary investigation of the blast site at Okhmatdyt and concluded that Russian forces used a Kh-101 missile to strike the hospital.[5] The Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital published footage showing extensive damage to medical facilities on the premises.[6] Falling debris from Russian missiles also struck the Isida Maternity Hospital in western Kyiv City after the initial strike on the Okhmatdyt hospital, and Russian missile strikes also damaged residential infrastructure elsewhere both in Kyiv and Dnipro cities.[7] The Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs has confirmed 22 deaths and 74 injured in Kyiv City and 11 deaths and 64 injured within Dnipropetrovsk Oblast as of the time of this publication.[8] Zelensky announced that Ukraine is convening an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in response to these Russian strikes.[9] Russia is currently the president of the UNSC.

X accounts propagated debunked narratives and Kremlin talking points about the war in Ukraine, such as Kremlin claims that parts of Poland, Ukraine, and Lithuania were “gifts” from Russia. The bot farm pushed other narratives in video format such as a video of Russian President Vladimir Putin claiming that the war in Ukraine is not a territorial conflict or a matter of geopolitical balance, but rather about the “principles on which the New World Order will be based.”

How ironic! The Moscow Times has a newsflash about the Moscow Times being outlawed!

https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2024/07/10/russia-outlaws-the-moscow-ti
mes-as-undesirable-organization-a85677

Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office has labeled The Moscow Times as “undesirable,” a designation that bans Russians from working with or having links to the organization, with criminal prosecution for violations.

“The work of the outlet is aimed at discrediting the decisions of the leadership of the Russian Federation in both foreign and domestic policy,” the office said in a statement.

The office also accused The Moscow Times of “publications containing unreliable socially significant information aimed at discrediting the activities” of the government regarding the war in Ukraine.

The “undesirable” designation bans The Moscow Times’ work inside Russia, puts staff members at risk of jail time, and criminalizes engagement with the outlet.

Russians have even been fined for reposting web links and articles published by "undesirable organizations," according to the independent Mediazona news website.

“Of course, we will continue with our work as usual: independent journalism. That's a crime in Putin's Russia,” The Moscow Times' founder Derk Sauer said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Putin's articulated theory of a slow, grinding victory in Ukraine is notably premised on accepting continuously high casualty rates, as exemplified by reported Russian losses accrued during two recent offensive efforts. In his July 9 article, Havrylyuk claimed that Russian forces suffered 5,000 casualties for just one district of Chasiv Yar, likely referring to Kanal Microraion (the only neighborhood of easternmost Chasiv Yar that Russian forces currently control).[22] Kanal Microraion is around three blocks wide and three blocks long, and the loss of 5,000 personnel for such a small piece of territory is indicative of the highly attritional way in which Russian forces are conducting their offensive operations. Ukrainian Kharkiv Group of Forces Chief-of-Staff Viktor Solimchuk similarly reported on July 10 that Russian forces lost (killed, wounded, or captured) 91 percent of the personnel they committed to fighting (reportedly amounting to roughly a division‘s worth of personnel) in northern Kharkiv Oblast at the start of the Kharkiv Oblast offensive in early May 2024.[23] Solimchuk also noted that Russian offensive efforts in Vovchansk, Kharkiv Oblast, have severely weakened the 138th Motorized Rifle Brigade (6th Combined Arms Army, Leningrad Military District).[24] Ukrainian and Western sources recently reported that the 83rd Airborne (VDV) Brigade suffered such devastating losses in Kharkiv Oblast that it is no longer combat-effective.[25] ISW cannot independently verify either Ukrainian or Western estimates of Russian casualties, but the recent increase in reports of entire Russian units becoming combat ineffective due to losses highlights the tactics on which Russian forces are relying on to pursue Putin's theory of a slow, gradual, grinding victory in Ukraine.

The Russians murdered tens of millions of Russians over political differences but per the Russians those murders have nothing to do with Russians murdering Ukrainians now. More specifically, the Russians murdered 4 million Ukrainians during Holodomor but per the Russians those murders are not the reason why Ukrainians are fighting to keep Russians out of Ukraine. And per the Russians, Nato's existence caused Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but Nato exists because Russia invaded Europe and would not leave and murdered millions of Eastern Europeans after peace was declared in WWII.

Signym, the Russians slaughter and enslave the people they conquer. The Russians are poor at administering lands they conquer which is not surprising because the Russians are poor at ruling Russia.

China & Russia threaten NATO after calls for Ukraine 'disappearance'

Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev chimed in, denouncing NATO's summit promise to grant eventual membership to Ukraine and said Russia should work towards the 'disappearance' of both Ukraine and the military alliance. In a social media post, Medvedev quoted in English from NATO's declaration at its Washington summit this week: 'We will continue to support (Ukraine) on its irreversible path to full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership.'

He went on, in Russian: 'The conclusion is obvious. We must do everything so that Ukraine's 'irreversible path' to NATO ends with either the disappearance of Ukraine or the disappearance of NATO. Or even better - the disappearance of both.' The Russian state has backed Medvedev's response, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov telling Russian news agencies today that the nation is planning 'response measures' to contain the "very serious threat" from NATO. He added that NATO was now 'fully involved in the conflict over Ukraine.'

Medvedev has repeatedly warned the U.S. and its allies that their arming of Kyiv could lead to a 'nuclear apocalypse'. Any decision on the use of Russian nuclear weapons would belong to President Vladimir Putin. But diplomats say the views of Medvedev, who is deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, give an indication of hawkish thinking at the top of the Kremlin which has cast the war as an existential struggle with the West.

Russian children wounded in Ukrainian drone attack – governor
A UAV dropped a grenade on five boys playing in the courtyard of an apartment building

Five children in a Russian town near the border with Ukraine were injured when a Ukrainian drone dropped an explosive on the courtyard where they were playing, regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Thursday.

