Yup, ya gotta love those "conservatives" and their "traditional family values". Guy was at an anti-President hate rally holding up the cutest little sign:

"Death to Obama and death to Michelle and her two stupid kids!"

But, ya know, it's NOT about them being black or anything. Especially the kids. It's just about their political views.

Right?

Y'know, I bet you're right! After all, I've only seen disappointed left-wingers shouting down the town hall meetings so far, so it's almost certain that this guy was an Obama supporter...

So, Ripper, it's been 5 years now - where's the REST of that story? What happened to that guy? Was he fired? Arrested? Detained? Shipped to Gitmo? Disappeared? Where is he now?

To be fair, Kwicko, I don't think anyone could produce the information you're asking for, and that doesn't necessarily mean he was sent to Gitmo.

Let's just say, crazy as that guy is, I hope he didn't do anything stupid. Just like these other people.

I have very serious doubts that standing around a town hall, armed and shouting is how we're going to change anything... Especially when every aspect of all of this is rigged.

Wulfie, you may not have heard, but the Secret Service takes all threats to the life of the President and his family very seriously. Do you have the "right" to say such things? Sure you do - exactly as much "right" as you have to yell "Fire!" in a crowded theatre.

Double-check with "Hero" - they'll probably even take this yahoo's guns away.

Sorry, but when the douchebag protester is outside a Democrat's town hall meeting with a sign calling for the deaths of not only Obama, but of his wife and kids as well, then no, I don't think there's a chance that he's a liberal disappointed with Obama's work so far. I think he's a racist asshole piece of shit who wants the Obamas killed for the crime of being black in "his" America.

BDN: You know something? I've never once - not one single time - seen you call out any of your hard-right brethren on their gross generalizations. When 'Rappy would pop off something like "all liberals are evil", or when "Hero" drops his usual "Of course he'll raise taxes - he's a Democrat" riffs, you've never once accused them of being overly biased.

Why is that, do you think? Is it because you think ALL "liberals" are that way? Do you lump them all in together? One liberal does something, so you smear the whole left side of the political spectrum?

I mean, if you want others to be unbiased and fair, shouldn't you be willing to make the same efforts? Shouldn't you point it out when it's done on EITHER side of an issue?

Or are you just arguing with me because it's ME? Are you really that small and petty?

Yeah, I thought so...

No, Mike I was actually being a moron. Or "Moran," technically. Yeah, sure I know the language, but I made the error, and soon as I saw it, it was way too late to correct.

I have a theory about education though: It's a euphemism for programming. Notice that television doesn't use euphemisms, they just call it "programming."

Also, the time spent out of school gathers more information per hour than time spent in school, When I have kids, I'm going to skip public school. Maybe school in India, where they teach kids logic exercises, etc. More useful than the information.

In one of the few years of school I attended, I think it was 4th grade, my science teacher taught me that the world had four poles: North, South, East and West. He said "If you keep going East, you'll find you're going west again." I said "only because you got homesick and turned around."

This sort of thing was far from unique. I remember that in first grade, first day, Ms. Sisson told us we all had to learn to multiply. she quizzed the class, and as I already, I had to demonstrate multiplication and the logic behind it, and make a little graph on the blackboard showing how you could count to see that it was in fact so that 5 rows of 5 apples each were in fact 25 apples.

I was somewhat distressed in fifth grade to find that now we were going to learn our "times tables." It seemed to be a similar principle, only without any underlying logic or proof.

Recently I heard a college student refer to "when we first learned our times tables in the 8th grade..." But then I used to tutor college kids who couldn't add 5+5.

Errors become easier to make when you rely on the live spell check that the linux firefox has. The hitch is that it wants to spell everything british. The only words in this post it doesn't like are "linux," "firefox," and "british." It wants two of those capitalized, but the middle one it would like to replace with "firebox."

MS Word last I checked was still telling people to replace "internet" with "internment."

Meanwhile, my mouse needs recharging, and so I'm using the touchpad, which is slightly annoying (and also apparently not a word, should be "touchpaper": a fuse of dark blue paper on a firework.)

Never too late. Go back and edit it, and put something like "ETA: fixed unfortunate syntax error."

And yes, it's NOT one of those things that most checkers will catch, because "your" is an actual word, and it's spelled correctly. So are "yore" and "you're", "there", "their", and "they're", and so on.

Regardless, your posts are still entertaining and informative, so keep up the good work.

