I just found out about this because I haven't watched Letterman since the 90's.

Utterly disgusting. Not only has Letterman sunk to a new low, he should be taken off the air for this travesty.
Way to go Letterman. If talking about a 14 year old girl getting "knocked up" turns your screw then I guess it's time for you to retire.

Hmm. Pretty tasteless, though I don't think he meant anything about the 14 year old. But either way, yeah, that wasn't the classiest joke that could have been made.

Really that whole situation is just kinda... sad.

Yeah, I remember. It was a mistake of the media then. Maybe Letterman's writers should have made it a little more clear also. Every news channel around has been misinformed. That's what I get for trusting the news.

I stand corrected.

I happened to catch Letterman the other night for the first time in years. Four of his top 10 list were slaps at conservatives and immediately after, to the delight of the audience, he brought out Paris Hilton. Somehow that seemed to say it all about Letterman and his fans.

Obviously his writers should have been more clear. Or left the joke out completely. But kudos to you for standing up for free speech. Oh, wait - you didn't. You said he should be taken off the air for this.

Here's Letterman's response:

Quote:

"I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl. I mean, look at my record. It has never happened. I don't think it's funny. I would never think it was funny. I wouldn't put it in a joke."

And, Dave being Dave, he added: "Governor Palin, if you're watching, I would like you to consider coming to New York City - you and Todd as my guests, or leave Todd at home."

"All right, so there, I hope I've cleared part of this up. Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was OK for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No."

I think maybe it says something about you and others who make the leap to ASSUMING Letterman was talking about sex with a 14-year-old girl. To me, the connection is pretty clear: Palin has a daughter who's already been knocked up.

And bear in mind that her outrage and indignation are completely phony. Remember, this is the woman who signed off on billing rape victims for gathering evidence against their rapists. She never seemed very concerned about rape or underage sex before; it looks like she's desperate for something to keep her in the public eye. Apparently her appearance at the latest GOP fundraiser didn't go very well, since they didn't let her speak. Lucky them.

Yeah, I was misinformed by the media. They are still spinning this thing as though Letterman was talking about Palin's 14 year old daughter.

Letterman can say whatever he wants. If he had indeed been talking about the younger daughter, then I feel he should have faced some consequences.
I'm all for freedom of speech, but Sometimes a boneheaded comment can cost you your job. Remember the Imus incident? You can say what you want in America, but you have to expect to pay for your words if they offend anyone.

Although I have been corrected on this matter I am not in the wrong for starting this thread.

I simply stated what I had witnessed on the news channels(including FOX news). They said Letterman's remark was aimed at a 14 year old girl. That's what I responded to. I didn't assume anything other than what the news channels were giving me.

Letterman was cracking off at Palin who attended a ball game in NY with her 14 year old daughter. Letterman made his wisecrack about the daughter with her, hence the 14 year old was the target, if you interpret his comments as said.

He shouldn't have used the joke at all, as it was in poor taste. Whoever wrote the joke for him, should have checked to see who was with her.

Truth is, Letterman has fallen a long way, and he needs to appeal to someone to get his ratings up, so he takes pot shots at someone like Palin to do it, since most of his followers are Palin haters.

Palin herself is a public figure, and that means she's fair game. It just goes with the territory. But it's shameful that so many have fallen so far to include children.

But that's just me.

Letterman, my fellow Americans, is a comedy-late-night-host. This is a man who makes fun of celebrities, the rich and powerful, politicians, sports figures, even other TV hosts; hell, he even makes fun of himself.

How can anyone take what he says seriously. Okay, he told a crude joke that was blown out of proportion by Fox News and other media outlets. Letterman is known for his often crude humor and sometimes he goes too far. But that's his job, to push the envelope.

I remember listening to Howard Stern on the radio one day and he made an off-color remark about Puerto Ricans. It was stupid, crude and juvenile - Howard Stern's shtick. He said that whoever did not like his brand of humor should change the channel. He did not apologize. Was he an A-No.1 A-hole, YES! But he's raking in millions doing his thing. Does it make it right? NO!

But there you are. I don't condone Letterman's remark because I have nieces, sisters and my mom.
The only difference is my family members are not in the spotlight. Here's the thing though, I don't care. I rarely watch his show, and when he says something dumb I say "Well, that's Dave" and move on. BTW this is giving him a boost in the ratings because people are talking about it.

He's laughing all the way to the bank.

I'm just saying.

I'll be a little nit-picky here, Kwicko. I was curious about this comment since I hadn't heard about it, so I did a little checking.

