Oh, well done.

Esp. kudos for a Myrna Loy reference.

For the fans of that other actor:

Asta belonged to Frank and Rudd Weatherwax. Their other Dog was Pal, who played Lassie. Seems like an unfair balance? They ended up training many dogs in hollywood other than their own, including Corky, Jackie Coogan's dog. There's a story there that's well known enough I think I don't have to post it.

Thanks for the nod. Glad I didn't go with Eddie Foy or Helen of Troy. Myrna just felt better for some reason. On another note, I did see your post where you said I attacked you. The miserable label was a response to the gigantic pile of conspiracies and endless whatevers that seem to consume you. Didn't mean to imply anything beyond that, but if I offended then I apologize.

Lol.

No need to apologize, and I'm pretty difficult to offend. I only tend to get offended on the behalf of others, which is why I get labelled as an apologist for Gaza or Iran. The fact is that people are people, and sometimes, certain members of this forum are so trying to defend Israel that they go to the point of being very offensive to their fellow humans.

Conspiracies, I believe in, as do you and as does everyone else.

Allow me to explain:

Regardless of what one believes happened on 9-11, it involves a conspiracy, even if that conspiracy is Osama Bin Laden conspired with members of Al Qaeda and sympathizers in the US to hijack airplanes and fly them into buildings. That's a conspiracy theory, but for the most part a workable one.

A non-workable conspiracy theory would be the 9-11 attacks were masterminded by Saddam Hussein to get back at the Bush family. That was also spouted by someone in govt, I don't remember who, but it relied on two men both having eaten at the Slavica in Prague, on a weekend. Turns out to have been a different weekend: There's the wrong fact. But theories like this are bound to run into trouble. I, myself have eaten at the Slavica on a few occassions, when in Prague. It's a nice place. (Reminds me of another conspiracy, one of my favorites, and also involving the Slavica: Vaclav Havel plotted the downfall of communism at regular meetings with his cohorts at the Slavica, which is a classy place. But right there, in plain view, exactly where the commies were not looking.)

But if you don't believe in conspiracies at all, then you are lead to only one possible conclusion about 9-11:

Two airplanes, due to pilot error or mechanical malfunction, flew into the world trade center towers only minutes apart. Later that day, another plane suffered a similar fate and hit the pentagon. Sounds pretty illogical, doesn't it?

The fact is, no crime above a certain level can be committed without a conspiracy, which is why conspiracy is a crime.

I try not to believe in theories. They're sketchy, and lead to misconceptions. When I spout some ramble that comes across as a conspiracy theory, it's possible that I have studied a subject in enough depth to understand the underlying conspiracy. This does not make me immune to being wrong, especially if some of my underlying facts are wrong.

I think that Pirate News often follows some conspiracy theory threads that the data does not justify. Sometimes his facts are wrong. Often his facts are right.

I try to look at everything from every source objectively, determine the facts, and reach my own conclusion.

Specifically, our disagreement was over Government and Country. In my view, a government is a group of people who declare themselves to be the head of a country, and they are terribly pesky things to get rid of. As my brother, who is as I said a professor of constitutional law, and very pro-govt. generally, put it "The only problem with anarchy is that eventually, someone would come along and set up a government."

My main problem with the govt. in DC is that it is even more unnecessary than any other govt., because it provides no service other than a couple of re-distribution of wealth agencies which could just as easily be run on a state level, and to run large banking scams and international wars.

Each state already possesses a govt. which provides schools, roads, and everything that a govt. should provide. Each state has its own military, the national guard, which by itself is more powerful than any entity which has threatened to attack us in over a century. The fact is, the NY national Guard, if in complete control of its own defense, would have intercepted the 9-11 attacks, if they had not been ordered to stand down. It could also easily defend against all enemies.

There's no reason that the US couldn't be more like Europe. We could be an American Union. Under our current system, each state contributes considerable amounts of money to the federal government, and gets a pittance back in various federal programs. For instance, here in new york, we pay over a quarter of a trillion a year to the feds, and get around 70 billion in supplemental welfare and education assistance. This means, on balance, it costs us over 200 billion a year, or twice our state's govt'l budget, for the privilege of being under the thumb of an oversize federal govt. If we did not, we could either radically reduce taxes, or hand every citizen a check for around $12,000 per year, or provide a much larger quantity of services.

My personal choice would be to have a mix of lowering taxes and providing a new program for helping business start-ups, but that's because I'm a conservative. I'm sure that I would have to argue with liberals over various state bureaucracies and welfare programs that they would want to set up. Still, I think it would be easy to see that not having to deal with the national debt and foreign wars would be a big help. And, if military action was truly needed, the National Guards of the United States have proven perfectly capable of dealing with them, just as European powers have united in coalitions to deal with very real threats overseas.

Here's a bone that's picked over here a lot. The citizens of New York were overwhelmingly unhappy with the handling of the war in Iraq. As were the people of Poland. The people of Poland had the right to have their forces recalled. This is a long and not very new debate. It was going on when this country was founded.

