Man pulls out 13 of his own teeth with pliers 'because he couldn't find an NHS dentist'

Hmmm. I've been waiting for an appointment with a VA doctor in USA for the past 12 years. Guess I've have to buy myself a scalpel. Dang socialized medicine!

It's actually easier to do with a jewelry kit, and probably a little less painful, although past a certain point you reach pain saturation and it can't really hurt any MORE, yanno.

I had a molar, cracked in a fight, that had worn down to the nerve and then become infected, and since no one would *do* shit about it for less than a thou, which I didn't have.....

Had to work pretty quick too, since I had to get the tricky part (cutting down to and exposing the root) done before the pint of cheap whiskey I chugged to dull the pain started slowing my reflexes.

There's a point in there when the pain just gets so damn bad you either stop caring, or your body starts shutting it out as mere noise, and it gets quite a bit easier to finish the job when that happens.

Also had to remove a lot of post-accident stitches that had sunk in and become infected while a four way brawl between me, the insurance company*, the hospital and the state was goin on and they were refusing any treatment whatever.

*My employer had just changed insurance companies during that week, and the old one dumped me while the new one refused to pick me up - and that one they got away with cause I had to pick my fights in order to survive, the bastards.

Until all that got resolved, my 'primary care provider' was actually a local vet I was bribing under the table.

Let's just say socialised medicine couldn't possibly suck any worse than what we have now, crummy care beats NO care.

Really, what is it with Brits and their teeth?

Seriously, that guy looked like he had a mouth full of corn...

Do you guys not brush your teeth or something? I mean is toothpaste outlawed over there? Are toothbrushes considered a dangerous weapon?

Naw, it's just a racist slur. Or nationalist, not sure there's a difference. I saw more bad teeth in the states actually, though everyone on TV had bleached theirs, which isn't actually healthy. You know healthy teeth aren't actually supposed to be brilliant white, right?

Seriously?

Edited: Seriously, what is it with their teeth? Everyone knows its bad. Everyone can see its bad. Just Google search "British teeth" and you'll get a horror show...

So why? I mean, really?

Is it that we have fluoride in our water? Do they?

Is it the food they eat?

For a people who like to talk so much, you'd think they would be all about dental hygiene.

Oh, I stand corrected, if it was in a cartoon...

Glad to see the Simpsons is finally replacing the woeful American education system...

EDIT:
Oh, you mean how like everyone knows all Americans are fat and stupid? You mean kinda like that?

For a people who like to invade other countries a lot, you'd think they'd work out once in awhile and learn something.

I mean, Jeebus....is it the beer they drink?

(Btw, thats pretty freakin hardcore, Frem)

Or is it the socialized dental care? Is it the fact that they CAN'T see a dentist?

I wonder if anyone has done a study on this?

I mean, cus if I was over there and someone did this...

then I would do this...

You'd have to fit in the airplane seat first, and if you're anything like the average yank, your arse won't fit through the door.

That's assuming you even have a passport, or know what one is

Do you just not want to SEE your toes?

I didn't realize the UK had quite such a bad reputation for their teeth. I'd say it's likely just taking a stereotype too far though. I've got decent teeth and I don't think I've made any extra special effort to keep it that way. I have a good dentist, I go for my check-ups, brush everyday...

I think if this guy had 13 teeth that required removal, not finding a dentist to do it was the least of his troubles. Better to prevent it happening at all.

Just try it and see :)
Not necessary true, btw, sometimes no care is better than crummy care. If you can leave the hospital with the problem you came in with, and no additional health problems, count yourself lucky.

That goes for the US as well.

Wait, he was looking for a dentist in his teeth???

Dear God it looks like he's going to pop them back in his mouth and eat them with his gums. Muslims are so weird.

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

As the story goes:

"The spokesman said: 'As well as 34 dental practices, we have seven dental access centres across East Riding of Yorkshire, including Beverley, where Mr Boynton could access a full range of NHS dentist services.
'So there is absolutely no reason why anyone should have to resort to pulling out their own teeth. NHS East Riding of Yorkshire has invested around £1 million in helping dentists target new patients. At many of our dental practices appointments are being offered to new patients within two weeks."

I think the guy has something loose further up than the tooth area.

FWIW, I worked with a young person whose father (not a dentist) pulled all her teeth b/c he thought they didn't look right. Since they were wealthy by US standards and could have paid for any level of dental care they desired, I put it down to a somewhat nutty father and a situation that was probably child abuse.

This kind of fixation (so to speak) isn't unheard of.

I DID die at a dentist office. Seems nobody told the assistant ho to turn on oxygen when gassing nitrous.

Did the whole "out of body" thing, bouncing off the ceiling, looking down on my lifeless corpse.

Had to go back to have 4 teeth pulled using a 6-inch needle jammed in the roof of my mouth into my skull/brain. Isn't that called a lobotomy?

In reference to the story Cit posted.
University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore ain't bad, but they have a massive backlog, I've had some work done there before, but it took six weeks to get an appointment at all, and two months before they had an open spot.

Wulfie, ya gotta remember that I am at this time only 68% OEM parts by volume and less than that by weight.

My pet frankenstein docs keep joking that sooner or later imma wind up a brain in a box.

These days I have a pretty good set of docs but they're all mad scientist types since I fire any doc who tells me "it can't be done" or suggests I just resign myself to a wheelchair and give up.

And they're DAMN good, back in 94 "Ozzy" was was one guy working out of a puny little office - now he's CEO of the whole she-bang, and while he no longer works on patients, he does come check in when I've broken or damaged their latest "invincible" prosthetic and have a laugh with his protege, who built the most recent ones.

They just got a StarScanner recently, which is a widget for scanning the skulls of infants who need those freaky lookin helmets without actually having to cast and mold, which is a right pain in the butt and frustrating to both infant and physician - the StarScan, you just stick the little munger on the table, and FWEEP, bout 2 seconds later ya got a full detailed scan in a file form which you can port directly to the fabricator and have a helmet in a much shorter time than you would having to ship the casting, and it's way more accurate providing for a better, more comfortable fit.

Most of the docs I know up here are somewhere between mildly arrogant fighter-jock and downright mad scientist - hell, if you ever need laser eye stuff done, man, Doc Haddad is your guy!
http://www.lasereyeinstitute.com/
I can't for various reasons, but Fremgirl went there after being told "it cannot not be done" by dozens of other docs, and she's got 20/20 perfect now, and that from ye olde coke bottle lenses.

The guy uses the machine most places use... as an ornament to decorate the lobby, lol.

Also worthy of note is Touch Bionics and their I-Limb system, which is downright damned awesome.
http://www.touchbionics.com/index.php

Of course, that's all for yanno... normal use.
For those "nasty little surprises" you'd have to talk to Ripper, and his nick alone is all you'll get from me.
