The only thing you didn't get wrong in that post was how to spell Rush's name. Bravo.

Saw Rush on Hannity's show tonight. Man, he looks pretty bad. Not only has he gained back much of the weight he'd lost, but the cochlear implant makes him look like a Borg. I guess I'd never seen it before. I knew there was something implanted surgically, but hell, there's this quarter sized device sticking out of his head behind his ear, and a big wire that goes from it that looks like some custom job that somebody did in their garage. The guy looks like a mess.

Bill Maher has the advantage of occasionally being funny. He has two annoying traits, one, being as glued to the left as Coulter is glued to the right, bad break-up I guess. It's nice to know this isn't about politics. But he does have a tendency to be offensive and just a complete a**hole at times. Not high on the "class" list. It's something that people don't notice on one end of the spectrum, but in the middle, some people on the left get on to the subject of christians and they're just as bad as some people on the right on the subject of muslims. Coulter, true, has no real redeeming traits, she just tries to appal people.

Meanwhile...
Limbaugh's a cyborg. That explain's a lot.

First of all - we don't want to offend drug addicts by lumping them in with...ahem - Lumpy Limbaugh - or as we like to call him, Jabba the Yutz. So we won't. But this is what he said about our Antonio Villaraigosa on his radio show:

I shook [Clinton's] hand, he left, comes back [with] the mayor of Los Angeles," he told listeners. "I thought it was a Secret Service agent, maybe a shoeshine guy. Turns out he gives me his card, I said, 'Oh, my gosh, it's the mayor of Los Angeles.'"

Then Villaraigosa looked at Limbaugh's card and said,"Oh my gosh, it's the ambassador to the 17th century."

As to the "I hope he fails" thing.

I expect that sooner or later the Obama Administration is going to launch an offensive on 2nd Amendment rights. I consider this misguided and counterproductive. I hope he fails in this effort, because his success would mean, in my opinion, a reduction in our Constitutional rights.

If, on the other hand, he trys to overturn the Defense of Mariage Act, I hope he succeeds.

What makes you think that Obama would succeed in overturning D.O.M.A. ? Every state which has allowed its citizens to vote on same sex marriage has voted it down. Even far Left wing California. Twice. I say it stands, and for good reason. Even Obama said he was against same sex marriage. He'd be breaking with his campaign theme if he tried to overturn D.O.M.A.

The assault on the 2nd Amendment has already begun with the appointment of Eric Holder as attorney general. He said in his confirmation hearing that even though the Heller decision changes the landscape there are many "reasonable" restrictions that still can be passed. You would think that #1 law enforcement person in the country would see that enforcing existing laws would be the most "reasonable" thing to do.

Well, while everyone ELSE on the conservative end of things was throwing a pissy little temper tantrum, some of the more moderate and rational folk were installing some damned good set-piece legal and political engagements to defend certain rights which may come under assault, primarily second and fourth amendment issues.

A set-piece engagement is when you have considerable time to have everything in positions and angles most favorable to what you want to accomplish, which when followed up by a defence in depth can wear out an opponent without ever really having to slug it out with them.

Course, I'd have liked more help than I got, but those who were busy throwing a tantrum instead of digging in, well - if they get plowed under that's less hassle for us and more for the other guys, oh well.

They had their chance, and blew it acting like petty little children instead of adults back when it counted.

Yes, douche means "shower" and a douchenozzle would actually be a showerhead. It's not one of those words you can really just interchangeably work around the language. Though it now has began to circulate as just "douche."

Insults have their own curious etymology. One of my favorites is the word Kafir in S. Africa, which was used by whites in place of the N_ word during apartheid. The word actually means "Not a muslim." The boers had originally heard black muslims using it to refer to other blacks who were outsiders, and picked up on the negativity implied.

Honkey is another one, which is just short for "Hungarian" and comes from I think Chicago dock workers of the late 19th century.

Speaking of insults and their origins.....I have family from Louisiana, though not Cajun, and I'm fascinated with the culture and history of the state. The term 'coon ass" is often used , derogatorily , to describe Cajuns. *According to the French Wiktionary, the French Larousse dictionnary, and the French Wikipedia, "connasse" entered the French language at the beginning of the 19th century and the term pejoratively indicates the vulva to designate a stupid person. The closest translation in English would be "stupid."). Domengeaux asserted that Frenchmen used the term in reference to Cajun soldiers serving in France during World War II, and that Anglo-American soldiers overheard the term, transformed it into "coonass," and brought it back to the U.S. as a disparaging term for Cajuns.