Here's the comments from Factcheck.org:

Myself, I would like for Palin to go on the record about this if only to clear things up. Silence, as Rue says, points out a lot about people.

At any rate, I don't think this is such a terribly big deal. I didn't realize she was at the game with her 14 yr old daughter so the joke made sense, but it was in bad taste no matter how you look at it. Whether or not we should just shrug it off and say that's his job is questionable because that seems to be the way of the world anymore. Comedians are always looking for ways to push the envelope and sometimes the only way to do that is to push further and further into the areas of bad taste.

The Left's never-ending personal attacks on Palin only show just how terrified they truly are of her. I love how the feminists don't say squat. Fucking ideological hypocrites the lot of them. Palin's main reason for being in NY was to walk in a charity event for sick kids, and Letterman saw an opportunity to once again attack her family, this time with a vile rape joke. A rape joke about a 14-year old girl he now denies, saying he meant an 18-year old, as if that changes anything. I'm sure all 18-year old girls out there would consider being raped by ARod a real hoot. Not to mention the characterization of Palin as " a slutty flight attendant." I'm sure all flight attendants think of themselves that way too.

I just watched Letterman's apology on Huffingtonpost.com (just to avoid any claims of partisanship, mind you ). And I'll say this:
#1 - Letterman vehemently states that he'd never imply such a thing about a 14 yr. old girl. The problem is that in context Palin was at the game with her 14 yr. old daughter, so yes, the implication was there. Maybe not intentional, but it was there.
#2 - He seems to shrug most of it off on the trials and tribulations of having a talk show. Boo-hoo. First, let me say, I was a huge fan of Letterman in the 80's and 90's. I watched him nightly. I stopped for some reason, but I do think he's a funny guy. But really. He and his writers couldn't come up with ANYTHING else to make a joke about? Knowing the joke was in bad taste (to which he openly admits)?
#3 - Despite the furor his jokes made the first time, he repeats them. For a cheap laugh. Much to the enjoyment of the audience who laugh and clap at them . . . again.

So, really, I don't think the apology was 100% authentic.

Haha....

Remember when the media bashed Bush for a bunch of trivial things when he was president (when there was plenty of legitimate shit that somebody should have Woodward and Bernsteined.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodward_and_Bernstein#Investigation

Now look at them bash the liberals with Obama as president and because he's black they're still all afraid to make a crack at him personally. (Christ, when will somebody put my man Martin Lawrence on Late Night so we can make jokes about the man without being KKK members?)

Funny though, when the pendulum swings the other way, isn't it?

Especially when it's fixed and 90% of the idiots here and abroad really believe that there are only two teams to play for when the best they can do is "vote the lesser of two evils" and the worst they can do is vote in the new guy hoping for change only to cry when it's more of the same, with a more positive spin.

You mean you don't want cradle-to-grave entitlements for everyone at the expense of working folks?
You mean you don't want the Govt. mandating what you eat and drink by taxing what "they" consider in-appropriate?
You mean you don't want the Govt. deciding what cars to make?
You mean you don't want your own healthcare benefits taxed so 13 million illegals can have healthcare?
And you don't want the Govt telling you what healthcare you can or cannot have, and then handing you a waiting list number slip?
You mean you don't want your taxes raised to pay for social programs for every pathetic lazy miscreant loser with a beef about something?
You mean you don't want the Govt. all up inside your ass like Obama is hell bent on doing?
And finally, you don't want captured terrorists being given Miranda rights overseas, like Obama said on 60 Minutes he'd never do, but has now indeed ordered?
Sorry, too late.

Strangely enough, and this is a desire I can't really reconcile with my distrust of the American government, I actually kind of want England's health care system. I've only heard one out of maybe twenty people complain about it.

Of course, I strongly suspect that it just isn't going to work here in America. Any time either party tries to introduce an idea that would improve the quality of life within our borders, it's either shouted down or muddled so much, bogged down with loopholes, pork barrel, and sabotage that the resulting bills are worthless. Clearly the insurance companies, pharamceuticals, and HMOs are ripping us off, but expecting the GOVERNMENT to fix it? Ha.

I also have the impression that the English have different perspectives and priorities on privacy issues... So even though THEY like it, a similar system may feel invasive to many Americans. Just can't win.

Yeah its a huge leap. I mean Palin comes to town with ONLY the 14 year old, and takes her to the ballgame, then Letterman jokes about Palin taking her daughter to the ballgame and the daughter getting sexually assaulted...I agree he MUST have been talking about Bristol, who was not even with Gov Palin at the game of in New York.