The short of it is, nothing against America, at all. I have issues with its current govt, and I don't mean Bush or Obama, but the think tank-lobbyist-congressional stooge and secretaries and advisors who actually run the show, and the general process by which this is done, which is usually "however they feel like it."

Here's one: Citigroup, a largely Saudi owned firm, based here in NY, said, when the mortgage crisis broke "Oh, don't worry about us, we have around 2 trillion in assets." Then, when they found out there was a bailout coming they said "We need money, and we need it now." And were handed by the unelected Secretary of the Treasury without check or balance from anywhere, a check with a balance of $326 billion dollars. Why? Apparently because they're just friends. Meanwhile, $3 billion was struck from the budget for stem cell research, another $3 billion from the program to fight HIV, $20 billion to rebuild the World Trade Centers, etc. etc. Have any issues with that? Then you know where I'm coming from. It's not anti-american at all.

My personal perspective, I'm a faith-based social and fiscal conservative. But I'm not about to jump on the bandwagon with anything put forth as "our patriotic duty" simply because some shmuck in Washington says so. I think for myself, and I read and research a lot. I don't have a lot of immutable personal beliefs except for
1. The right of each individual to do their own thing as long as it doesn't bop anyone else's nose.
2. The right of each group to collectively agree to do their own thing as long as it doesn't bop anyone else's nose.
3. The right of the earth to not be destroyed by the process of people doing their own thing, which I suppose logically would be the right of any species to do its own thing as long as it doesn't bop another species nose.
It doesn't bother me if a hunter goes out and shoots a deer, if he doesn't hunt it to extinction.

Conservation was originally a conservative principal, and in every election, a GOP platform plank, including recent ones. Govt. regulation does not seem to have done much help. I think that this is another complicated issue that requires a lot of thought.

I'm also a big "Thin Man" fan, in case you didn't notice :)

America loves a winner!

But I don't want to look like Myrna Loy.

Up until recently I didn't necessarily want to look like her either, but with current events as they are I think it's the right way to go. Because it seems like it's the end of the world as we know it. The McCain/Palin debacle, the Bush/RNC avalanche of ineptness destroying the Republican Party for who knows, maybe forever, the power shift to Obama and the Left, the age of anything goes, all standards and traditions and cherished beliefs to be openly mocked, challenged, and defeated, all while being openly encouraged and cheered on by the liberally entrenched press and media and celebrity lemmings, the economic collapse and onset of govt. socialism, 2 endless wars, ongoing terrorism, retirement plans under siege, etc. That's why I need my Fruity Obama Bar.

That's a pretty bleak and accurate picture.

But here's a start. It's not all long dresses and short hair, you know. A gal can do her self up as she pleases. These are the 1930s, and not the 1830s, oh dear I'm getting ahead of myself, now where was I?

Oh yes, but of course, why didn't your remind me? I knew I should, so anyway, I went right down to the camera shop and I got these pictures from the studio in a snap, or several snaps, so to speak, anyhow, here they are, whether you like them or not....

I like this one, I think it's very ahead of its time, the signature is the photographers, but this fashion would suit any time. And any place.

You can hardly tell, but I just found out she was a redhead.

Now that's a little two long. A girl can't get any serious detective work done in that, especially with a little dog nipping at their heels, assuming that there are heels under that. well, aw no offense to anyone...

Oh, welcome to the age of the internet where even with safety search on, everyone comes up nekkid as a jaybird. I think I better get in shape for this year before it happens to me.

[edit] I removed the naked picture, to find it, follow this link
http://www.born-today.com/Today/08-02.htm
and click on this picture

Curiously, the picture it is the only one to turn naked when you click on it.

Oh first they go an colorize me, and then they go and take all my clothes off. How fair is that, I ask you.

[Re-edit]
Myrna Loy is hot. If your male or female and of the persuasion of chicks I date, you might want to check these out

The naked pictures come from an early movie called "The Barbarian" which came before they weren't allowed to do things like that. Back in those days, Muslims were barbarians, and sexy, and being a sex slave for one was something every girl could fantasize about. The whole phenomenon is largely accredited to a 1921 film called "The Sheik" in which Rudolph Valentino is the brutal enslaver. The film-makers had intended to portray muslims as despicably primitive, and wholly undesirable, and expected the viewer to see the plight of Agnes Ayres as one of deperate and savage victim (shield your eyes ladies.) But, to their surprise, it had the reverse affect, women everywhere wanted to be that slavegirl. Valentino was probably no small part of the equation. Anyway, it led to a series of movies, probably ending in this one starring Myrna Loy.

After that, the Willie Hays Code went into effect, and Tarzan and Jane had to put her clothes on, and the code, also called the hollywood code, remained unchanged for 35 years. It was then replaced by the MPAA. Now it is still pretty much in effect, but there was a brief respite when you could break it and merely get a PG, then it became R, and now NC-17.
