But that's only 'cause not many Folk are out doing the work...

Happily , the Browncoats are !

This photo was taken over this weekend just past , by the Independent Spaceborne sponsor , JP Aerospace .

This mission was designated Away 38 , and it marks the 100th such foray to 'the raggedy edge' for the group .

The flight launched from Black Rock dry lake in Nevada , and went to an altitude of 99,340 feet MSL .

Pyramid Lake , Nevada is at the lower right center of the photo .

The vid from the mission is complete , was just posted to YouTube this past weekend :

There's a nifty roll and spin when the balloon-bursting command is uplinked , then lots of shredded latex...'Raggedy edge' , indeed !

Really pretty pictures on descent , too...

Is 99,000 feet really "space"?

If so, is a Lockheed F-104 Starfighter now considered a "spaceship", since it's gone as high as 100,000 feet?

Might I ask how much money they made off this flight?

But they didn't make any money? Volunteers only.

At least they didn't steal our money at gunpoint to do it. Then fake it.

What about FFF.net?

"Edge of space." Space starts at 250,000 feet.

How does a space balloon get into orbit at 18,000 mph? 140,000 feet altitude with passengers in Dark Sky Station airship with propellers 2-miles long.

1-mile long robot airship then uses ion drive to reach 18,000 mph. No re-entry burn or parachutes required.

Or solar power to fly across the Solar System.

Funded by the Pentagon to spy on sheeple for the NWO.

Clever, but creepy.

There's actually not a long-standing agreement about where space begins , because the atmosphere is tenuous and continues to dissipate with altitude...

However , when one is in the neighborhood of 100,000 feet , and the air is only 1% the density of air at sea level , more than 99% of the atmosphere is BELOW you...

So , it's pretty cold outside , and pretty impossible to have any period of useful consciousness...and one's blood would boil due to gases coming out of solution...

So , for all practical intents , a 'space' environment , despite not being quite a 'hard vacuum' .

Close enough for gummint work...

No , of course not :

While the F-104 was known as the ' Missile with a Man in it ' , it wasn't really a spaceship...

The (N)F-104A would be more close to what you have in mind , 'cause it's a much more 'rockety' ride :

The German Luftwaffe used to buzz our USAF base in Germany using F104s during wargames.
Below 100 feet altitude just below the speed of sound. Scared the crap out of us. Awesome!
Brits used Tornados.

Yes, I was incorrect. The NASA definition for "astronaut" is 50 miles altitude, which is 264,000 feet.
Only X15 pilots qualified, so far as the public knows.

X15 space photos are still classified

Ever hear about the time Neil Armstrong came near to buzzing LAX and Inglewood with the X-15 ?

It's an interesting story :