Please. Its no leap. I'm certain what happened is the writers did not check and accidently got the daughters confused.

Because its ok to make fun of an 18 year-old getting sexually assaulted. After all...he was only telling a joke...about a girl being sexually assaulted in a public place in front of her mother by an older man and we all know thats pretty funny. And Letterman is nothing if not fair...I'm sure tonight he'll have something funny about Sasha and Malia Obama getting pregenant.

Did Alex Rodriguez rape someone recently or something? If Letterman was most likely talking about the 18-year-old, as all of you seem to agree, where's this "sexual assault" business coming from?

Like I said, this joke was tasteless, and he shouldn't have made it, and it was an unfair attack out of left field on the private life of Sarah Palin's daughter.

But David Letterman is a comedian, he talks shit out of his mouth most of the time. This isn't news, it's a footnote in the show business section. Why's everyone up in arms?

No one is debating the actual quote, Rue. I believe it's about the taste in which the joke was told if you take it in context. Palin was at the game with her 14 year old daughter. So, in context, Letterman is implying (again, purposefully or not) that A-Rod knocked up Willow, not Bristol. That's a little bit in bad taste, dontchathink? But seeing as how most people only think of Bristol as being promiscuous, that's how the writer's thought it would be taken . . . except they didn't think that Sarah Palin might get a little upset about it because it was her 14 yr. old daughter with her at the game. I think her anger is justified a little bit.

*EDIT* I don't see a rape implied, just for the record. Just sexual promiscuity (no idea really how to spell that )

Where was the outrage at Rush's vacuum & screaming sound effects when he discussed abortion?
I didn't hear any from ME, so why the furor over this particular piece of bad taste from YOU?
How does it really have an effect on the landscape when an idiot blurts out nonsense?
Better look to your inner kneejerk righty, dude.

OK...how about your 14 year-old daughter getting knocked up by A Rod. Pretty funny huh? It implies forcible sex or consentual sex that 14 year olds cannot give, aka rape. You're fine either way I'm sure.

Jongsstraw... it's okay NOT to pick up the "right-wing delusional" mantle from rappy. Let it lay. You're better than that.

We should have strapped him into a glider, filled it nose heavy w/ explosives, and dropped his Allah lovin' ass into a large, empty field. After which, release wild boars into the area so they could make good use of his remains. Now THAT's justice.- rappy

Yeah, that's what Sheikh Issa said. Seems you both have a lot in common.- signy

I don't understand. What's right wing? What's delusional? I used to fight with Rappy all the time on many issues including torture, gay rights, Republican self-destruction, Bush/Cheney failures, etc etc. No one cares about that. They just want a piece of my ass. You guys are the ones that atttempt to define by presumption.

m'kay Jongssy- scratch the "right-wing" part and just apply "delusional". For whatever reason, you've been on a vicious streak lately. Don't need to be.

Maybe just reached the boiling point due to the non-stop vile bashing of Palin for 10 months by Letterman and others. In another time I would not have gotten so upset.

Partisan indignation, man. Just say Letterman was an idiot & leave it at that. To purposely read more into it than there was is where the "right" thing comes in. Would you have gotten your dander up as much over the same joke made of Chelsea Clinton when she was 18? Oh, but Chelsea's Mom didn't preach abstinence & have a daughter actively proving she had no real handle on the concept, so that's why this blows all out of proportion for ya, eh?
Okay, I get it.
Rant on.

Willow is 14, it is rape.

Bristol is 18, it is rape if she does not consent. The comment did not express or imply consent. The comment is express in limiting affirmative behaivor to A-Rod.

Are you KIDDING???? No human in existence deserves MORE bashing than that silly ass who almost had a shot at being the leader of the free world!!!
As much as I disliked Cheney, Palin would have had an opportunity to END our world in a blaze of righteous God-approved nuc-u-lar Revelation!!!

Just sayin'.

This rises to the same level or even worse then what Imus said that got him canned.

I demand he be fired...I also demand he give me a million dollars...if only my demands had any real power...(sigh)...well, I plan to demand a $5 foot long from Subway for dinner, so at least someone will listen to me, although if she gives me green pepper instead of bananna peppers somebody is gonna pay!

So her family becomes fair game too? Nice!

In case you haven't noticed, between Obama's gaffes and Biden's daily blunders, Palin is starting to look like Einstein.

I object!
Limited affirmation does not specifically & exclusively restrict said consensual behavior to A-Rod!
