Okay, so we're all agreed that modern widespread religions have been co-opted for use as tools for control of the masses, and the seeds of many of these religions religions usually started with one or a few peeps that wanted to do good, that takes a 'deity' off the list of potential origins of life and humanity.
And evolution has been pretty much disproved, as you're about as likely to find a 'missing link' as an Iraqui 'WMD', so forget that.

The only answer is ...Ancient Astronauts!
They found this planet, and some wanted to stay behind. They destroyed all evidence and memory of the event to start clean. The only thing left is the emergency escape vessle in the center of the Moon. When we discover that, we can make the journey home, if we wish (sloppy to make the Moon without getting it to carbon date the same age as Earth, ah well, no one's perfect...)

Of course... why didn't I see it before. *feels foolish for missing the obvious*.

The only problem is... we'll never have the chance to prove it because, you, I and most of the browncoats on this site will be amongst the heathens that shall burn on Tuesday.

Oh, wait. If there is no deity then there shall be no sacrificial burning to mark the destruction of the world on 6/6/06. That kind of puts a damper on things...

I was looking forward to that.

That which you call the destruction of the world will be a change in the world; the Moon's secret will be revealed.

You'll get your chance to sacrifice.
We'll start with world leaders, they are the robots that evolved from the nanite technology supposedly destroyed to conceal our past; one nanite was overlooked, and in his lonliness, he decided to replicate and control mankind as a punishment.

According to Christopher Knight's book "Who built the Moon" it was time travelers.
Aparently they created the moon as a kind of fool-proof catalyst to insure the right conditions existed for life to evolve.
Maybe, like "Deep thought" the program it's running is nearing it's end and Teusday is the day that it finaly switches off.
On the other hand, if it was time travelers, how did they evolve in the first place to a point where they realised that they had to go back in time to create the moon so that they could evolve in the first place?
Ooooh, I feel a headache coming on.

Didn't they end up re-proving (for want of a better word) Evolution again. The idea of Inteligent Design (the supposed evidence of a higher being) having been found flawed. With the initial researchers failing to forward significant details contradicting their very experiments...?

Or was I just dozing on the sofa when that came on ?

Just out of curiosity - why do you (collective you) want to know about the origins? I mean I have my own thoughts but I'm sort of interested as to what people hope/think/believe/fear it may all be about?

Maybe if we knew where we came from we would have a better idea of where we are going to end up.

How do you think we would function if we knew where we were going? If the answer we had wasn't nearly as grand as we'd hoped?

What if our purpose is insignificant? Do you think we'd be able to comprehend an insignificant exsistance?

Maybe not, but perhaps we could accept it and not be so wound up by the "infinate possibilities".
Then we could enjoy the journey.

Because if we as a planet could concieve of something real and tangible outside of this small world, maybe we could behave more like brothers and sisters, and less like tribes warring over whose 'God' rules.

And the nano-evolved robots don't want that.

Yeah but if you look at the religions of the world, most of which are exactly the same when you get to the core, most seem to say, don't be an ass and be nice to others.

I mean when Jesus said that a Samaritan could be a good person you have to remember that Samaritans worshiped in a very different way and were not on good footing with the Jews.

He's saying, "Your enemies can be good people," and he's not alone in it. Though I will yield that Judaism is violent and warlike when that violence is in the name of religion it only seems to be against heretics, not heathens.

Most of the time anyone killing in the name of god is disobeying whichever god they are killing in the name of so it can't be the belief in god that is the problem. The problem has to be something else. I think the problem is people.

I mean let's say you believe in god, what does god do, he she or it goes around saying to people, "Hi, how are you? Listen. Be good, here's the version of the golden rule best suited for your people, here's a parable or two, be nice." And someone says that stuff to the people, and then a generation or two later they’re killing each other over the spelling.

Let's say you don't believe in god, then someone hallucinates god saying the exact same thing.

-

I have a feeling that something real and tangible would have the same effect as the words, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it. Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." Which is to say nothing. Nothing at all.

No change, just different reasons for killing each other.

-

To change the world you need to change people, to change people you need them to want to change, god is as good a way to get them to do that as any.

Okay. Let's take a poll.
What reasons did you have last time you killed someone?

I don't kill people, but if history is any indication I'd say social cleansing is the reason most often chosen. New records have caused us to reevaluate the number of gypsies killed in the holocaust (much more than we thought), no one talks about them though, no one likes them.

Trade unionists and such don't get much talk either.

But they do die quite often.

All in all I'd say the desire for land, power, and desire for a utopian society free of all "lesser" people and trouble makers are reasons for killing more often than religion.

They genetically interfered in our indigenous DNA to create a slave-race to work their mines, farms, and other enterprises in Sumer. They created HuMans, Homo Sapiens, through genetic manipulation with themselves and ape man Homo Erectus.
