You were using being in violation of UN resolutions as a justification,

Israel has been in violation of UN resolutions for decades... pointing out an obvious double standard which happens to be part of the basis for this conflict.

So, be critical of the US government your an American hater, critical of Israel your a jew hating Nazi

Mikey, what did Bush lie about ? Who did he murder ? Which draft did he dodge ? Seems to me, he jointed the Reserves, just like John Kerry. Did HE dodge the draft too ? As far as Presidents go, Clinton is still the only draft dodging coward we have to date.

I'm just trying to understand why you are ... the way you are. You very much operate on two sets of rules... one for "you and yours" which gives license to do anything (torture, starve, kill) and the other set of rules which applies to "everybody else". It boggles my mind that you can't see that the rules that you apply to "everybody else" are ALSO supposed to apply to "you and yours".

Can you explain to me the logic of saying: It's bad when "they" (torture, starve, kill) but okay when "we" (torture, starve, kill)?

You seem to think , falsly, that we and the Islamo-Jihadist operate on some what the same, moral grounds. I don't. We don't behead those who don't agree w/ our religion. We don't rape women, then stone them to death for not resisting enough. We don't torture. They do. We ask for information which will keep others , innocent men and women , from being killed. If , in attempting to get that information , we need to try different tactics, I'm fine w/ that. YOU seem to think that terrorist have more rights than their intended victims. I don't.

Why we still talking about this ? Seems like we have the same gorram discussion over and over, and yet you still don't get it. And when you don't get it, you insult me or my family, of which you know nothing, which tells me one hell of a lot about who you are.

And I'm tired of having the same discussions and getting no where.

Well, not really no. The people of his country didn't want another war, an entire generation of men had been wiped out in living memory in a war against Germany, Britain wasn't ready for war, as evidenced by the initial and shocking collapse of the Expeditionary force in 1939/1940. The Second World War crippled Britain, and it's unlikely it'll ever fully recover, so sitting back and judging Neville Chamberlain's from your position of faux moral superiority, detached from the context his decision was made in, and I think any real understanding of the British social and political situation at the time, seems to me a little pre-judgemental.
Quote:

Apparently not:
Quote:

By all accounts Bush was an excellent pilot, but apparently his enthusiasm cooled. In 1972, four years into his six-year guard commitment, he was asked to work for the campaign of Bush family friend Winton Blount, who was running for the U.S. Senate in Alabama. In May Bush requested a transfer to an Alabama Air National Guard unit with no planes and minimal duties. Bush's immediate superiors approved the transfer, but higher-ups said no. The matter was delayed for months. In August Bush missed his annual flight physical and was grounded. (Some have speculated that he was worried about failing a drug test--the Pentagon had instituted random screening in April.) In September he was ordered to report to a different unit of the Alabama guard, the 187th Tactical Reconnaissance Group in Montgomery. Bush says he did so, but his nominal superiors say they never saw the guy, there's no documentation he ever showed up, and not one of the six or seven hundred soldiers then in the unit has stepped forward to corroborate Bush's story.

After the November election Bush returned to Texas, but apparently didn't notify his old Texas guard unit for quite a while, if ever. The Boston Globe initially reported that he started putting in some serious duty time in May, June, and July of 1973 to make up for what he'd missed. But according to a piece in the New Republic, there's no evidence Bush did even that. Whatever the case, even though his superiors knew he'd blown off his duties, they never disciplined him.

Fair enough put. How'd I feel about it ? I don't know. I'd say most of our soldiers are decent, good kids. Not ALL, by any means, but most. Most have mom's and dads, brothers and sisters, etc.... family and friends back home, and it's not a stretch to wonder how they'd feel if their loved ones were done in a similar manner. Still, there's a war to be fought here, and some very bad folks these guys have to deal with. So THEIR lives are put at risk here. They're placed in a pickle of a situation. How hard do you press, and whom do you press, in order to " make an example " out of someone.

With out specifics, it's hard to really answer your question. I know that sometimes, police and soldiers will do things which appear far worse than they are.... put on a show, as it were. It's the use of theatrics, of a sort, to explain in a loud, clear manner w/ out actually having to DO much of anything, that they mean business. I'm guessing some of this was done. Possibly quite well, too. Also, I'm guessing that sometimes things went overboard, and mistakes were made. Don't know for sure, but it being war and all, it can't be ruled out. That's all I got at this time.

You really shouldn't try to participate in discussions that are this far above your pay grade.

Joe Wilson maintained that Iraq and Saddam Hussein WERE NOT trying to procure yellowcake Uranium from Niger in the 1998-2001 time period, and that the allegations that they were, were at best "dubious" - a conclusion the CIA reached as well.

I said it was no secret to anybody that Iraq already possessed hundreds of tons of the stuff, and in fact some 500 tons of it had been unaccounted for after the first Gulf War, when US troops had left the storage site unguarded for a prolonged period of time.