Okay, I gotta refer to something (obliquely) that I said I wouldn't refer to again. Some of you know what I mean.

I'm sooo impressed with this place and the people in it. I was blathering away to my Jim about it yesterday for ages, and he just sat there with a knowing smile and said "I'm glad you found such a great place".

The point is this: I've been warned about the RWE forum, that it got heated. Okay, so I've onl seen a little in a couple of days. But I have to say that what I've seen thus far is wonderful. I've seen reasoned debate, I've seen slimes and arguments, but I've not yet seen TRUE rancor such as what I saw elsewhere, and I've seen a sense of camraderie in that people keep their senses of humor, even if that's not what they're getting back.

What I'm saying is no, so far what I've seen hasn't come CLOSE to the I experienced and spoke of.

The next most important thing to me is there seems to be a relative balance of both sides (or more), not one side shouting down the other consistently with nothing but epithets. The other thing I'm really impressed by is the INTELLIGENCE with which the arguments are made, presenting facts and filling out their points with at least semi-reasoned opinions. I'm, well, on

I think part of that comes from the fact that here, unlike many boards, someone with a serious agenda and no respect for the truth can't go hiding under the skirts of an agenda-friendly moderator.

Here, you HAVE to make your argument, and if you can't, if you won't - no one is gonna give you the time of day about it, even and especially if all you got to back it up with is just verbal garbage chuckin.

That said, there's times it does go into some seriously blistering verbiage, and if I have "no intent to be reasonable about this" or am "not going to be polite".... duck.

At least I have the decency to warn folk first tho, you gotta give me that one.

Niki, it has been rather friendly lately. A few posters who I've noted to be logically challenged and into little more than insult-slinging don't seem to be around. It used to be that no RWED thread could get to 20 posts without turning to: "Liar! Liar! I know you are, but what am I?" etc. I got tired of it. I think everyone did, which maybe is why folks are now taking care to be civil. It's nice.

Anyhoo, back on topic. Sort of. Is it just me, but is there a refreshing lack of "Free Spreech Zones" happening? I mean, no matter how many nutjobs get out there and shout the real debate down, I'm pretty happy that I'm able to see them.

Those "1st Amendmend Zones" (God, I wish I was making that term up!), were used by both parties, though Bush went further with it when he let his supporters come out, his detractors stay put. Limiting "Free Speech" to a small place where no will see it is a joke. A bad one. It's about as anti-Constitution as you can get. No matter what Obama's screwed up, thank goodness he's not continuing that madness!

It was actually quite ugly back in February when I came to the site. It has lightened considerably as long as, like we all have said, we all keep our heads and senses of humor. Some on both sides of the issues tend to lose one or both from time to time, but that's to be expected depending on how passionate one is about the subject. Some (*side glances at Kwicko*) like to see the angry people get angrier and stirs the pot on purpose Like I said before, we're all here for the same reason even though we all have different backgrounds and political beliefs. But there are many things many of us still have in common aside from what's going on in Washington DC. As long as we remember that and get along when we AREN'T talking politics, then I strongly feel that we all can still remain friendly.

All of this, of course, does not mean that it WON'T get nasty again in here. When it gets that way, I try to back off until things calm down again Not always successful, but I try.

Wikipedia is a good starting place:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_speech_zone

Of particular interest is a picture halfway down the page. It's a sign which says: "First Amendment Area: This area has been set aside for individuals or groups exercising their constitutional first amendment rights. "

The obvious implication: the first amendment does not apply outside this zone.

Again - how in the hell is this allowed to happen? It makes my blood boil!

And this: "These [Free Speech] zones routinely succeed in keeping protesters out of presidential sight and outside the view of media covering the event. When Bush came to the Pittsburgh area on Labor Day 2002, 65-year-old retired steel worker Bill Neel was there to greet him with a sign proclaiming, 'The Bush family must surely love the poor, they made so many of us.' The local police, at the Secret Service's behest, set up a 'designated free-speech zone' on a baseball field surrounded by a chain-link fence a third of a mile from the location of Bush's speech. The police cleared the path of the motorcade of all critical signs, though folks with pro-Bush signs were permitted to line the president's path. Neel refused to go to the designated area and was arrested for disorderly conduct."

Arrested for carrying a harmless nonviolent sign. Really. And I *know* that posters here were saying, just a few years back, that folks like Neel should shut up or leave this country. And now the same folks are defending the loonies with guns.

