I know I can't be the only Harry Potter fan on here.

I just read HP7. Yeah, I know it took me a long time, but in all fairness, I only started 2 days ago.

Spoiler alert! Spoilers below!

I am so relieved that Severus Snape turns out to be one of the best of them all. I can hardly wait to see what Alan Rickman does with him. The whole Snape story has made book #6 and #7 my favorites of the bunch. There is courage for ya.

What do you all think?

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

I haven't read any of the HP books. But thanks to the insistance of little ones I have seen all the movies. Snape always struck me as being VERY well acted. Exactly on the line between good guy ? or bad guy ? I was so hoping it would be good guy b/c I have a fond spot for Rickman since 'Galaxy Quest'.

I never read any of the books, but I’ve seen all the movies, I think. Snape is my favorite character, because he’s real. I never really though of him as a bad guy, even in the first one. He’s the kind of hard-edged serious guy that kids would always be offended or frightened by, but he’s really the kind of guy that you want at your side in a jam.

Snape's a jerk, but he's a SMART jerk...

All throughout the series, the things that he's all up in Harry's case about, they *matter* - while everyone else is keeping him in the dark or worshipping the ground he walks on, Snape is layin into him, often quite rightfully, for his lack of discipline, inattentiveness, slackerhood and just plain not taking his own defense seriously enough, which repeatedly bites Harry on the ass, cause he's not really mature enough emotionally to look past Snape's petty snark and "get" what he is trying to get across.

Snape's a born teacher, his method may suck, but in every single rant, insult or diatribe, if you pick through it, there's solid advice, personal dislike notwithstanding.

All that said, Alan Rickman is just fantastic with the character, his "and if you did, you'd have my utmost sympathy..." delivery to Umbridge just left me on the floor.

The devil of the details is that Snape really did care, and he hated himself for it, but he did, and went out of his way on more than one occasion to cover for the kid, some of it not immediately apparent without re-reading the books and thinking it over a bit.

The only part of it that struck me raw in the final book was *all* the Slytherins getting up and siding with ole Moldy-Voldy... being that I am of the same mind they are, that would NOT have happened.

"What, help him take over so I can be his bitch forevermore ? nope, I don't think so!"

That thought woulda been way more prevalent, realistically, even if they were gonna get their butts kicked, the odds of buyin your way to glory were better than being kicked around by him as a second rate flunky - as far as personal advancement goes, which is what House Slytherin was primarily about.*

Ain't no personal glory in bein the Dark Lords waterboy, yanno.

*Truthfully, I think that was also part of what was driving Snape, he'd far rather be Dumble-Dimwits left-hand man than one of Voldys peons.

I agree that Alan Rickman is fantastic as Snape...

In fact all these actors are wonderful....

The movies leave out so much, you can't really appreciate how good the whole HP series is until you read the books...

In book 7 we finally find out why Snape is the way he is and why he is so loyal to Dumbledore

HP have been a world event, 7 novels, the 6th motion picture currently being made with great actors and then the final movie.

Yes! Snape's character was written with more finesse and maturity, I think, than most of the others. In the other characters, Dumbledore and Potter included, the weaknesses seem almost perfunctory to avoid complete caricaturization. With Snape, since his character is part of the grand mystery, he is allowed to have gray, ambivalent layers. He loved and hated himself for loving--and yet loved with more loyalty and courage than any of the others, because he had to love alone and friendless, unrequited and despised. His character is the ultimate romantic tragedy. I love that Rowling ended the series with this revelation, that Snape was, in the end, perhaps more heroic than either Potter or Dumbledore.

Yeah, more of the caricaturization. It never made sense to me that one house of Hogwarts would be all evil.

You hit the nail on the head. He didn't care for popularity, only results. Not particularly likeable, but thoroughly reliable. A good friend indeed.

And you and Rue!!! Read the books! Like most book/movie titles, the books are so much richer than the movies.

(The exception would have to be Forrest Gump, where the movie was so much richer than the book.)

Rickman can do no wrong in my book. I've had a fond spot for Rickman since Hans Gruber said, "I am an exceptional thief, Mrs. McClane. I never really got into the books. In fact, only the first Harry Potter movie, with its feel good British feel to it, made any impact on me. Most the other movies were too childish to be of much interest to me and too violent to be suitable for most children. After about the second I guess, they really went in a totally wrong direction.

Also I too am a fan of Alan Rickman. I remember him as the charming criminal mastermind from Diehard, but where he first made an impact on me was in Dogma. He made that movie.