The attack happened in Shebekino, a town in Belgorod Region north of Volchansk, the site of heavy fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces in Kharkov Region since May.

“An explosive device was deliberately dropped from a drone into the courtyard of an apartment building,” Gladkov said on Telegram. “There were no military installations at the site and no soldiers, but five boys, one of whom was only 8 years old.”

Remotely controlled aircraft have been widely used in the Russia-Ukraine conflict to take out targets such as tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, radars, fortifications, and even individual soldiers in the field. Drone operators are usually perfectly aware of what they are targeting.

Last month, a Ukrainian drone dropped a mortar shell on a Russian TV crew near Gorlovka, in the Donetsk People’s Republic, killing the camera operator and seriously injuring the reporter. Another Russian TV journalist was killed in April in Zaporozhye, this time with a kamikaze drone.

Ukrainian forces have repeatedly targeted Belgorod Region over the past two years, striking mainly civilians. Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested last year that the continued attacks would require the creation of a “buffer zone” in Ukraine’s Kharkov Region.

An artillery attack on Shebekino last month caused an apartment building to collapse, injuring at least six residents.

Two women who managed to escape from Chasov Yar have told RT about how the Ukrainian military deliberately targeted its own civilians in the hotly contested city.

Chasov Yar used to have about 12,500 residents before the conflict, but found itself on the front line after Russian forces took neighboring Artyomovsk (also known as Bakhmut) in 2023.

“They [Ukrainian forces] burned approximately 50 houses on our street. There are no houses left,” a woman who gave her name as Tatyana told RT in an exclusive interview. “It seems like they did it on purpose.”

Tatyana and her family hid in basements, but one day her husband went out for a smoke and was killed by a drone strike.

“It was probably a kamikaze drone, there were batteries and all sorts of tubes around him,” she recalled, through tears. “My son picked up his father. He was already dead.”
Russian troops are storming New York. Are you confused? Well, read this Russian troops are storming New York. Are you confused? Well, read this READ MORE: Russian troops are storming New York. Are you confused? Well, read this

After that, Tatyana and her son Kostya fled to another ruined house and hid there, but came under drone fire themselves. The first strike injured Kostya. The second buried them both in debris. Then a third one came and “everything went black,” Tatyana said. When she opened her eyes and looked at where Kostya had been, “there was no head,” only a red smear on the wall.

America could have crushed Germany after WWII yet didn't. In contrast, Russia crushed all the countries it occupied and will do the same to Ukraine:

When Roosevelt died in April 1945, so, too, did the Morgenthau Plan. For a brief period, it looked like President Harry Truman was going to consider the idea, as he signed Directive 1067 on May 10, 1945, which said America would "take no steps looking towards the economic rehabilitation of Germany [or] designed to maintain or strengthen the German economy."

This was short-lived, as Truman then signed Directive 1779 that July, designed to provide aid to Germany, instead. That same month, Morgenthau was forced to resign from his position in the Treasury, as he and Truman had too many differences in their political approach. Perhaps this is just as well - calculations show that, if the Morgenthau Plan had been implemented, nearly 25 million Germans could have starved. ( https://web.archive.org/web/20080414103548/http://www.un.org/Pubs/chro
nicle/2008/webarticles/080103_marshallplan.html
)

The approach implemented when World War II ended was about as far away from the Morgenthau Plan as possible. Instead of turning the Germans into a bunch of farmers with little-to-no advanced technology, it provided significant economic aid, so they could stabilize their country and recover from the conflict.

The Marshall Plan, as it was called, was highly successful and allowed Germany to rebuild in a way it was never permitted to at the end of the First World War.

What is the big deal about assassination plots by Russia?

Russian authorities reportedly attempted to assassinate leading figures in the European defense industrial base (DIB), likely as part of Russian efforts to disrupt and deter Western aid to Ukraine and Russia's wider efforts to destabilize NATO members. CNN reported on July 11 that five US and Western officials stated that US intelligence uncovered a Kremlin plan in early 2024 to assassinate German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger.[1] US intelligence reportedly informed the German government, which was able to foil the plot. CNN reported that the planned assassination against Papperger was one of multiple plans to kill European defense industry executives, but that the plot against Papperger was the "most mature." European authorities have reported that Russian actors and proxies have conducted sabotage and other hybrid warfare operations aimed at deterring and disrupting Western aid to Ukraine, and NATO and its member states have repeatedly warned about intensifying Russian hybrid operations on NATO member territory.[2]

What is the big deal about Russian plots to wreck ships?

Finnish authorities reported an increase in GPS "malfunctions" in the past week and that most disruptions to aviation and maritime GPS and radar originate from within Russia.[3] Finnish federal transport and communications agency Traficom told Finnish outlet Iltalehti on July 11 that GPS "malfunctions" have increased in the past week in reference to a specific incident in the Gulf of Finland overnight on July 10-11.[4] A Finnish maritime pilot reported on X (formerly Twitter) that he experienced severe GPS and radar malfunctions overnight while guiding other boats near Kotka and Hamina on Finland's southern coast.[5] The pilot published footage of his radar malfunctioning and reported that GPS was unavailable for 90 percent of the route between the Orrengrund pilot substation and Hamina harbor.[6] Reports of increased GPS and radar disruptions in the Gulf of Finland cohere with reports of Russian GPS jamming affecting Baltic states and other areas of Europe. Likely Russian jamming from Kaliningrad has previously jammed the GPS of a plane carrying then–UK Defense Minister Grant Shapps and forced Finnish aircraft carrier Finnair to ground multiple flights out of Finland.[7] The GPS interference in the Baltics forced Finnair to cancel flights to Tartu, Estonia until the Tartu airport implemented an approach solution for planes flying into the airport that does not rely on GPS.[8] Russia's apparent GPS jamming is likely part of Russia's intensifying hybrid campaign directly targeting NATO states likely aimed at undermining support for Ukraine and NATO unity.[9]

How Can Europe Reduce Its Military Dependency on the United States?

