Aim to Misbehave

Hello My Browncoat Friends,

Tragedy has sadly again befallen the family of one of our own. Shelley Hachman (you may know her as Dawnsister) has lost her sister; a thirty four year old single mother of two young children with no life insurance, this past Wednesday, August 26th. A Memorial Fund has been set up to help with the funeral costs, to help get grief counseling for her children and to help her children in their future. If you have the ability to donate, please consider it.

Shelley has done so much for the Browncoats. She is instrumental in putting together the pre-Serenity Now/Equality Now messages you see each year on the big screen, she helps run the charity event each year and gets involved in everything she can, Browncoat or otherwise. She is a mover and a shaker in the Browncoat community as well as other charities and completely involved with her own wonderful family of five...but even movers and shakers get overwhelmed and now's our time to help her and her family if we can.

Following is all the information as it became available. Please help if you can:

Shelley's Facebook 8/27: Kristen Belair, my sister 10/15/76 - 8/26/09 I love you. "Bless you, my darling, and remember you are always in the heart - oh tucked so close there is no chance of escape - of your sister."

Shelley's Facebook 8/28: Kristen. A Memorial celebration of my sister's life will be held 3-5 PM on Sunday the 30th at Iron Bridge Baptist Church, 10900 Iron Bridge Road (Rte 10), Chesterfield, VA.

In the local NC news 8/28: A memorial fund has been set up for the children of the woman killed in an accident on the side of I-40 earlier this week. Kristen Belair's mother says her daughter and two grandchildren were driving from Richmond, VA, to meet friends at Topsail Beach when Kristen stopped to fix a flat tire near Burgaw Wednesday. Troopers say the blade of a bulldozer on the back of a truck hit and killed the 32-year-old single mom as her children watched.

Sandy Belair says her daughter did not have life insurance. You can contribute to the Kristen Belair Memorial Fund at any Carolina First Bank branch or by contacting Steve Allen at (828) 577-0665 or sjallen14@msn.com.

To our local New England Browncoat list and to other friends 8/29 from Kristen's father:

I am Keith Belair, Kristen's dad. Steve forwarded your email to me. The outpouring of heartfelt sympathy for this tragedy is almost overwhelming. I have set up a PayPal account to receive donations from anyone wishing to do so. The account is kristenbelairtrust@hotmail.com

Please extend our thanks to everyone for their condolences. She was a wonderful, free spirited, dynamic young woman and she will be sorely missed by all of her friends and family.

Thank you again,
Keith Belair

From the lawyer in charge of the Trust for Kristen's children:

I'm at the epicenter of a phenomenon of social networking that, at 48, I've never experienced. I'm asking all these folks to whom I'm replying to tell me something about how they knew or knew of Kristen. I would appreciate your taking the time to do so.

Also from Whedonesque (posted today)

Hi Everyone - this is Kristen's sister. Whedonite37 here, but Dawnsister everywhere else. My family could NEVER EVER express our full gratitude to the Browncoat family. I woke up this morning to find on my FB page that Kris's information had been posted out to the OB and here. My first thought was "Oh,that poor lawyer". I made a call to Mr. Allen and spent a good 20 minutes on the phone with him. He has been recieving phone calls and emails from all over as to how to contribute to the fund for my niece and nephew, and the paypal acct has now been setup to help accomadate people.
- I believe Mr. Allen's first question to me was "What is a Browncoat?". :0) I think he now has the first episode down pat, and I will be sending him his own copy of Firefly and Serenity as a thank you.

There is much here that I could go on about - but I guess mostly I want you to know that this fund will help my niece and nephew with the immediate and necessary care for their wellbeing. First and foremost is grief counseling, these children were witness to a horrific accident and saw everything, and they are only beginning to process the information.
Even though the funeral isn't until Monday, counseling has already started for them. Secondly, the monies will be for their college education.

My sister, Kristen, was a young woman, and my baby sister. As a single parent she could never rely on her ex for much but she always made do with what she could for her and her the kids who are 10 and 8. She loved her children more than anything - they were her first and last thoughts in each day.

Kris was one of the most vibrant ppl I have ever known - she regularly danced her way thru the day, wearing twirly skirts and no shoes. She had this wonderful short tinkling/cascading type laugh that I've never heard from anyone else, and I just can't believe I will never hear it again.

About a month ago my mom was sick, and she and Kristen had had a conversation about 'last wishes'. Kris had told her that she never wanted a viewing or anything to do with a funeral home. She thought they were morbid and depressing and her life wasn't about that. She felt her life was about love, laughter and joy. So, we will be having a 'Celebration of Her Life' on sunday with a graveside service on monday. Again, it will never be enough but I want to express my heartfelt thank you to the Browncoat family and all the support and love they have given to us these past few days.

Love keeps her in the air
Shelley

Alas, I did not know the lady, and she certainly sounded worth knowing - I myself lost my mother far too early in a tragic fashion, and so will pass this info on to friends and associates as well.

We grieve not only for her loss, but also for our own, deprived of her pleasant company.

We take care of our own.

Get a good personal injury lawyer, and the kids should be okay. Unless the trucker was indigent and not employed by a trucking company, or was never located. Trucks do have a habit of causing crashes and not stopping, but concerned drivers often follow them to get their tag #.

Oh man, that is... How're the kids? I mean obviously not great, but that's unbelievable. *shake head*

There are a lot of trucks and vehicles out on the highways with unsafe projections and loads. I'd fault the trucking company here for not checking the vehicles to meet with safety regulations.

I wish all the best for her family.

The funeral is tommorrow, the kids are already in grief therapy. They have lovig, caring family and friends around them but they did see it all as it happened and will be most definitely tramatized.

With any accident such as this, there is investigations from many parties (trucking corporate, insurance, police) and that is going on currently.

Thank you all for your well wishes. Please keep Shelley, her niece and nephew, mother and brother and whole family in your thoughts.

As Shelley quoted,

This hit really close to home , and I was heartbroken about it when I read the first reports in the news...Gonna hurt a long while over this...

Sorry that I haven't been on sooner to express my grief and condolences...I lost a sister when I was ten , she was only 17 , and the circumstances were similarly tragic...

Part of the delay is also due to anger , since early reports quoted the driver as saying he could not move over to the left lane... It's a no-brainer to a pro driver , if one must hit something , it should be another vehicle rather than a person...

Given that choice , I'd have certainly pushed a vehicle into the center median with my tractor-trailer , versus hitting an undefended human being...At least there'd have been good chances for survival for the occupants of that vehicle versus NO chance for a pedestrian...

I know that's no comfort ; that this cannot be undone with the now-present circumstances , but I wanted Folk hereabouts to think ahead on this , in case they're ever faced with that kind of hard choice...

In any case , I will pray for the well-being and consolation of these kids , and the healing of their psychic wounds , because I know it works ; have seen it work time and again , and that they can maintain the hope of seeing her again , actual and whole , on the flip side of this old 'verse , when the time is right for it...

Until then , I wish Love for all of you bereaved Folk , and real comfort from among the ranks of the Browncoats ,
such as they can find to offer...