Research has since disproved Domengeaux's "connasse" etymology. Indeed, photographic evidence shows that Cajuns themselves used the term prior to the time in which "connasse" allegedly morphed into "coonass.

A couple of others

Cretin actually comes from a doctors notes in france refering to a remote christian colony with a lot of inbreeding, and has nothing to do with crete.

The much debated origin of the N_ word I was able to trace back to ancient rome, where it had no negative connotation. The Romans, when fighting Carthage, deliberately requested from their north African allies, not yet territories, to find them "niger" or black men to man make a regiment out of, because of their noted skill, regionally, as warriors. Those Niger Roman legions later became the Niger tribe, and conquered much of West Africa, the Niger river, Niger, and Nigeria are named for them. At the time of the western purchase of slaves, The major slave trading state was Dahomey, now Togo&Benin, which was surrounded by the arc of the Niger river, and Niger tribes. Dahomey consistently raided the these tribes for slaves to sell, just as they had been doing for their own purposes since around the 9th century (interesting side story, the origin of the Dogon, often believed by new agers to be an ancient early human civilization seeded by aliens or some such nonsense, actually came from around the 10th century, from Niger fleeing the slave wars.) Anyway, the first, and majority, of slaves arriving in the new world were Niger peoples, and it was appears as a self-descriptor before it appears as a derogatory used by whites. In early American slavery of course, there wasn't a fine delineation of black=slave, I believe not until 1740. But in the process of the evolution of institutionalized racism, the word got associated with slave status.

Some are less logical. I heard yesterday that nerd was coined by Dr. Seuss. Geek is a stranger one. I recall as a kid geek(fool) being applies to old people, like geezer(mummer).

The only logical trend I see in epithets is that the status of the group changes the connotation of the word over time. No one today would be ashamed to call themselves a geek.

Some seem created for the express purpose of defaming a group of people, like "islamofascist."

And some get coined for more noble reasons...

My niece, being... well, related to me and mine, has the stubborn temperment and the mouth to go with it, and I hadda explain to her in no small fashion that M-F is *not* ladylike nor appropriate language from her, cause it's her favorite expression when things do not go as planned.

So someone explained the concept of Murphy's law to her while upbraiding her for coarse language...

And while "Arrgrh! MURPHY!" doesn't exactly sound too ladylike neither, it's a definate improvement on what she WAS saying.

Holy crap. Why is this not told and repeated more often? I've ALWAYS wondered at the origins of the N word, and wanted to know how it became such an offense to the black people. Of course , KNOWING that it is is one thing, but how it got to be that way, totally different. Now, maybe most can associate Niger w/ the 'N' word, but how the word morphed into the latter has often been a subject I've pondered.

Now, if we could find out why the C word rhyming with 'punt' is so offensive to females, that'd be a mystery solved!

A couple of reasons. It's no mystery if you dig far enough, in fact the Niger tribe still exists, though it is greatly diminished due to a thousand years of war, and internal fragmentation. It's also added a layer of confusion. If you pronounce it in the original latin, that's a hard g, but when the british colonials came, they gave took Nigeria and pronounced the Niger like Nigel. The French, meanwhile, took Niger, and pronounced it as it would be in French, with an ee and zh, like knee, and casual, and air. Neezhair.

I think the reason that various urban myths about the origin get circulated is in the nature of academia: Learn, teach. You teach what you learned, the same misinformation can be perpetuated for centuries (Like Columbus.) One of the less frequently circulated factoids is that America was not named after Amerigo Vespucci, but rather the other way around. America was already called America, but it was a small nation of Amerique indians (again, with imposed French pronunciation.) Albergio Vespucci renamed himself Amerigo, so that in Latin he would be Americus. He wanted the land named after himself.

But the entire original Columbus myth perpetuated for centuries through out written very of the non-researching oral tradition. So too, stories about the N_ word origin have. I don't know that it matters, it's how the word is used. I'm glad they are reclaiming the name, and in time, we can forget about the whole thing and stop being afraid of words. Creeping up on us is a whole new slew of things like redneck and trailer trash, etc. as well as terms I object to like "islamo-fascist."

I want to say a word about why I find "islamo-fascist" objectionable. It's an intended epithet. it's not what they call themselves. It's therefore innately hostile. I can berate socialists, but I don't throw it around as a label, I use it for people like Saddam Hussein who name their ruling Party "The Baathist Socialist Party." Al Qaeda should be damned for who they really are. Wahabists, Al Qaeda, Mujahideen, etc. Fascism is too much of an epithet, so much so that I only use the term Corporatist now, from Mussolini. But even so, very few of these guys are Fascists, a lot of them are anarchists. The most Fascist is probably Saudi Arabia, or the Taliban. But no way does it describe the Taliban. But accuracy was never the point of such an epithet. It was just attaching something negative to Islam, sort of like saying "radical islamic terrorism" when refering to "insurgencies in general." Yeah, sure, there is "radical islamic terrorism," but there's a lot of insurgency that is anti-US or anti-Israel that isn't really radical or islamic or even terrorist, it's just a defensive militia of some sort.

