I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Is looking more and more like reality, not some futuristic science fiction dystopia.

WHEN are we going to wake up as a species and realize that the earth is not an endless resource?

Quote:

SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- The stunning collapse of one of the West Coast's biggest wild salmon runs has prompted even cash-strapped fishermen to call for an unprecedented shutdown of salmon fishing off the coasts of California and Oregon.

"There's likely no fish, so what are you going to be fishing for?" asked Duncan MacLean, a fisherman from Half Moon Bay. "I have no problem sitting out to rebuild this resource if that's what's necessary." The Pacific Fishery Management Council meets in Seattle this week and will likely vote to impose the most severe restrictions ever on West Coast salmon fishing to protect California's dwindling chinook stocks.

The Sacramento River chinook run is usually one of the most productive on the Pacific Coast, providing the bulk of the salmon caught by sport and commercial trollers off California and Oregon.

But only about 90,000 adult chinook returned to the Central Valley last fall -- the second lowest number on record and well below the number needed to maintain a healthy fishery. That number is projected to fall to a record low of 58,000 this year. By contrast, 775,000 adults were counted in the Sacramento River and its tributaries as recently as 2002.

"This stock got off-the-charts bad very suddenly," said Donald McIsaac, the council's executive director. "It's a very, very severe situation."

When are we as a species going to stop eating Fish? (Or beef or chicken or pork or vegetables or grains)
When are we as a species going to limit child births worldwide?
We are using up more of the Earth because there are more of us. So unless you have a plan to somehow cull the Earth's population to more sustainable levels, how do you suggest we stop using up the Earth?

And I don't even like Salmon. Nor do I have a cat, so I'm not feeding anything salmon either. So, don't blame me!

How hot will it have get until I turn into a Reaver? When Ted Turner said we're all destined to turn into cannibals from Global Warming, he didn't specify if sexual activity would still be posssible. So I'll choose the Reaver scenario, 'cause at least I'll "get some" before I get et.

Actually, the one most affected by this in my household is the Alpha Femme, Kallista.

Tuna she can take or leave, but her personal favorite is pink salmon, lightly steamed in mineral water - but that's a pretty rare treat for her, reserved for special occasions, the last of which was scaring off some folk poking about near the garage with a bloodcurdling howl through the window that sent em lookin for a change of underwear, meh heh heh.

Catfish is great!

Take a catfish fillet, put it on foil, dribble on some olive oil, salt, maybe some allspice or BBQ rub (just a little) then on the grill for 6 minutes. Serve with coleslaw. Great healthy meal for about $3.

The rest of this thread is crap...the world is not dying, although I can't say the same for the wild salmon (I prefer farm raised anyway).

This is just another REPENT THE END IS NEAR thread. Sorry, the end is not near cause baby its cold outside.

The Earth is sick stuff is getting old, especially since being afraid of the thunder or appeasing the wind gods went out with the Dark Ages.

Yeah, and next you'll be telling me that okra is delicious too! Neither fried or fresh will I ever suffer okra on my plate. Nevah!

I find this news somewhat troubling, but I know from reading about the management of US fisheries over the years that they can come back fast if they are not allowed to be too heavily depleted. It's always pressure from fisherman that keeps the authorities from acting quick enough, and ironically they're the ones who suffer most when the tipping point is reached. In some cases like the King Crab it took decades for the population to rebuild. With the Grouper here in Florida the doomsayers predicted it would take decades, but it only took a few years.

Definitely disagree on the wild vs. farm raised Salmon thing. Wild caught Salmon has much better flavor and texture than farm raised(and a lot less Mercury)in my opinion. Definitely agree on the Catfish though. Not all Catfish are exclusively bottom feeders, the best Catfish are the carnivore varieties like Flatheads, Blues, and Channel Cat.

It's kinda the same thing with logging, only forests take longer to grow back. What do the lumbermen think they're going to be cutting when the trees are gone? What they really SHOULD be doing is going into forest management. Sure it takes more people to properly manage a forest than it does to clearcut, but if it's "jobs" they're after then forestry would be a good deal.

If its fresh, fried correctly, and served immediately its good. If its been sitting on the buffet more then ten minutes...skip it.

Being from the south originally, I prefer the fried Oprah.
