Let me start by saying that I am in no way racist.

Recently I have become more and more disturbed by reports regarding Chinese exports.

Its been talked about for a while now that food grown in China and exported has large amounts of harmful bacteria and other nastiness(chemicals and such). Now the latest is that just about all the clothes exported from China are soaked in formalahyde (upto around 20,000ppm)a known harmful chemical that can cause all kinds of health issues. K-Mart, Target and most other department stores are all stocked by what seems mostly to be clothing made in China.

I am beginning to wonder if the soaring rates of cancers and other health complaints in the western world are in some part due to these Chinese produce/product. I seriously believe this could be an organised, systematic, machiavellian play for world domination from China by slowly killing off the west with their tainted food and clothes exports.

At the very least it must be considered criminal negligence.

I'll take criminal negligence for $300, chuck...

At least when China catches em at it, paybacks a bitch, over here, at most we'd slap em on the wrist and fine em 0.1% of the profit they made on it, grr

I don't think it's so much a plan, as one of the perils of a global "free market" of the type espoused by wingnuts of both ends - buyer beware, especially of businesses that are out of your effective reach or retaliation.

Worst of it is that we can't even push the Chinese too hard, cause who do you think we borrowed all that money from to run this pair of idiotic wars ? ... so of course they're gonna exploit the hell out of that against us from a trade perspective.

So rather than any kind of "plan", what you are seeing are the end results of the type of hands-off "deregulation" that so-called conservatives are always pushing.. no inspections, toxic products, etc etc.

I may not like most of our Govt agencies, but I do recognize the value of product safety.

When I was there it was pre Tiniamin Square days. They loved Richard Nixon, and the Chinese people as a rule were gracious and hospitable. Now except for gracious hospitality...everything is different now cuz they're growing too fast for us. The people I knew weren't consistantly educated in the higher sense, but they knew better than to sell us poisoned cancer causing stuff cuz that's kind of mean spirited and it's bad for business. You know....I survived in China, traveled EVERYWHERE in China, and lived like a King with servants on about $900 that year (1986), and I'm still alive. Alright....what was my point?.......Oh!

The Chinese aim to beat us at our own game, certainly noy destroy us. I would call them 1/2 enemy 1/2 freind. A lot more trustworthy than Putin Russians. Thats just my humble opinon

Hmm, well I for one havent bought foodstuffs made in China for quite a while now. I intend never to buy clothes made in China again, though that is a bit harder because I dont know of many alternatives.. here in Australia everything seems to be made in China.

I would normally be really critical of Chinese exports, when you buy from the lowest bidder what do you get... right ?

But lately in the news their seems to be even more warning about American product, especially produce

You're spot on Gino, seems foolish to buy from the lowest bidder regardless of the consequences.

China though.. seems to be reckless to say the least with just about everything they sell.

Unfortunately there are just as many nasty things in the food, water and products made in the west. Take Aspartame for example.
This is'nt a Chinese thing it's a Capitalist thing; make money and who cares who gets sick because of it.

Just to clarify, the deregulation free market proponents call for is for no GOVT inspections and regulation. It is not a call for no inspections period. Free marketeers have no problems with voluntary private inspections and reviews such as Consumer Reports.

We do have laws and inspections now, and recent recalls from pet food to leaded painted toys show that these regulations are largely ineffective in preventing toxins from reaching the consumer. Since government oversight doesn't work that well anyway, why not get rid of it (and the inflation that it causes) and have consumers learn to rely on non-governmental private inspections instead? It's possible that this mechanism may not work better, but it won't be worse in the grand scheme of things. When consumers get the information (regardless of govt or non-govt source), they will avoid unsafe products. Manufacturers of unsafe products have to change (as China is now attempting to do) or go out of business.

Regarding this thread, China is simply behind the west in safety issues. Remember when we used leaded gasoline? Remember when we used DDT? Remember we STILL use formaldehyde and antifreeze in the vaccines we inject into our babies? Before blaming China for all our cancers and ills, remember that WE invented all these toxins to begin with and used them widely before we banned them.

Not sure I trust the corpo bastards to inspect themselves, CTS - private might be the way to go, but I see that as an endless round of bribes for waivers and the like held up by corpo slush funds, human nature and corp structure being what it is.. such agencies would have to answer to customers rather than corps, and if you have an idea on how to realistically do that, by all means, we could go with that.

And most of the de-reg people I hear talkin about it are going with no inspections, period, caveat emptor, as it were... but I would only buy from a local supplier under those rules, cause I know where to find his ass if something bad comes of it.

Trouble is Calhoun just which report is it you are being informed by? And to what extent do you trust second hand information? How do you know the reports you read alerting to China's 'negligence' aren't just scare mongering from coporations with invested interest in the competing market?

We're completely fucked man.

Dems and Rethugs been selling us to China for a long time now. Hope you stashed some of those guns away, because they won't be shy using them on us when they come over here in droves in the airports and seaports they've bought with all of the money we've paid them for shit at the dollar store, most of it likely sitting in a landfill already.

They freaking kick high too man. My fat ass can't do that playing Playstation and eating Cheetos all day.

Did I mention that there's Billions of them too?