By Steven Erlanger | July 12, 2024, 9:03 a.m. ET

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/12/world/europe/nato-europe-military-r
ussia.html

European member states have made considerable progress in the last few years to restore more credibility to deterrence against Russia. But they began from a low base, having cut military spending sharply after the collapse of the Soviet Union and reacting with complacency to Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.

There is a lot more that the Europeans should do to become less dependent on the United States, NATO officials and analysts said this week during the alliance summit in Washington. That includes committing more money to defense, building up arms manufacturing and coordinating the purchase of weapons systems that could replace those now provided solely by the Americans.

With President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia busy with Ukraine and his military degraded by the fierce fighting there, European and NATO officials believe there is a window of perhaps three to seven years before Mr. Putin might be tempted to test the NATO alliance. But will Europe use that window to rearm? https://breakingdefense.com/2024/07/ticking-clock-northern-nato-defens
e-chiefs-see-ever-closing-window-to-prepare-for-russia
/

Here are four of the key gaps that the Europeans should fill if they are serious about reducing their dependency on the United States for their own defense.

1) Money

Nothing happens without money.

Ten years after NATO members pledged to spend 2 percent of gross domestic product on the military, two-thirds will do so by year’s end. But a third will not.

And while the NATO secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, insists that 2 percent “is a floor, not a ceiling,” a lot of planks are still missing, including Spain and Italy. The most important European allies, like Britain, France and Germany, have not firmly committed to spending at least 2 percent or more long term, while 2.5 percent or even 3 percent is what European defense really needs.

2) Troop Numbers
European militaries shrank after the Cold War, with many nations possessing what NATO officials call “bonsai armies.”

“European armies are too small to handle even the arms that they’ve got now,” said Jim Townsend, a former U.S. assistant secretary of defense now at the Center for a New American Security.

“The British and the Danes, to pick two examples, are good militaries, but they would not be able to sustain intense combat for more than a couple of weeks,” he said. “It doesn’t matter how good you are if there aren’t enough of you.”

The British Army is at its smallest since Waterloo; the German Army has been something of a joke since the Soviet Union died. Though it is making efforts to rebuild under Boris Pistorius, the defense minister, it needs 20,000 more soldiers to reach minimum readiness, and his request for a $7.25 billion increase in the 2025 defense budget was reduced to $1.3 billion. He said it did not match what “the threat situation” required.

NATO’s new force model, which its members agreed on two years ago, aims to make more than 300,000 troops available to respond to any contingency within 30 days (and over 100,000 in up to 10 days) to immediately reinforce the alliance’s eastern flank in the event of a crisis. But NATO officials concede that the alliance is currently considerably short of that number.

3) The Strategic Enablers
For Europe to defend itself with less help from America, it must fill some pretty big and expensive holes.

Ukraine has not only vividly shown that weapons stockpiles “have been too small, and that the production capacity has been delinquent, but it has also demonstrated serious gaps in our interoperability,” Mr. Stoltenberg said at the summit this week. “There is no way to provide a strong defense without a strong defense industry.”

That requires better coordination between NATO and the European Union, to ensure that there is less duplication, less squabbling by countries for contracts and more interoperability.

NATO is only ready for war, the study concluded, if it is a short one.

4) The Nuclear Umbrella
In many ways, this is the most sensitive issue. NATO, a nuclear alliance, relies on the American nuclear umbrella as the ultimate deterrent against a Russian attack. No one is suggesting that Washington intends to fold up the umbrella, but doubts inevitably arise about the willingness to use nuclear weapons to defend Europe and in what circumstances.

President Emmanuel Macron of France has said that his country’s interests have “a European dimension.” But French nuclear doctrine is strictly national, and France currently plays no part in NATO’s nuclear plans. Would France be willing to put nuclear assets outside France?

Similarly with Britain, which possesses only a submarine-based nuclear deterrent and is having trouble financing its modernization.

And then there would be serious questions for nonnuclear allies: Would they be willing to host nuclear facilities, or fly nuclear weapons on their planes or invest in more missile defense? Should there be some sort of “Eurobomb,” and who would control it?

“Let’s at least take this debate seriously,” Mr. Grand said. “Let’s talk about what France and Britain are willing to do.”

Ticking clock: Northern NATO defense chiefs see ever-closing ‘window’ to prepare for Russia

Five NATO defense chiefs laid out for Breaking Defense how they view the timeline until Russia could be ready to invade a NATO nation.

Armed with a marker and a white board, Estonia’s chief of defense jotted out what looked like gibberish, but to his mind was a simple algorithm that held the future of his country in the balance — a “formula,” Gen. Martin Herem said, for “when Russia is coming.”

Each of those variables is, well, variable — all except one.

“There’s only one factor that we can change: our readiness,” he said. “We can support Ukraine, but one day Russia is coming out.”

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on July 11 demanding that Russia withdraw from the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) and restore full control of the facility to Ukraine.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, Europe's largest nuclear power station, has been under Russian occupation since March 2022. Its position near the front line has led to heightened nuclear safety risks throughout Russia's full-scale war.

Ninety-nine countries voted in favor of the resolution, which "demands that the Russian Federation urgently withdraw its military and other unauthorized personnel from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and immediately return the plant to the full control of the sovereign and competent authorities of Ukraine to ensure its safety and security."

The resolution also condemns Russia for failing to implement safety protocols set out by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and calls on Moscow to allow IAEA inspectors full access to the plant's facilities.

"Today, another important step has been taken on the way to restoring respect for the UN Charter and international law," President Volodymyr Zelensky said on X.

"The resolution confirms the need for demilitarization and deoccupation of the ZNPP against the backdrop of Russia's failure to comply with the resolutions of the IAEA governing bodies."

