Some Palestinians only get 20 litres of water a day, Amnesty says

Israel is denying Palestinians access to even the basic minimum of clean, safe water, Amnesty International says.

In a report, the human rights group says Israeli water restrictions discriminate against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

It says that in Gaza, Israel's blockade has brought the water and sewage system to "crisis point".

Israel says the report is flawed and the Palestinians get more water than was agreed under the 1990s peace deal.

'Basic need'

In the 112-page report, Amnesty says that on average Palestinian daily water consumption reaches 70 litres a day, compared with 300 litres for the Israelis.

Israel must end its discriminatory policies, immediately lift all the restrictions it imposes on Palestinians' access to water
Donatella Rovera
Amnesty International

It says that some Palestinians barely get 20 litres a day - the minimum recommended even in humanitarian emergencies.

Amnesty says that Israel denies West Bank Palestinians to dig wells, and has even destroyed cisterns and impounded water tankers.

At the same time, the report claims, Israeli settlers are enjoying swimming pools and green gardens.

In Gaza, Israel refuses access to many of the building materials needed to renovate the ailing water system, the document says.

It adds that Israel uses more than 80% of the water from the Mountain Aquifer - the main source of underground water in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.

"Water is a basic need and a right, but for many Palestinians obtaining even poor-quality, subsistence-level quantities of water has become a luxury that they can barely afford," Amnesty's Donatella Rovera said.

"Israel must end its discriminatory policies, immediately lift all the restrictions it imposes on Palestinians' access to water."

Ms Rovera also urged Israel to "take responsibility for addressing the problems it created by allowing Palestinians a fair share of the shared water resources".

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said the report was factually inaccurate, accusing the Palestinians of mismanaging water resources.

He also rejected the claim that Israel was preventing Palestinians from drilling for water.

The spokesman said Israel had approved 82 such projects but the Palestinians had only implemented 26 of them.

Old Feud Over Lebanese River Takes New Turn

QASMIYA, Lebanon — Israeli bombing has knocked out irrigation canals supplying Litani River water to more than 10,000 acres of farmland and 23 villages in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley, prompting accusations here that Israel is using its war against Hezbollah to lay claim to Lebanon's prime watersheds.

Heavy fighting and a series of targeted strikes on open water channels and underground water diversion pipes have suspended much of Lebanon's agricultural use of the Litani River along the coastal plain and in parts of the Bekaa Valley near Qaraoun Dam, said water engineers who have surveyed the south.

US-Israeli missile war games begin
Tests will assess Israel's Arrow missile defence system and three US systems [GALLO/GETTY]

The United States and Israel have begun more than two weeks of tests to simulate missile attacks on the only country in the Middle East to possess nuclear weapons.

According to the Yediot Aharonot newspaper on Wednesday, the Juniper Cobra drills will simulate the firing of long-range missiles against Israel and will include a live missile interception.

The 16-day defence drill involves 2,000 troops from the US European Command and the Israeli army. It will put the Israeli Arrow missile defence system and three US systems through their paces.

Testing the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence, the ship-based Aegis Ballistic Missile Defence System and Patriot anti-aircraft systems has required Washington to dispatch 17 warships to the region.

Monitoring from the Negev desert, the US-made Forward Based X-band Tactical radar - capable of detecting long-range missiles - will track the Arrow missile system while transmitting data to a US joint tactical ground station.

The war games come as Susan Rice, the US ambassador to the United Nations, called for an end to "anti-Israel vitriol" at the United Nations.

"Member states must once and for all replace anti-Israeli vitriol with recognition of Israel's legitimacy and right to exist in peace and security," she said at a conference in Jerusalem organised by Shimon Peres, the Israeli president .

She also stressed Washington's commitment to fighting extremism.

I think Israels conduct brings forward the questions about " Israel's legitimacy and right to exist "

I also think the United States trying to block any question of this or any criticism negates any efforts towards a peace process, and legitimizes attacks against the US itself.

Funny. I've long argued that we really SHOULD consider turning over a big chunk of far West Texas/southern New Mexico over to them as their new homeland, if they'd have it. It's desert, but that's never stopped the Palestinians from living anywhere before.

As a resident of New Mexico... sure, we've got the room. Be interesting to see the reaction such a plan would provoke.

But between the far right nutjobs and the rednecks... I wonder if that would just change up the scenery and cause a whole new fight.

Besides, who would have the water rights there ( I seem to remembers native problems with water rights in that area back to the 50's ) as well as natural gas rights...

In this region both the Jews and Muslims lie, almost everything is fake or just a wild accusation because one side hates the other so much

Its difficult to believe what either side says

BOYCOTT THE MIDDLE EAST

Pally-Wood

Do they know these are fakes or are they fooled? Do they tell the cameramen working for them and using their equipment that filming such staged scenes is unethical and unacceptable? And if they do, why do cameramen who have worked for them for years – Talal worked for Enderlin for over a decade when he took these rushes – continue to film these scenes. And how often do our journalists run this staged footage as real news?

Here the evidence provided by the Al Dura affair suggests that, in some sense, journalists are “in” on the public secret. When representatives of France2 were confronted with the pervasive evidence of staging in Talal’s footage, they both responded the same way. “Oh, they always do that, it’s a cultural thing,” said Enderlin to me in Jerusalem. “Yes Monsieur, but, you know, it’s always like that,” said Didier Eppelbaum to Denis Jeambar, Daniel Leconte, and Luc Rosenzweig in Paris.

As an echo of this astonishing private complacency, Clément Weill-Raynal of France3 made a comment to a journalist that he meant as a criticism of Karsenty: “Karsenty is so shocked that fake images were used and edited in Gaza, but this happens all the time everywhere on television and no TV journalist in the field or a film editor would be shocked.”

