Don't see how that proves liberal bias...

I guess I'm confused. I admit it's been a good long while since I've watched FOX News, but since when are they liberal? It's always seemed to me that all the news channels are conservative, but FOX News was the only one who didn't bother hiding it. The others at least tried to appear neutral.

Libby's lurid book in demand

news.com.au
8 November 2005

A STEAMY novel by I Lewis "Scooter" Libby has become a hot item now that Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff is under indictment.

An inscribed copy of The Apprentice: A Novel, which Libby wrote in 1996 when he was a relative unknown outside Washington, was on sale on online bookseller Amazon.com today for $US2400 ($A3280). Unsigned hardcover copies were going for $US700 ($A956).

Now out of print, the novel tells the story of an innkeeper apprentice in a bizarre coming-of-age story set in Japan in 1903. It is littered with edgy sexual material and strong language.

"Wow, who would have thought that clean living, family values man Scooter Libby was capable of writing such filth," said one reviewer on Amazon.

Another Amazon reviewer noted its "lavish dollops of voyeurism, bestiality, pedophilia and corpse robbery."

Libby was charged last month with perjury in a special prosecutor's probe into how a CIA operative's identity was leaked to journalists.

Libby's writing skills also happened to be displayed in a widely published letter to reporter Judith Miller of The New York Times that showed a flair for literary allusion and ambiguity.

"Out West, where you vacation, the aspens will already be turning. They turn in clusters, because their roots connect them," he wrote to Miller as she sat in jail earlier this year for refusing to reveal Libby's identity as a source.

When does Richard Armitage go on trial again ? After all, it was he, and not Libby, who ' outted' CIA employee Val Plame.

This round goes to the CIA. After vowing not to take the heat for screwing up the intel on Iraq, they've been able to set up the Bush administration by framing a lower level staffer.

I feel safer already.

If you're really serious re: learning more about the investigation and why Libby was tried and found guilty then I suggest you do a number of things: turn off Fox News, go buy a copy of Marcy Wheeler's book* and read through the archive posts over at firedoglake.com**. That's just for starters.

I've watched less FOX NEWS than I have 'Survivor' or ' American Idol'.( If it's possible to watch negative of anything, that that's what I've done. ) Granted, I didn't cover the trial other than hearing the highlights, but what was there to cover ? Everyone acknowledges that it was Armitage, and not Libby, who 'leaked' Val Plames's name out. And there's no indication at all she was a 'covert' agent. Not recently, at least. So it's no shocker that Libby wasn't charged with anything remotely having to do w/ 'outting' a CIA agent.

What was this trial about again?

Obstruction of justice. Libby impeded an investigation by lying to investigators. He perjured himself before a grand jury in an effort to stall the investigation.

What the evidence shows is that Scooter Libby asked numerous administration/intelligence officials for information about Plame (all of this before Wilson even wrote his op-ed). In other words, he was the person who was tasked with building up the attack on Wilson. Cheney was livid that the claims about WMDs were being challenged and set Libby up with the task of destroying Wilson's credibility. Libby lied to the investigators to cover-up the role that he and Cheney played in Plame's outing.

* eta: A simplified version is this: if Cheney and Libby do nothing then Armitage doesn't have the information to leak to Novak in the first place.

* eta: Another thing to keep in mind, Libby was one of the leakers as well. He leaked the information to Judith Miller. Right after he spent some time with the White House counsel asking some very specific questions that made it look like he was concerned about what he was about to do.

I'm no big fan of the CIA, but it's not their idea to screw up everything. That gets done at a higher level. Doody runs downhill. The CIA is like every other agency; they'll tell you what you want to hear if you put enough pressure on them (but NO torture; the CIA does not respond well to that).

*suddenly realizes*
In RL, Mal would be a CIA operative, and the Operative would be the head of an Arab terrorist cell, and Miranda would be the hiding place for all the millions of tons of unfound (but totally REAL) WMD's. Firefly is, after all, a story set in space, but reflecting the conflict here and now between the wusses who don't understand that destruction is the only way to secure our future, and the real HEROES that are willing to sacrifice this nation's kids for an idea: that God wants us to prevail in this war against our way of life. He wants us to smite our enemy, the democracy-less, resentfull-for-no-good-reason towel-heads! We open the world up for them, and they hate us for it.
Jayne would surely say to nuke them.

Chris , No.

I read this and I heard two new voices inside my head.

One was a little fat guy with a high voice saying,
" No, Mr. Frodo, don't wear the ring any more."

And the other was an old guy in a robe with a hodd, saying, " Don't give in to the Dark Side, Luke."

So, I more or less nailed it?

I see in the Firefly characters what I want to see, and I sometimes forget that Mal might just see me as a goody-two-shoes and order me to shut up or get off his boat if I want to keep asking him if robbing a bank might get someone innocent shot (guess that more or less makes me Simon...).
I suppose you see him as a man who does what he needs to to get the job done, like GW.
Still, I suspect Mal would see Bush as Alliance, not much different than the Operative, while Jayne would view him as a pussy ("Gee, we sure could use some grenades right about now, don't ya think?") who worries too much about what the whiny public wants.

Just a thought Chrisisall