NATO Is Helping Ukraine to Fight—but Not to Win

The Washington summit was heavy on promises but light on plans.

By Amy Mackinnon | JULY 12, 2024, 1:07 PM

https://foreignpolicy.com/2024/07/12/nato-summit-ukraine-russia-milita
ry-war
/

Russia’s war in Ukraine dominated the NATO summit in Washington this week as the alliance unveiled plans to intensify support for Kyiv and offer an “irreversible” path to eventual membership in the defense pact.

The measures announced this week—including the establishment of a new NATO command to coordinate training and arms deliveries, the delivery of F-16 fighter jets, and a new security compact—underscore efforts underway in Western capitals to shift support for Ukraine to a long-term footing as Russia shows little sign of abating.

Andriy Yermak, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s closest advisor, said Kyiv was “satisfied” with the outcomes of the summit, speaking at a side event on Thursday. “The alliance made real steps forward,” he said.

But the summit also highlighted a central tension in Western strategy to support Ukraine: Military aid has played a decisive role in enabling Kyiv to fend off Russian forces, but it has fallen short of enabling it to actually win the war.

“We’re basically propping up Ukraine to stay in the battle and make some advances and not outright win the battle,” said Liana Fix, a fellow for Europe at the Council on Foreign Relations. “There’s not a real strategy for the war.”

Allies along NATO’s eastern flank, most notably the Baltic states and Poland, have long called for a surging of support to Ukraine. But the allies with the deepest pockets and most sophisticated weapons systems—particularly the United States—have taken a more cautious tack in a bid to prevent an escalation spiral with Moscow.

The renewed support comes as Russian airstrikes have pounded Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, leading to sweeping power outages in recent months. On Monday, as heads of state and government departed for Washington, Russia struck a children’s hospital in Kyiv in broad daylight, a shot across the bow at the alliance. The new NATO measures come “at a critical time and will help Ukraine avert the worst-case scenario this year,” said Michael Kofman, an expert on the Ukrainian armed forces with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

“The main priority in all these announcements, particularly on the air defense side, is to negate the areas where Russia has a clear advantage,” said Eric Ciaramella, a former deputy national intelligence officer for Russia on the U.S. National Intelligence Council. On Tuesday, Biden announced that the United States, partnering with other countries, would provide five new air defense systems to Ukraine to help the country fend off Russian missile attacks. “It’s definitely necessary to allow the Ukrainians to stop the bleeding and start rebuilding,” said Ciaramella, now a senior fellow at Carnegie.

But analysts are skeptical that the measures announced this week can turn the tide on the battlefield. “The Ukrainians need more to win than just what we have set up,” Royal Netherlands Navy Adm. Rob Bauer, the chair of NATO’s Military Committee, told Foreign Policy on the sidelines of the summit on Thursday.

The Russian armed forces have bounced back faster than anticipated following their unexpectedly poor performance in the early months of the war and are quickly learning how to counter high-tech new weapons systems supplied by Ukraine’s Western allies.

U.S. officials believe that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ultimate goal of subjugating Ukraine remains unchanged more than two years into the war, moving his country’s economy onto a war footing. Nearly a third of the state budget this year is earmarked for defense spending, and shipments of artillery from Iran and North Korea have left Ukraine outgunned on the battlefield.

Putin Is Watching the West’s Indecision With Derision

By Pyotr Kozlov | July 12, 2024

https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2024/07/12/putin-is-watching-the-wests-
indecision-with-derision-a85687

Kyiv's Western allies have been unable to overcome their internal disagreements to decide whether to negotiate or fight Putin. The more visible this indecision is, the more brutally Russia will strike at Ukraine.

Some voices in the West say that a cornered Putin would be dangerous — and if left with no way out, the Russian leader will use nuclear weapons. They say whatever you do, Putin will win one way or another.

Putin is actively playing with and capitalizing on these fears.

While the West is talking itself into inaction by being unable to decide whether to back Ukraine wholeheartedly or push for negotiations, the Kremlin continues to successfully play on their divisions. And for as long as it feels that the external pressure is easing, instead of seeking compromise, Moscow will order attacks as brutal as striking a children’s hospital with a cruise missile.

Those siding with Russia are doing their "the sky is green and grass is blue" thing, but that's the way they are:

Russian Strike on Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital Was a 'Western False Flag': Claims Former Ukrainian MP

He explained that if Ukraine was successful in deflecting the missile that targeted the hospital, the world would not see the need for further air defense assistance for the nation.

"Let us assume that without exception, all the missiles that flew towards the city of Kyiv [on Monday] were shot down by Ukrainian air defense. Tell me, what will [President Volodymyr] Zelensky go to the NATO summit with then?" Kilinkarov said on the show.

He denied the claims that it was a Russian missile that struck the children's hospital in Kyiv on July 8, mirroring a narrative propagated by several disinformation outlets, despite expert analysis having proven that a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile caused the damages.

He stated that the evidence provided by the Security Service of Ukraine that points towards Russian culpability in the hospital attack could have been falsely produced by "anyone."

Unlike many outlets that claimed that the missile used in the strike was American-made and came from Ukrainian air defense systems, the former Ukrainian MP was quoted as saying that the attack on the hospital was carried out by "geopolitical players there who play their own games" allied with Ukraine.

Kilinkarov indicated that by blaming Russia for the devastating July 8 strike, Ukraine managed to garner further support at the United Nations Security Council and the recent NATO summit in Washington.

The Russian missile strike on July 8 has been deemed the deadliest attack by Vladimir Putin's forces in four months, involving a salvo of more than 40 missiles of varying classes that targeted five Ukrainian cities—Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Slovyansk, Kramatorsk, and Kryvyi Rih.

As a result of the strike, windows and doors of the 10-story main building of the Kyiv hospital blew out, leaving blackened walls. Blood was found spattered on the floor in one of the rooms.

