Imagine my surprise when I opened my mailbox - "check other mail".

That's 800 pages of emails at 20 per page...

My email host upgrated to 1GB, so nothing bounced.

I suspect one of those new viruses hacking newby computers, turning them into spammers by remote control.

Lemme guess, that this latest pain in the ass, right ?

Goes right through most american commercial firewalls and anti-virus too, or at least one variant of it does - cause of those big gaping hardwired backdoors required by law. *spit*

FYI - you can fake it out by feeding it a fake Ukranian keyboard layout, if you're stuck on a network using WinDoze and commercial US software.

You ever wonder why those with half a brain rely on Frisk, F-secure and Finnish or Netherlands based software and companies for real PC security and advice ?

Hell, even the damn Russians - because they do not require or demand those backdoors which are known to every freakin hacker and useless for their intended purpose, not to mention the evergrowing suspicion that certain AV companies are behind more than half the viruses, to sell products which clutter up a PC and degrade it's performance so badly it's almost as bad as getting the damn viruses, at least they're free!

Or that certain firewalls (I'm looking at YOU ZoneAlarm) have in the past been bought out by fronts for some countries intel people and misused in that fashion ?
I.E checkpoint software (based in a county notorious for dirty deeds) bought it and suddenly...

I always had the suspicion many of the so-called hackers are "plants" or agents of the very same companies that send out the threat reports.

It's pretty much like the auto industry, they could definitely make a better car with zero emissions but then they wouldn't sells as many cars year to year.....

It takes a level of geek to get it working though.
Fortunately, most of it you can google.

As for those hackers, et. al. yes, and virus warnings are sent out by those who wrote the virus which is the anti-virus company, and the circulars that warn against viruses are just like any other FWD, they exist to collect email addressed.

Never FWD a FWD, because bots are sitting like mites on the wire listening for strings of text they recognize so they can digest the email address list and send it back to momma.

Oh, one more trap. In case there's anyone who doesn't know this: Never use the "Send this story to" function. It exists to collect email addresses.

Kaspersky is the baddest of asses, and it's free. Free forum support to eliminate any virus or malware. They worked with me for 4 months removing 100,000 viri.

All I lost was my windows printer driver, when I first used a crappy virus scan. But that's a partial lobotomy for the printing I do. Have to use a second computer for that.

Lessons learned -- back everything up and reformat the harddrive, its 10,000 times faster.

Now I've got a great firewall (Online Armor = free) and antivirus (Avira = free) and anti Malware (spybot = free). Bring it on.

As for the 15,000 emails, I have to delete 20 at a time (when I've got nothing better to do), and hope the crappy spam filter catches them next time.

I may have to change my webpage, if spybots are reading my email links for nefarious purposes.

IMO, you'd be better off using Ad-aware to remove spy and mal-ware. I used spybot for a long time, then caught a virus that knocked it out. Ad-aware and Norton, kicked the virus and it's alien babies out of my computer.

Ironically, I find myself in agreement with Citizen again. This is not a new problem for MS, it's been getting steadily worse, and it's not about to do a reversal of that trend. IMHO