Fiction: Israel has cut off electricity to Gaza.
Fact: In the past, Hamas officials have committed deceptions such as pulling dark curtains in mid-day while holding a meeting to make it look as though they were being forced to work by candlelight – a sham exposed by journalists who showed that it was actually daylight outside at the time.[18] The ruse was carried out with the complicity of some Arab satellite TV stations. More recent such deceptions have come to light as recently as November 2008, when Palestinian Authority officials said Hamas staged new blackouts to try to get sympathy from the international community and provoke civilian violence against the Palestinian Authority and Israel.[19] Further, terrorists in Gaza have fired rockets at – and hit - the power station in the Israeli city of Ashkelon that provides Gaza the majority of its electricity.[20] The terrorists also have fired on Israeli workers at a depot that provides fuel to Gaza and a suicide bomber destroyed lines providing electricity from Israel into Gaza. I'm not sure which I find more offensive, that you front this shit, or that you might actually believe it, especially when you're using sources with less credibility than tabloids.

Lemme tell you something about lies, pissant.

People risked their fucking lives to bring evidence of the damn Izzies using white phosphorus weapons, which they flat denied until not only was the picture and video evidence delivered to every news agency possible, not only the shelling, but their troops loading and firing the (american made, of course) shells.

And they still denied it till some of the shells used were ALSO presented as evidence - the recovery of which was not exactly without tremendous risk on behalf of those taking that action.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/mar/25/israel-white-phosphorus-ga
za

And yet, despite the eventual admission (in the face of repeated denials) that yes, they DID directly shell populated areas with white phosphorus - the right-white neo-crusader crowd you're quoting here still claims otherwise.

I don't know about you, but when I have two sources telling me two different things, and one has lied to me over a hundred times with only a grin and shrug when they get caught - and the other has lied twice, and apologized quite sincerely both times when caught out...

I am more inclined to believe that second source.

For a fact, the word of a known liar who's only concept of "friendship" seems to be a knife in the back means damn little to me.

And the fact that people die because of the combination of religious intolerance, racism, and flat cowardice that allows Israel to continue this conduct without ever being called up short on it means that I find condoning it or excusing it quite despicable.

So why don't you go back to stormfront, where such hate peddling is actually welcome.

Although I hate to say it, I think PN has a point. There's a lot of propaganda that comes from both sides in this conflict - this is a PR war that both are trying to win. So, as with all news sources, read with an open but skeptical mind.

I'm disappointed in both sides of the conflict, really.

I mean, yeah, carving Isreal out of already inhabited lands was an incredibly DUMB idea. If the Allies had actually felt sorry for Jews after the holocaust, then we might have ACCEPTED THEIR REFUGEES instead of tossing them off and telling them basically to go live in the desert and not bother us. I blame Churchill, FDR, and Stalin almost as much as I do Hitler for the suffering in Isreal and Palestine.

Isreal has done some nasty things, no doubt about it, and in my opinion they do come off looking the worst.

But Palestine, Lebanon, and the other Muslim states that won't acknowledge Isreal as a nation HAVE kind of been provoking a wounded dog, ever since Isreal was created.

That's not to say that Isreal hasn't done bad, VILE things, and that some members of their government should be tried for crimes against humanity. But both sides have some responsibility in this conflict.

It frustrates me when we back Isreal unthinkingly, but even more, it frustrates me that there's never any resolution.

For one, "the west" needs to start giving some unbiased coverage to the Palestinians and their cause. Get in there, get cameras and reporters in there, AND get some influential Palestinian leaders to do the unthinkable: simply lay down arms and DON'T FIGHT BACK. And broadcast that shit, 24-7. How would YOU react if you saw Israeli troops opening up on clearly unarmed Palestinians? Would you still back the Israelis, or would you call for them to start working toward a peaceful coexistence?

The hardest part is getting Palestinians to lay down arms, when everything they've learned is that to do so is to invite a massacre of their people by the Israelis - a massacre that will, as always, be ignored by the west and defended by the Israelis.

really there is no incentive for either side to stop what they are doing and to make peace. peace talks have always been a bit of a PR circus from both sides, trying not to lose any more face in international circles.

Israel has little or no intention of pulling back settlements in the west bank. It would be an unpopular move for any political leader, and would upset the powerful more militant branches of Israeli society who settle there. They are a miltarist society, prepared to go to extreme lengths to protect their livestyle - and let's face it, they have good historical reasons to be resolute about protecting their homeland.

Palestine has nothing to gain by being laying down arms - they've been shafted since Israel created itself as a state and they continue to lose ground. The more moderate leaderships never fully represented the more extreme elements have declared infantatas when all seemed poised for resolution.

US's involvement has a peace negotiator in all this is puzzling. Is anybody convinced that the US is neutral in all this? I wonder why they are involved at all, frankly, as it only seems to create another layer of political complication that brings no one any closer to resolution.

I think the problem with recognition of Israel as a state, is that it would then accept the illegal and stupid way the UN created Israel in the first place... and by doing so strengthen Israels position.

Someday, maybe... the time will come when that recognition will come, but it will be about the last thing Palestinians will give up because really, what else do they have to barter with

Also, to resolve this... perhaps the first thing needed is a multi national force to base themselves out of Palestine and point their weapons at Israel, police the rocket attacks but also maybe shoot down Israeli helicopters who fly in. There would be much suspection at first but the first time such a force opened fire on the Israelis in their defense they would find themselves very welcome ... when one side has all the cards, words are never enough, but balance might start some equality.

Last I heard, none of the other Arab countries would take in refugees after the 1948 Nakba. That's why they're stuck in Gaza. That's admittedly a pro-Israel point of view, but it seems to be largely true, and you're right-- it gives the other Arabs a recruiting poster and a pool of opressed to get volunteers from.