A two-story wing of the facility was partially destroyed as well, with rescuers searching for survivors under the rubble.

Smoke billowed from the building while volunteers, emergency crews, and locals formed a human chain, passing stones and debris to each other in a frantic effort to reach potential survivors, it was reported by The Associated Press.

Latvian foreign minister: Putin is counting on West to get tired

https://www.voanews.com/a/latvian-foreign-minister-putin-is-counting-o
n-west-to-get-tired-/7693535.html

VOA: It has been 20 years since Latvia joined NATO. How does the country feel about its security at this point?

Baiba Braze, Latvian foreign minister: This summit for us is not so much about celebration. It's about work. [Regarding] deterrence and defense ... [these are] decisions that the allies, the leaders will confirm are in place. And we are very pleased. That also means that there is no direct military threat to the Baltics or other allies. And it is important to maintain that situation.

Having said that, if Russia is not beaten in Ukraine by Ukraine, the situation might change. So, we are very well aware that we do need a policy on Russia that is meant to contain and constrain Russia and to degrade its military capabilities. So that is what we will also be discussing [at the summit].

It's very clear that we all have to work around the globe to understand the challenges, understand how we can work together, and to come to those decisions to increase our own security, because at the end, NATO is a defense alliance.

VOA: Russia attacked several Ukrainian cities on the eve of the NATO summit, including Kyiv, where the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital was destroyed. How do you think this, and similar attacks, should affect NATO leaders’ decisions about Ukraine?

Braze: Well, the butcher in the Kremlin [Russian President Vladimir Putin] doesn't care. They don't care whether it's a children's hospital, a cancer hospital. We need to provide more air defenses [to Ukraine]. We also need to lift all the restrictions so Ukraine can actually hit legitimate military targets on Russia's territory. ... In that respect, Ukraine needs long-range fires, precision strike targeting, and so on and so forth. So that all needs to be provided to Ukraine to avoid attacks like this.

With regard to the butcher in the Kremlin, it's not the first time they have done it, and they will continue doing it. But they will be [held] accountable. There will be a moment that they will be responsible for all these crimes.

[Russia denied responsibility for Tuesday’s strike, insisting it doesn’t attack civilian targets in Ukraine despite abundant evidence to the contrary.]

The United Nations (UN) General Assembly passed a resolution on July 12 demanding that Russia "urgently withdraw" its forces and unauthorized personnel from the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) and "immediately return" the plant to full Ukrainian control, which the Russian Permanent Mission to the UN called a "politicized project" with only Western support.[10] Russian First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Dmitry Polyanskyi claimed that the resolution is an "ultimatum" and an effort to create the appearance that Ukraine has widespread support.[11] Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Spokesperson Maria Zakharova attempted to frame the UN General Assembly's majority support for the resolution as a failure for Ukraine.[12] Notably, only eight states--all Russian "allies" – Belarus, Burundi, Cuba, North Korea, Eritrea, Mali, Nicaragua, and Syria – voted against the resolution.[13] Kremlin officials will likely continue to frame legitimate Ukrainian negotiating positions as "ultimatums" in order to justify the Kremlin's disinterest in peace negotiations and its continued war against Ukraine.

The supply of missiles for the Ukrainian air defense batteries falls well short of the need.

Consider how busy Ukraine’s first Patriot battery was just in the first few weeks of operation last year. The German-donated battery arrived in Ukraine in May 2023, shot down its first Russian missile around May 11 and then, over the next six weeks, downed another 19 missiles—plus six attack drones, one surveillance drone, three helicopters and three fighter-bombers.

That’s five kills a week for one battery. Assuming some missiles miss—say, half—a single Ukrainian Patriot battery could fire 10 missiles a week without breaking a sweat. Ukraine is about to have eight more batteries in the same class as that initial German Patriot. They could conceivably fire 80 missiles a week — or nearly 500 a year — and only shoot down slightly more than a fifth of the incoming Russian missiles.

Guess how many Patriot missiles U.S. defense firm Lockheed Martin produces every year. That’s right: 500 as of December. Ukraine’s allies can send older missiles from their own stockpiles, but it’s the policy of many of them—the United States, in particular—to buy a new missile for every old missile it gives away.

Given the total absence of any slack in the supply of Patriot missiles, it should come as no surprise that the Biden administration has put in place a new policy: from now on, all newly built Patriot missiles go straight to Ukraine instead of any other customers.

“We’re going to re-prioritize the deliveries of these exports, so that those missiles rolling off the production line will now be provided to Ukraine,” White House national security communications adviser John Kirby told reporters late last month.

Between Patriot missiles and missiles for SAMP/Ts, the United States and its European allies can produce barely enough missiles to keep Ukraine’s air defense batters in action at the current firing rate.

But those batteries are already firing far too infrequently to shoot down all the incoming Russian missiles. To have a shot at hitting all the Russian munitions, the Ukrainians might need more than 2,000 long-range air defense missiles every year. Potentially four times as many as they’re currently getting.

Have you noticed that Russia's military suppliers are Iran and North Korea? In contrast, Ukraine has a broad swath of nations militarily supporting it:

Ukraine signed a series of security agreements and received several aid packages amid and following the July 9-11 NATO summit.