I just went on a rant against feminism, which is always an unpopular thing to do, but I wanted to diverge for a second into Rush and his term "Feminazi." While, sure, in recruitment procedures, and propagnda, this might be fair, it's wildly inaccurate. The Nazis were very pro-population growth (their own) and feminists are just the opposite. They're probably more the femipuritans. But anything created to be an epithet is just disingenuous. Feminism, as it stands, is already a self-destructing self-described moniker. Hand it to the people who hand it to themselves. If people don't want a negative connotation, they should probably consider collective standing and action, which is why blacks reclaiming the N_ word is such a good idea. I mean, of all the groups out there, no one is yelling at someone "You gorram Quaker you!"

Neocons dubbed themselves neocons, and also socialists. But here's another one to gnaw over: How come Nazis and Jews share the same view of Judaism. I don't have an answer to this, but it bugs me: They both view it as an lysogenic virus, rather than a religion. If you have some jewish ancestor somewhere, then automatically you're jewish. For Israel, this means its your duty to uphold jewish law, and join and defend them, etc., and for the Nazis I think it's about being able to label and exclude anyone on Earth. I'm sure if you dig back far enough, everyone is a jew. I recently read that genetically, the world's dominant ethnicity in the all inclusive genetic tree theory is Mongol. So, I guess we should all build yurts and celebrate Genghis Khan.

As far as this goes:

That's obvious. You can call a man a dick, it's the same. Or you can do it in yiddish, schumck and putz. It's like calling someone a fucker. It's reducing them to a reproductive organ. If you think about it logically, there's no reason that fucker should be an insult. "You're someone who has sex!" Okay, I have a crazy christian uncle who calls people "fornicaters" and means something negative and sinful, because he believes its wrong. He's part of darwin's self-eliminating cult, passed on by someone who wished him ill, which is why he has one son and that son is gay, because he never let his son near any girls for fear that he might "sin."

Just some random thoughts on how fucked up humanity can be.

Yeah, I never understood that... Telling kids that sex is a "sin" - and that that's where kids come from, and then NOT expecting them to be damaged by your telling them that they are the evil hellspawn of a sinful act. Doesn't compute for me.

Mike

You're just not cynical enough. If you had read about the various population control efforts, including "selective population control" you'd have met the "encourage a population to select itself for extinction via population control" which is a highly evolved form of this.

This is all UN charter genocide stuff, but the perps have evolved.

Look at England vs. Ireland as a case in point. First, it was "kill the inferior race" this is genocided for dummies. Then, it came to "persecute them based on a random thing associated with them, like their religion, while never admiting that you're targeting their race." This was followed by "remove and restrict food supply" then "encourage migration" and then "deliberately limit reproduction." The new ones are "force them to force themselves to limit reproduction," and "make them believe that limiting their own reproduction is a right, and make them fight for it."

I read Margaret Sanger's (Planned Parenthood) book "The New Race" (eugenics publishing) where she actually openly advocates that last one as a feminist cause, and deliberately and openly says to make them believe that limiting their own reproduction is a right, and make them fight for it. Now, of course that falls under the UN charter on genocide.

Now, if you consider the English, in the beginning after the first colonization of the isles, the Irish vastly outnumbered the English. Now there are 15 English for every Irish, and the English are rapidly taking Ireland for the land, and exploiting EU open borders to do it.

Look around the world and you find this thing all over, especially in Africa, SE Asia. But in the west it has been forced to evolve this level of discretion. Probably also in India via castes. China, of course, is totally blatant about it still. But the real question is, who really wrote that one child policy, and how much did the party heads get for it? Most favored nation status?

Something to gnaw on.

Because calling someone a cunt as an insult means that one finds cunts to be bad, and thus people who have cunts are implied as being less than those who have dicks. Does that solve the mystery for you?

I always thought it was because it's an acronym for "Can't Understand Normal Thinking".

Um, I'm not sure that's not one snark over the line there caveman.

Here's one I don't get: Dog, Bitch, Fox, Vixen.

Think, four canines all with very different connotations when applied to a female. A man is usually a pig, there were times when he might have been a dog, or even a cat.

No one ever calls you a mongoose.