*head spins*

ETA: Note the use of "disorderly conduct". Kind of a theme lately, huh?

I supported the Dixie Chicks, though I wasn't on this board at that time. I was also aware of free-speech zones, though I hadn't heard particular stories like Neel's. However, I would not have told him to leave the country. This is all partially because I did not support the Iraq War, but also because I saw them as issues of free speech.

I'm supporting the anti-healthcare protestors even if I disagree with what they say, even if many of them have no real idea what they're protesting.

The people with the guns... I don't see guns necessarily as an automatic threat. That sign about watering the tree of liberty might be construed as a threat... Here's a question. If Obama hadn't been at that rally, would that guy be perceived as having been making threats?

Maybe that's irrelevant, because Obama WAS at that rally. But I see it two ways, I see it EITHER that he was just trying to make a point about the public being ready and willing to correct the errors of government, OR he was making a threat against Obama.

Maybe a better question, and a better way to define whether the guy was in fact a physical threat is if the guy ever intended to open fire. Apparently the Secret Service didn't think so, and I kind of don't really think so either, because that would be even MORE stupid than actually bringing the gun in the first place. I guess I have trouble imagining someone being THAT dumb.

Maybe the "Death to Mr Soetoro" guy is a salaried police provocateur, like radio host Hal Turner?

Turner is now under arrest for doing exactly what FBI paid him to do:
www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D9A5GCC80&show_article=1

This seems to be very common for FBI to arrest their own informants as patsies. That's why Emad Salem secretly made 100 hoursa of phone tapes of his FBI handlers ordering him to bomb World Trade Center in 1993, then FBI paid Salem $1.5-million as its star witness with immunity from prosecution.

Oh hell, Ripper - no need for any side glances on that one! I make no secret of the fact that I *LOVE* blasting large holes in arguments and hypotheticals, especially when they come from the right side of the aisle. I try to be pretty up-front about that. And yes, it cerainly can be fun to poke the hornets' nest.

What I find particularly funny is how little time it takes to get some of them so worked up and in a lather over things, even though they KNOW that I'm goading them into doing it, that they actually start making things up and claiming things that never, ever happened, thereby flushing down the shitter any semblence of credibility they might otherwise have laid claim to.

Downright high-larious, it is.

I suport the anti-health-care protesters. What I DON'T support is them taking away the right to speak from others, by shouting down and disrupting proceedings. At that point, they're the real-world equivalent of trolls.

And in more of the "scarier and scarier" traditional American values news...

I was listening to the radio today, and they played a tape of a caller who said that we'd better by-god listen to them when they expressed their first amendment rights to free speech, because if we didn't listen to them, they'd introduce us to their second amendment rights. And then she finished with - and I quote - "Stop the violence!"

So... Let us talk as loudly as we want, and if you don't, we'll shoot you. Oh, and stop the violence, or we'll kill you.

Awesome.

America is just the best. Any brain-dead hick can get up there and, with a complete lack of the sense of irony needed for saying such things, demand that we stop the violence before they shoot us, and we'd better listen to them and not talk back... or they'll shoot us.

Gawd, I love this fuckin' country. And this country sure seems to love fuckin' me.

Mike

Yes Sig,

I did some research....

"Sigyn (Old Norse "victorious girl-friend"[1]) is a goddess and wife of Loki in Norse mythology. Sigyn is attested in the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson. In the Poetic Edda, little information is provided about Sigyn other than her role in assisting Loki during his captivity. In the Prose Edda, her role in helping her husband through his time spent in bondage is stated again, she appears in various kennings, and her status as a goddess is twice stated. Sigyn may appear on the Gosforth Cross and has been the subject of an amount of theory and cultural references."

So, are you here to help? Or just cause trouble and disharmony?

That would almost make sense if SignyM's screen name were Sigyn.

Is your dyslexia acting up again, Wulfie?

Spelled wrong, I point out. I'm not sure that's the reference she was making.

But I don't recall any legends involving Sigyn being particularly mischievous, like Loki. The legend I recall, in fact, is that when her husband was imprisoned for tricking one of the Gods into accidentally killing the beloved God of Light, Loki was tied onto a platform, deep under the earth, above which were some snakes or something that dripped acidic corrosive poison on Loki's face. Sigyn dutifully stayed by Loki's side, trying in vain to catch all the drops of poison in a small bowl she had.