NATO member states issued a declaration on July 10 announcing a Pledge of Long-Term Security Assistance for Ukraine of at least 40 billion euros (about $43 billion) within the next year that will purchase military equipment for Ukraine; fund the maintenance, logistics, and transportation of military equipment; fund military training for Ukrainian forces; invest in Ukraine' defense industrial base (DIB); and supply non-lethal aid to Ukraine.[12]

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on July 11 that he signed a bilateral security agreement with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and Iohaniss announced that Romania will transfer a Patriot air defense system to Ukraine at an unspecified future date.[13]

Zelensky and Luxembourgish Prime Minister Luc Frieden signed a ten-year bilateral security agreement on July 10, and Zelensky and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk signed a security agreement requiring Poland to train Ukrainian volunteers and Ukrainian Legion units in Poland and provide Western equipment for the units.[14]

Zelensky stated on July 14 that Ukraine is also negotiating agreements with Czechia, Slovenia, and Ireland.[15]

The European Commission announced on July 13 that 21 countries and the European Union (EU) formed the Ukraine Compact that declares their support for Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.[16] The Compact pledges to support Ukraine's defensive needs, accelerate the development of Ukraine's forces, and allow them to respond swiftly to future Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Australia committed to contributing to the training of Ukrainian forces and allocated 250 million Australian dollars (about $170 million) worth of military aid to Ukraine on July 11 which includes air defense missiles, anti-tank weapons, and artillery ammunition.[17]

Its funny bc there are real life Nazis in Ukraine. And Zelensky is justfiably afraid of them.
The Azov Brigade - the one made up of real life Nazis - was split into two. The 3rd Brigade and IIRC the 22nd Brigade. And that 22nd(?) Brigade has been criticizing Zelensky, the whole Ukie military command, and the conscription. They've been making noises to the effect that the sons of the wealthy and influential... those who are still hitting the nightclubs in Kiev and Odessa - should be rounded up and sent to the front. They are projecting themselves as the defenders of real Ukraine, and as the only militarily successful group, saying that the rest of the army is corrupt and incompetent. They're behaving in general as if they're gathering a political following.
Some believe they have plans for a coup.

Comments by Mick Ryan, a retired Australian Army major general:

Many of Ukraine's allies "act like they are undertaking a large-scale goodwill gesture for a distant, eastern European nation."

"Trickle-feeding support to Ukraine, as has been the case for the last 28 months, is not stopping the war," and this was "not scaring Putin into stopping his aggression."

Despite many countries' generosity in helping Kyiv, "the level of diplomatic, military and financial support is barely meeting the rhetoric of 'defending Ukraine for as long as it takes,'" Ryan said, adding, "that strategy is failing."

Ukraine War Inspires Little Hope in Russia's Public

Russians Expect Nothing From Putin’s War
Political apathy is a psychological survival mechanism—and a possible route to peace.

By Kristaps Andrejsons, a journalist in Latvia and the creator of The Eastern Border podcast. | July 15, 2024

There has been plenty of discussion in Western media about why Russians are not protesting President Vladimir Putin’s regime and the war against Ukraine, whether it’s due to the economy, genuine enthusiasm for the war, or fear. One thing that most experts agree on is that Russia has a severe political apathy problem. That’s true—but it’s also far more pervasive than even Russianists often realize.

This problem is not new; it’s a continuation of Soviet-era cultural norms that have been carefully amplified and curated by Putin’s state propaganda. Russian experts themselves were once able to point out the problem—including Andrey I. Kolesnikov (a member of the “Kremlin pool” of journalists as the deputy CEO of the influential Kommersant newspaper and the editor in chief of Russky Pioner magazine) in an RIA news article from 2006, or academic Marina Podhomutinkova in a 2011 paper.

As statistics on the increasingly low number of people who get involved in politics show, the situation has only gotten worse over time. Apathy, tinged with fear, is the Russian norm. That explains some of the strangeness of public opinion data. Recent polls by the Moscow-based Levada Center show that support for war among the general population remains high, fluctuating around the 75 percent mark. At the same time, 71 percent of respondents would also approve of immediate peace talks. Although part of this can be attributed to the “preference falsification” that researchers find is common in authoritarian states, the apathy that Putin has cultivated goes far deeper than that.

On a personal level, if you ask the average Russian what they actually want from the war or expect to achieve if they win, then the answer is a resounding “nothing.” I’ve asked this question to many Russians—including relatives, friends, and business acquaintances. I’ve also spent a considerable amount of time on various anonymous Russian imageboards and Telegram channels, asking about people’s opinions in situations where anonymity is guaranteed. The result stays the same—the average Russian person just doesn’t care.

As one interviewee told me, “This is a stupid question. I’ve never thought about politics in my life—that’s the smart thing to do. Let politicians do their politics; that’s not for me. Sooner or later, this will be over. Putin will probably figure something out with China and [U.S. President Joe] Biden. I just hope that they don’t start throwing nukes around, but that’s all.”

Unsurprisingly, my interlocutors almost universally asked for anonymity.

Lev Gudkov, the director of the Levada Center, stated a similar conclusion in an interview with Radio Liberty in January this year: “This is indifference and being overwhelmed by life, poverty, and lack of rights, and pacifist beliefs, or simply well-being combined with the position ‘politics does not interest me.’”

As Gudkov noted, in some ways, this helps Putin: Active, ideological pro-war supporters, known as turbopatriots, have certain demands that Moscow has largely failed to fulfill. Look at the imprisoned ultranationalist Igor Girkin, who turned on Putin after the war against Ukraine went sour.

Maxim Katz, a Russian opposition politician-turned journalist-responded when I asked him this question during a livestream : “What an American, very Western question. It’s hard for the people in the West to understand that the average Russian wants nothing from this war, he does not see the victory in any way, he completely doesn’t care. For him, this is a question that his superiors are dealing with. The most important thing for him is to ensure that this war doesn’t affect him personally in any way.”

In part, this cynicism is bred by the gap between propaganda and reality. Russian state media takes nationalism to extremes, but ordinary Russians know that this is nonsense, often using the phrase “war between the TV and the refrigerator” to talk about the discrepancies between broadcast propaganda and the reality of empty shelves or failing appliances. The elites also know that the people know. As the old Soviet saying goes, “You pretend to pay us, we pretend to work.” That mentality is in full swing here.

