MPs' fury as U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy gets honorary knighthood for Northern Ireland role

Gordon Brown sparked fury today by awarding an honorary knighthood to U.S. senator Edward Kennedy, who has been accused in the past of being an IRA sympathiser.

Conservative MPs and Peers condemned as 'inappropriate' the decision to make a man closely linked to the Irish nationalist movement a 'Sir'.

Senior British politicians also expressed unease at honouring the Democrat who was embroiled in controversy when he was involved in an infamous car accident on Chappaquiddick Island in 1969 in which a young woman was killed.

The Queen agreed to knight the 77-year-old - brother of assassinated U.S. president John F. Kennedy - for 'services to the British-American relationship and to Northern Ireland'.

The Prime Minister formally announced the award during his address to both houses of Congress in Washington.

Mr Kennedy, the most senior member of the famous Irish-American political dynasty, was a powerful figure in the Ulster peace process because it was felt he had some influence over the province's Catholic community.

I must say, that's quite an impressive achievement for a U.S. Senator.

Guess he's gotten away with murder in 2 countries now!

Nice, as in Ted Rall nice, or as in Keith Olbermann nice ?

The only reason I don't want him dying is for all the phony praise we'll have to hear heaped on his very ample grave.

Like him or not, Senator Kennedy has served the country powerfully in his position through many administrations, and has made lasting contributions to the general welfare of Americans. Discussions about his health, whether intended as dark humor or even outright disdain, are distasteful and juvenile. If he made mistakes 40 years ago so be it. He's more than paid any debt back.

Actually it's very straight forward, but for someone who thinks "The is not object in your sentence" is a properly formed sentence, I can see how a simple statement may be confusing to you.

Pleased at the subject of the thread, obviously, taking things in context may be beyond you, I'm sorry for making assumptions about your intellectual ability.

Ok, how about you answer your own four questions from earlier? They're presumably simple enough for you to understand, or are you afraid to let us see your answers?

I'm not afraid, would just rather focus on one before dealing w/ other issues.

Why would you presume I'm afraid of answering just ONE?

I'd ask another, but you'd pull a childish trick of saying YOU'LL only answer 1. Again, not into the wasting time thing w/ you.

It's not a presumption. It's a fact. You won't answer the questions, you'll just twist and turn and scream and snarl, proving you're afraid. Your behaviour is that of a fearful cornered animal.

Thank you for proving me right.

Tell what to her family? He didn't kill her. The degree to which he tried to save her is known only to him. It was an accident, they happen all the time. I've been around a good while during his many years in the Senate, and I have not been "harmed" by him in any noticeable way. It's just simple manners to show him repect, if only as a gesture of basic civility. Otherwise, the Ted Ralls of the world become the norm, instead of the sick freaks they are.

Jong, why are you buying the Hallmark card version of that tragic event ?

Kennedy was drunk, driving w/ a woman, not his wife, when the accident occurred. He left her in the car, and then didn't report the accident until he had time to sleep the alcohol off, lawyer up and find a neck brace to gen up some sympathy. Some 19 hours ? I can't recall for certain. But the point is clear. he got off scot free, and never once lost a nights sleep over the death of Mary Jo.
