Tragically a a police car ran into two teenagers

Now it seems a hardcore bunch of rioting, looting North African and Middle East immigrants are burning and fighting on the streets of Paris.

Be honest, if you had to live in France, wouldn't you riot?

More insane ramblings by the people who brought you beeeer milkshakes!
No one can see their reflection in running water. It is only in still water that we can see.

I thought there've been riots in France ever since Sarkozy took office. It was unions, then students, now apparently Muslims. Meh. Why should they be any different ?

In Australia. We had a couple of kids (anglo) chased by police and the kids crashed their car and there were deaths that resulted in Riots.

It happens.

But I may be mistaken but France always seems a little volatile to me.

Mind you if i had their health system i wouldn't mind the occassional riot.

Part I. Yes. Pictured are Count De Monet and King Louis XVI.

The French are always fighting themselves because they can't fight anyone else, as soon as another nation came into the picture they'd be reaching for their government-issue white flags, surrendering faster than you can say 'valour'.

Oh...you wanted INTELLIGENT discussions. You shoulda spoken up before. I think there's a special posting place for that somewhere. Follow the post trail of Signy & your other posting groupies to find it. The rest of us low-life retards will be content to just wallow in our ignorance here and there.

When I saw someone had posted I eagerly clicked - to find regurgitated bias. Absent intelligent discussion I probably would have settled for funny or witty, but the post didn't seem to have anything I value.

I'm curious. How do you react to that kind of post ?
AHA ! Someone who thinks like me ! or...
Yeah yeah ... blah blah blah ... or ...
BORing or ...
Now that's a gem of common sense, or ...

And if one poster can express an anti-French opinion, why can't another poster express disappointment in a post ? It's all opinion - right ?

Just funnin' with you Rue.
Please go ahead and post as many French-positive posts as you like. I will read them all with an open mind. I have a serious side and a light-hearted side. I read these threads because something in the title intrigues me, or I read 'em 'cause so many others have already responded & I want to join in. We almost never agree on anything, yet I'm sure we could sit together and talk Firefly stuff for days...that's the beauty of this board over all others. Thank You.

Actually there have been riots in France since the fall of Lou'ie and founding of the First Republic.

Recently there were the pre-Sarkozy riots that helped win him power when folk suddenly realized...'hey our country is about to fall apart'.

Then Sarkozy comes to power and says 'US not so bad'- riots. 'You have to work for a living'- riots. 'We're standing up to Iran'- riots. 'I'm divorcing my wife'- riots. And so on. To be fair, the US isn't so bad, you do have to work for a living, Iran is bad news, and his wife was a whore...so its all good.

I'm just surprised that France is showing any kind of backbone...even it its just standing up to each other.

Me, I prefer California wine and Wisconsin cheese so as far as I'm concerned France can do what its likes...we've got a spare anyhow(Quebec...start warming up cause I'm sending you in.)

It's been like this in France since the late 1960's -- the government suggests something a significant part of the populous dislikes, they riot, government backs down. It has blocked significant reform in both France and the EU.

Now weither or not you view that as a bad thing depends on how you view the reforms and to a degree on how you expect democracy to work. If for example 90% of the population were to elect a government with a specific platform would it be ok for the remaining 10% to riot to block that policy? Is there an inherent expectation that if you use the popular vote you are required to accept the policies you rejected? Or is "democracy from the street" a purer form of expression?

"Sigh. And I was so hoping for intelligent discussion."

Then what are you doing HERE ?!

Hehehe, just couldn't resist that one.

As for French-positive, I'll note that once the French realized they were utterly no good at war, they wisely hired outsiders to do it for them on a limited scale where it would be of benefit to them directly.

They called em the Foreign Legion, and being that they'd take anyone, also became a use for outcasts and criminals that would have otherwise had a negative social impact on their country.

And the Legion, up till they started purporting themselves as an elite force and accepting only folks with higher qualifications - was probably the most whoopass force in the world, mainly cause nobody fights like a guy with nothin left to lose.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Camar%C3%B3n
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Foreign_Legion

Some of their traditions are kinda wiggy tho, Legion sappers are expected to grow a large, fluffy beard, and ridiculed if they don't.
(There's been female sappers, one can imagine that bit of ribbing goin on, lol..)

And on Legionarres Day, they take down the disembodied prosthetic wooden hand of of Capt Danjou and parade it through the streets drinking toasts to it...

It's good stuff and well worth a read, if you've got the time.

It cannot be said enough, those who do not learn from history, are doomed to endlessly repeat it

So....

When a French Muslim is about to play chicken in his commercial jet with a sky scraper, does he pull out the white flag first?