This charade was a mainstay of the Soviet system. Elections were faked, with 99 percent of the population always voting for the only available party list. Trade unions nominally existed, but they were directly under the control of the Communist Party, never fulfilling any real functions, and any real expression of people’s political will was nearly nonexistent. But patriotism was compulsory, especially over national holidays. This led to an increase in apathy, nihilism, and disillusionment about the Soviet government.

When Mikhail Gorbachev took power, some nonpolitical interest clubs concerning social issues were finally permitted, such as the green movement. Russia had a brief spurt of real politics, freedom of speech, and open discussion—one that also coincided with economic chaos and a deep sense of disillusionment as Russia’s place in the world plummeted in the 1990s. The combination of all of these factors led to many people losing faith in democracy and liberal ideas, an increase of nostalgia toward the Soviet era, and a neglect of politics in general.

There’s a common Soviet era saying that remains popular among Russian speakers: “The folks up there see better.” What it means is that if you’re not one of the members of the political elite, then you should not be questioning their decisions, because they probably know better than you do—so don’t be curious, just do what you’re told. It’s related to another famous phrase—“I’m not an expert in this matter, but…”—that’s reached a meme status on the Russian speaking internet. Sometimes it’s joking, but often it’s used seriously. The idea that only an authorized few should get to have an opinion is embedded deep into the public mentality.

Another familiar trope that serves political apathy is the idea of “tough Russians.” Putin loves to play on that, portraying himself as a strongman who embodies the traditional Russian virtues of virility and masculinity. He makes macho but hollow boasts, such as his response from 2018 to a question about the potential of foreign nuclear threats against Russia: “We will go to heaven as martyrs, and they will just drop dead.”

But for ordinary people, there’s the commonly used term terpila (“the one who endures” or “endurer” in English). It refers to someone who just suffers through everything that life throws at them, without ever doing anything about it. It’s a negative term—but it describes many Russians.

These are the ideals that are being actively reinforced in Russia today as Putin doubles down on Soviet nostalgia. People are shown that they have a strong, powerful leader, who will bring greatness to the country. That is a promise of stability and prosperity, but because of Russia’s Soviet past, it is also a reminder that you shouldn’t bother with politics or civic engagement, and that only a narrow group of specialists are ever allowed to have an opinion in any given matter. If there are any problems, you should endure them as a so-called real Russian and not have any ideas of change.

What does this mean for the war? Well, it’s been decided by the higher-ups, so it’s not any of your business.

Roughly 20 million Ukrainians have relatives in Russia. One-third of Ukraine’s population stated in a 2011 survey that they have friends there as well. So, when Russians answer polling questions about their support for the war, they say “yes”—because that’s a political issue, and they have enough problems to deal with. At the same time, when they get asked about whether they would support immediate peace talks, they respond “yes” again, because the killing of Ukrainians just seems odd to the vast majority of people—even if they’ve bought into Putin’s propaganda about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government supposedly being full of Satanists and neo-Nazis.

As one of my own distant relatives told me on the phone, “What do you mean, want from the war? How can you even want something from a war? I want the war to end, and I think that every reasonable person has the same opinion!” Her husband added, “We’re just not that political, as a people, you know. Nobody thought this was possible, but now … now we just want this to end, to return to how things were.”

The bloodiness of this war seems to play little role in the average Russian person’s political activity. Casualties in this conflict are very high—current estimates of those killed or wounded in the conflict put the figure at more than 500,000 people, much higher than the casualties suffered during the Soviet war in Afghanistan, where approximately 15,000 USSR soldiers were lost, with approximately 35,000 more wounded. The difference lies in who is getting mobilized.

During the Afghanistan war, the Soviet Union sent regular conscripts to fight, as per the mandatory service and zinc coffins were seen in cities all over the USSR. In the Ukrainian war, Putin is careful to preserve the illusion of normalcy for the citizens of Moscow and St. Petersburg—it’s the ethnic minorities and convicts that do most of the fighting, as to not provoke the Russian people into caring too much. Especially since he has another political issue with this war that he needs to be careful about.

Putin has described Ukrainians as belonging to the Russian civilization—misled by the West, yes, but brothers nonetheless. My impression from talking to Russians is that at this point, they’ll support whatever Putin declares needs supporting, whatever scheme he has going on, as long as this confusing nightmare ends faster. Then everyone, ideally, could go back to business as usual, pretending that this war never even happened.

There is a silver lining to this though. Putin is 71 and has been in power for nearly 25 years. Anyone who could have given him an honest opinion, much less some constructive criticism, has long been forced into retirement, pushed into exile, imprisoned, or outright killed. He’s visibly lost touch with reality—according to a recently defected Kremlin insider, Putin does not use a smartphone, nor does he know how to use a computer beyond the very basics of functions. He does not use the internet. A video where he, supposedly, is shown logging in to vote via Russia’s online voting platform in the farcical so-called presidential election in March was laughable, as it’s obvious that Putin has no idea what he’s doing.

But the cynicism and apathy of the older generation may not extend to the younger one. The Kremlin has no clue about what to do with the younger generation, who mainly watch YouTube and listen to podcasts. Among this category of Russians aged 25 to 39, the Levada Center’s April polls showed only 23 percent support for the war. Russia’s best attempt at propaganda on YouTube was its failed RuTube project, where various popular Russian content creators were paid large amounts of money—more than they were making via their channels on YouTube—to move all of their content to RuTube and occasionally include pro-Kremlin content among whatever they were posting normally.

As a result, most of the pro-Putin YouTube channels have lost their audience, and the Russian government is wasting money paying for content that nobody watches. It’s also about to launch a state-approved version of Wikipedia, which will steal articles from the original Russian-language wiki and then automatically censor them. The project is equally likely to crash and burn.

Russians won’t be overthrowing their regime anytime soon. But if the war becomes a more personal problem, attitudes could shift fast. This is important, because people reevaluate their risks on a daily basis—when the regime is strong, they would rather lay low and stay on the safer side. But as soon as cracks start to appear, the very same people can suddenly turn fiercely.

