I'm going to pretend that you're something other than a bitter partisan, and ask you a real question: How did you feel about the $700 billion bank bailout?

Let them eat cake.

That's when I bailed on Bush, it was a bad idea. We should let weak companys either go under or get bought out by strong ones. Barry and the Dems are doing what Bush did x2! Plus even you have to admit this should be called the "2009 Pig Package".

PIRATECAT

What really sucks is this money is gonna be blown on crapola. Most of it will be dished out
before O'Bama's second election. Paying everybody off. Now I would spend it on rockets to blast monkeys into space. Underwater nukes on coral reefs. Cool stuff. Instead of building a worthless B1 bomber throw the Army of bone with armored roach coach. The Navy could get some missile lauchen jet skis. Maybe build a pyramid in Kansas City put alittle restaurant at the top. Things

"Battle of Serenity, Mal. Besides Zoe here, how many-" "I'm talkin at you! How many men in your platoon came out of their alive".

The reason Obama is so desperate to get his Democrat pork package passed so quickly is not because he thinks the economy will be in endless recession if it doesn't pass, his economic advisors are telling him it's now or never because there are already signs that the economy has bottomed and recovery may come sooner than later. Home sales numbers for December were up 6% year over year and the rate of decline in retail sales is slowing. The job numbers are still terrible but unemployeemnet always continues to go up even after a recovery begins. This non-stimulus package is totally unnecessary at this point and will be a drag on the economy for years to come. The only reason Obama wants it immediately is so he can take credit for the coming economic recovery that will be a result of the normal business cycle more than anything government does.

On the previous bank bailout, I favored that because there was a real possibility of major bank failures and the total collapse of the banking system. That threat has now passed and we've only spent 350 billion of the 700 allotted. Hopefully Obama will use the second half of the money to remove bad assets from the banks to shore up their balance sheets so that they will feel comfortable enough to start loaning money again.

DREAMTROVE

Whozit,

That's late to bail on Bush, but you're young. I bailed on him about 18 months in, Patriot Act worried me, when I finally got the full dose of what this was about, and we went to war in afghanistan, created a giant new 300,000 employee beaurocracy paid for by deficit spending, then I knew we were dealing with shmucks.

But good for you for being consistent. It's important that we are objective, and support and oppose the same ideas under both presidents.

Imho, this bill is less about pork, and more about subverting process. it's full of things that would never pass a budget review, but are liberal agenda items. Most of them I don't take issue with, because they're not the kind of liberal agenda that comes into your home and tells you how to live. But from a fiscal perspective, and one of process, both bills are appalling. if you want to do it, put it in the budget, let it go through review. If it won't pass, and you still want it done, find someone in the private sector.

So Obama wants a railroad? Have you been on Amtrak? I have, a lot, I don't fly. It's rude city. The govt. doesn't need to build a railroad, all it has to do is to repeal the string of anti-railroad legislation that was put in place by big oil.

When I worked for a broker, we were going over a portfolio, and checking the corporate legal and financial issues of each company, and I found this gold mine of bad policy. There are just a number of laws that say "If you're a corporation, you can do XYZ, except if you're a railroad." Stuff like that. Get rid of the barriers to rail and rail will appear, and it will be private, cost the taxpayer nothing, and tickets will be cheaper (competition), service will be better, and trains will arrive on time. Just a thought.

OOC, if you had your 'druthers how should the economy be run? Is it the Federal deficit that bothers you? Or is it the idea of corporate welfare? Or sending soldiers to foreign lands to support our (economic) interests? Where do you draw the line between legitimate government economic policy (if you believe there is such a thing) and really bad ideas, and what do you base it on?

Ummm... I looked at the repubs list of "waste". Some of it did indeed seem wasteful. but I thought there were some good ideas in it. Here's the list:
Quote:

$2 billion earmark to re-start FutureGen, a near-zero emissions coal power plant in Illinois that the Department of Energy defunded last year because it said the project was inefficient.

