You know this is such old news that most of these craft are now retired and/or obsolete, right? I mean, this is "news" that's more than 20 or 30 years old now.

Still, the Ekranoplans (or "flarecraft") were pretty cool, if of limited usefulness.

By the way, that bottom one? I don't think it's going to work out. Dip one of those wingtips into the water, and things are going to get ugly right quick, and the things going to cartwheel and come apart.

Hello,

I think those wingtips are designed to go into the water?

And yes, this is very old news. The first Ekranoplan was probably the Spruce Goose. ;-)

They might be "designed" to go into the water, but if they do so at speed, it's really not going to end well.

I don't think that bottom "picture" is real, at any rate. I'd say that's a video game's version of one of these craft. Looking at the wings, either the outer section (outboard of the engines) needs to fold down, or it's more than just the tips that would be in the water - look at where the waterline would be on the fuselage, then extrapolate that out to the wings, and you'll see that probably the outermost half of the outer section of the wing would be in the water, which is going to make it hard to get the thing into ground effect mode because of the added water drag.

But maybe that's just me seeing things... At any rate, looks fake to me.

The wingtips on the Boeing Pelican serve two purposes : firstly , they're a hydrofoil that penetrates the water's surface and enable the craft to lift free of hydrodynamic suction , and secondly , they function as a winglet for capturing an air-cushion for the wing in surface-effect...

PhantomWorks is Boeing's black-projects division ; corresponding to LockMart's Skunk Works...

Meh, have it built by these guys instead.
http://www.griffonhoverwork.com/
You'll get it cheaper and it might actually WORK.

Some folks I was kinda affiliated with had a milspec light armored hover out in upstate NY at one time, I even got to try to drive it once...

You know, it's really, really hard to STOP something that heavy once you got it moving when you don't have any contact with the ground to add friction - I did pay for the fence though.

Neat stuff, just don't let me drive it, hehehehe.

Hello,

Was there a freak out story associated with this that I missed? I thought it was just a fun, "look at this plane" post?

I think he was being "ironical", Anthony. Y'know, given PN's long estrangement from the facts and truth, and all...