Western policymakers should take this into account. Russian people are absolutely fine with the war ending—as long as there’s a plan for them, and not a repeat of the humiliations of the 1990s.

A recent Ukrainian poll indicates that Ukrainians widely reject Russia's demands for total Ukrainian capitulation, emphasizing that the Kremlin's conditions for the end of the war are entirely unreasonable and widely unpopular within Ukraine. Ukrainian outlet Dzerkalo Tyzhnya commissioned a poll by the Ukrainian Razumkov Center and published its results on July 15.[1] The poll found that 83 percent of respondents rejected Putin's statement that Ukraine must withdraw from all of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia oblasts — including territory in these oblasts currently under Ukrainian control.[2] The poll also reported that 58 percent of respondents stated that Ukraine should not agree to enshrine a neutral, non-aligned, and non-nuclear status in its constitution. Putin demanded in June 2024 that Ukraine recognize Russia’s territorial claims over eastern and southern Ukraine (including territory that Russia does not currently occupy), "demilitarize," and pledge not to join NATO as preconditions to begin "peace" negotiations.[3] Putin’s extreme terms are tantamount to Ukraine's capitulation, indicating that Putin continues to be uninterested in good-faith negotiations on any terms other than Russia's. Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov recently accused NATO on July 14 of not respecting “Russia’s main concern” when NATO announced Ukraine’s prospects of admission into the alliance, claiming that the alliance’s behavior suggests that there is no basis for negotiations about the war in Ukraine.[4] Putin's framing of Ukraine's total capitulation as a reasonable precondition for peace negotiations is also part of an attempt to undermine Ukraine's efforts to garner international support for Ukraine's own legitimate negotiating positions, which are based on and backed by international law, by shifting international perceptions of logical negotiating terms in Russia's favor. Continued Russian efforts to claim that Ukraine is refusing "reasonable" demands intend to cast Ukraine as the unreasonable actor, despite the fact that Ukraine's rightful borders have been recognized by international law since 1991.

OPINION: Jumping the Line: Why to Win, Ukraine Must Take the Fight Into Russia

By George Woloshyn | July 16, 2024, 11:02 am

https://www.kyivpost.com/opinion/35854

Almost 30 months into the full-scale war, and despite the daily destruction and carnage from the sky, Ukraine is still fending off the world’s third-largest air power with little more than a handful of aging Soviet aircraft, largely depleted Soviet anti-air batteries (ABMs) and an entirely insufficient array of donated air defense equipment. Added to the insufficient and untimely support Ukraine was provided in holding back the second-largest land power in the world, it is a wonder that Ukraine still stands. Even Ukraine’s flat, sparsely forested terrain fails to offer the protection of Afghan mountains, Finnish marshlands, or Vietnamese rainforests.

But now that several of Ukraine’s European allies have taken the lead in offering F-16 fighter jets, and more air defense systems have been promised at the NATO summit, Putin is worried that Ukrainians may recover more control over their skies. Russians are now searching and targeting Ukrainian air bases more frequently to forestall the arrival of the new aircraft. . .

WTF do Ukrainian hopes have to do with ALLIANCE?

Let's look at the other part of that sentence ....

Quote:

"Many of Ukraine's allies "act like they are undertaking a large-scale goodwill gesture for a distant, eastern European nation."

That implies that the voluntary, 'goodwill gesture' nature of western aid is somehow inappropriate for an "ally'.

But there is NO FORMAL ALLIANCE between Ukraine and western nations. Ukraine is NOT part of NATO or any other formal alliance, despite western globalists attempt to gaslight everyone into unconsciously assuming that there is.

Ukraine is a PROXY, and that relationship is disadvantageous to them, because they are designed to bear the brunt of our war on Russia, while our involvement is VOLUNTARY, and comes with PLAUSIBLE DENIABILITY for our more extreme actions such as biowarfare labs, terrorism and war crimes.

I feel sorry for Ukrainians that they got hoodwinked into being our proxy. They voted for Zelensky bc he's a Russian speaker who ran on a platform of peace.

And I'm sure our arrangement with Kiev benefits some people in Ukraine greatly while everyone else suffers and dies, but that is the nature of being our proxy, and the nature of Ukraine not being a democracy. Bc people's original hopes for peace, or their current hopes for maintaining original borders, are for shit.

It's like Kissinger said ....

Why SECOND'S posts are brainless: "I clocked how much time: no more than 10 minutes per day. With cut-and-paste (Ctrl C and Ctrl V) and AI, none of this takes much time."
Or, any verification or thought.

Satellite imagery collected on May 6 indicates that Russian forces have concentrated at least seven Pantsir-1 medium-range air defense systems around Putin's residence in Valdai, Leningrad Oblast.[1]

Ruslan Pukhov, the head of the Moscow-based Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies and a member of a Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) civilian advisory board, stated on July 16 that such "focal" air defense coverage (static coverage of a singular target) is meaningless at scale because it allows Ukrainian drones to bypass Russian air defense coverage and strike from uncovered directions.[2]

The Russian military apparently lacks the required conventional air defense systems to protect all critical facilities within western Russia and has even struggled to cover important potential targets in reportedly well-defended areas within Russia.[3]

Pukhov called on the Russian military to introduce an innovative decentralized approach to protect facilities in Russia from Ukrainian drones and warned that Ukrainian drones will likely reach deeper within Russia.[4] The Russian military began forming mobile fire groups — decentralized groups that Ukraine successfully deployed to defend against Russian Shahed-136/131 drone strikes — in March 2024 but have yet to field these groups at the required scale to sufficiently protect critical facilities in western Russia.[5]

Continued pressures on Russia's air defense umbrella have led select regional authorities to explicitly state that Russian companies and local authorities cannot rely on federal-level Russian air defenses and need to provide for their own anti-drone capabilities.[6]