Possibly a bad idea, possibly a good technology. Perhaps could use an independent scientific review? I'd w/draw this request.
Quote:

A $246 million tax break for Hollywood movie producers to buy motion picture film.
Jeez!!
Quote:

$650 million for the digital television converter box coupon program
There are a lot of reason to go digital; especially to increase the effective bandwidth. But yeah: let's just go digital and screw the hindmost.
Quote:

$88 million for the Coast Guard to design a new polar icebreaker (arctic ship).
Maybe they need one. Anyone ever thought of that?
Quote:

$448 million for constructing the Department of Homeland Security headquarters.$248 million for furniture at the new Homeland Security headquarters.
I have a grotch against DHS. Let 'em eat cake.
Quote:

$600 million to buy hybrid vehicles for federal employees.
I think it's a great idea.
Quote:

$400 million for the Centers for Disease Control to screen and prevent STD's.
The CDC has been underfunded for a decade now. Why is this "waste"???
Quote:

$1.4 billion for rural waste disposal programs.
Not sure where this is leading to. To prevent waterway and ground table pollution? For material recovery? To keeps those mountains of flyash from sliding down into the nearest river? To rehabilitate mining areas? To haul away those trucks up on blocks in the front yard? Might be a good idea, since rural areas are often the poorest and least able to manage these kinds of programs. Might be a bad idea. Needs more info.
Quote:

$125 million for the Washington sewer system.
I've been told it really NEEDS a makeover. In fact, so do the sewer systems of all major metropolitan areas which are anywhere from 100 to 200 years old, and really deteriorated..
Quote:

$150 million for Smithsonian museum facilities.
Given all the crying infrastructural needs, maybe let this pass
Quote:

$1 billion for the 2010 Census, which has a projected cost overrun of $3 billion.
I know how it feels to work your buns off with no funding. An accurate census is required by the constitution, and is the basis for allocation of funds and political representation. Maybe not the most urgent program but definitely not "wasteful".
Quote:

$75 million for "smoking cessation activities."
If it works, it will prevent hundreds of millions in health-care costs.
Quote:

$200 million for public computer centers at community colleges.
Community colleges are desperate for funds, and people w/o access to the internet of computers can only get there through libraries and community colleges. Anyone who doesn't support this is a scrooge.
Quote:

$75 million for salaries of employees at the FBI.
Prolly underfunded.
Quote:

$25 million for tribal alcohol and substance abuse reduction.
Again, if it works, it will a big benefit.
Quote:

$500 million for flood reduction projects on the Mississippi River.
I guess you don't remember the floods in the past decade which cost billions in damage?
Quote:

$6 billion to turn federal buildings into "green" buildings.
Again, I think this is a GREAT idea. Over time the improvements will pay back in reduced energy costs.
Quote:

$500 million for state and local fire stations. $650 million for wildland fire management on forest service lands.
Desperately needed.
Quote:

$1.2 billion for "youth activities," including youth summer job programs.
Oh yeah, because investing in our youth is SOOO wasteful!
Quote:

$88 million for renovating the headquarters of the Public Health Service. $412 million for CDC buildings and property. $500 million for building and repairing National Institutes of Health facilities in Bethesda, Maryland.

Possible they need it. Wouldn't know without a report.
Quote:

$160 million for "paid volunteers" at the Corporation for National and Community Service.
Even NGOs need full-time staff.
Quote:

$5.5 million for "energy efficiency initiatives" at the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration.
Okay, I have no idea where THIS is coming from!
Quote:

$850 million for Amtrak.
Which is heavily used.
Quote:

100 million for reducing the hazard of lead-based paint.
Which will improve the IQs of millions of children everywhere, since there is NO level below which lead doesn't have an effect. But yeah- investing in our children is too wasteful!
Quote:

$75 million to construct a "security training" facility for State Department Security officers when they can be trained at existing facilities of other agencies.
????
Quote:

$110 million to the Farm Service Agency to upgrade computer systems.
Aw, hell, they should include the IRS and Social Security and the FAA as well!!!!
Quote:

$200 million in funding for the lease of alternative energy vehicles for use on military installations.
What's wrong with that?

All of these "wasteful" program, BTW, come out to a grand total of about 18 billion our of the 800 billion stimulus. But rather than look at the facts, some peeps have run away with the idea that its' ALL "pork". Having looked at the specifics, I'm inclined to say that most of the proposed expenditures (but not all) are good ideas.

Fine, strip ALL the pork like $246 mill for Hollywood (like they're hurting for cash) and the Lead paint (call China) and make this a REAL Stimulus Package.