So trying to say Wilson did know before he didn't know is an asinine statement, to put it mildly. It's almost as if you believe that yellowcake uranium didn't even exist before Bush lied about it in 2003.

Since this is a hypothetical situation (and I was too tired last night to flesh out the situation, so to speak) assume that they grabbed... a one year-old baby girl, two-year old toddler boy, a five-year old girl, three boys ages six, eight and nine, a twelve year old girl, a teenage girl age 16, two teenage boys ages fiteeen and nineteen, all three mothers, and an elderly man and three elderly women. Let's assume that they raped everyone under the age of 16 and the mothers, and beat everyone to death. They mutilated the bodies and hung them up in the street.

What I'm asking about is your "gut reaction", not a thought-out response.

Just trying to get some perspective here. Not sure why you are trying to equate the aggressive interrogation tactics used against enemy combatants with crimes against civillian women and children. It is dishonest and bordering on strawman territory IMHO, hypothetical or not.

Since this is a hypothetical situation assume that they grabbed... a one year-old baby girl, two-year old toddler boy, a five-year old girl, three boys ages six, eight and nine, a twelve year old girl, a teenage girl age 16, two teenage boys ages fiteeen and nineteen, all three mothers, and an elderly man and three elderly women. Let's assume that they raped everyone under the age of 16 and the mothers, and beat everyone to death. They mutilated the bodies and hung them up in the street. What I'm asking about is your "gut reaction", not a thought-out response.

I'm trying to find Rapo's definitional boundaries. That is the purpose of hypothetical thought experiments. Apparently you don't understand that technique.

So, if this had actually happened, what is YOUR gut reaction?

Say a US soldier was captured and waterboarded to extract troop deployment intel instead of being beheaded, how would you feel about this hypothetical?

I would be sickened and disgusted and hope those guilty are punished under the full extent of the law.

I'd be glad he wasn't killed, and kind of amazed that the animals decided to sheathe their claws a bit.
But they'd still be animals.

Get it?

So, your reactions are about on-par with mine. Now, how would you feel if instead of raping and beating the subjects to death, they shot them execution-style? (Could you hold your response until Rap replies? I don't want to contaminate his answer w/ yours. Thanks. )

Ditto. I'd be pissed that he was tortured, glad he survived it, and worried about how much useful intel he gave up, if any, or if he simply lied to make the torture stop.

Possibly quite well, too. Also, I'm guessing that sometimes things went overboard, and mistakes were made. Don't know for sure, but it being war and all, it can't be ruled out. That's all I got at this time.
What if OUR troops did that ? Wouldn't happen. It just wouldn't. That's my gut reaction.

But what if it did happen? Those involved would be tried ( by the military ) and likely put to death. Some might just serve life, because they had to cop a plea, but that's just how things work out sometimes.

I didn't ask about what you thought might happen afterwards, what I was wondering was: What would your gut reaction be if it DID happen? Let's say once you got past the initial disbelief. Would you be shocked? Horrified? Would you be looking for exculpatory evidence? Would you feel sad? How would you feel?

Signy - I think you already got his gut reaction. His "gut reaction" would be that it never happened - couldn't; it's not possible. In other words, if this kind of thing is reported (My Lai, Abu Ghraib, etc.), it's simply made up. Never happened, never existed, nothing to see here, move along, because we all know Americans simply aren't capable of atrocities. That's the kind of thing that only a wicked, nefarious "they" would do.

And "Hero's" gut reaction would be the same, unless you happened to mention that the soldiers involved were Democrats - at which point he'd say they were guilty, or at least that they didn't believe in personal hygiene!

Hey brain donor, guess you don't know quite as much as you think you know, huh? I'll play along w/ hypotheticals, but when it comes to crying wolf and blaming America for things it didn't do, you can't forget Dick Durbin's remarks about Gitmo and that scurrilous dog Murtha and his condeming of the U.S. Marines for Haditha before any evidence what so ever had been looked at by.... ANYONE.

Haditha Marine prepares to sue Murtha over smear
Congressman had accused soldiers of killing 'in cold blood'

Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani
With most of the eight Marines charged in the Haditha, Iraq, incident now exonerated, the highest-ranking officer among the accused is considering a lawsuit against Democratic Rep. John Murtha, who fueled the case by declaring the men cold-blooded killers.

In an interview with nationally syndicated radio talk host Michael Savage, the lead attorney for Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani said he and his client will look into suing Murtha and the Time magazine reporter, Tim McGuirk, who first published the accusations by Iraqi insurgents.

But the attorney, Brian Rooney, said nothing will happen immediately because he wants Chessani, described as a devout Christian and the father of six homeschooled children, completely "out of the woods" legally before any action is taken. The government, through Lt. Col. S.M. Sullivan, today filed a notice that it would appeal the case to the next judicial level.

As WND reported, a military judge at Camp Pendleton in California yesterday dismissed charges that Chessani failed to properly investigate the Nov. 19, 2005 incident in which 24 Iraqi men, women and children were killed.
