I saw a similar study except they added a layer of anonymity. How much pain will you inflict the farther removed from your subject you are? Same basic study, 2 subjects, one giving and one getting shocks for wrong answers. The "teacher" was only told they could shock up to a certain amount for bad answers - no other directives.

Not too surprisingly, the amount of pain given increased as the giver's anonymity and emotional distance increased. By levels:

2 subjects face to face, mild shock.

+ a clear glass divider between the 2, more pain

+ the learner wore a hood covering their face, big increase

+ giver completely separated from and can't see the receiver, max pain

Adds to understanding the crowd mentality - you are more anonymous in a crowd + you are being given a directive. Uniforms, etc.

There are aspects of that with forums too.

We may create online personas but they're not really "us," not like in a face to face conversation (which I would prefer). We're separated by the internet, no photos for the most part, and we use usernames. We're all pretty anonymous here.

That's my edge though, arnie average, you'd lose me in a crowd of three.

By manner of dress, carriage, bearing, facial expression and body language, someone with that average look can pull off a lot, you'd never associate the person in that photo with the slouching grunger in the wheelchair if you didn't know in advance.

I did get my chops busted once by, of all the people, a young lady at a subway store.

I was working for a company that had been contracted to stop pilfering at a suppliers warehouse, and we determined it was going on at the loading dock, so I went with the low profile wino gig, something I do altogether a little too well, meh heh heh.

Well, when I muttered and shuffled to the counter, she leans over to me as she takes the fistfull of change for a cup of coffee and quietly whispers....
"When's the last wino you saw with perfect nails, mister ?"
And winked as she slid me the cuppa.

We did catch the guys, and I never did see that girl again, although I would have liked to - she had potential.
