Funny how they can't do that on the Moon.

Quote:

The towering white booster rose into the sky toward the east, peaked at about 28 miles (45 km) altitude, then dropped into the Atlantic Ocean, with parachutes softening its fall. By all appearances, the launch — which was aimed at demonstrating the rocket's design — was successful.

Despite the apparent success of Ares I-X's flight, the ultimate future of the Ares I rocket is uncertain.

The booster was originally designed to replace the space shuttles as a vehicle to ferry crews to the International Space Station. But the station is set to be de-orbited around 2016 and Ares I is not likely to be ready before 2017, defeating much of its purpose, some experts have said.

Last week, an independent review team appointed by U.S. President Barack Obama released a report detailing the status of America's human spaceflight program, and outlined possible alternate visions for NASA's future.

The president is currently reviewing the report and is expected to make a decision soon about whether to proceed with the Constellation program, which includes Ares I, or take the agency in a new direction. The report suggested that President Obama consider giving up on Ares I and instead urging private industry to step in and design a low-earth orbit vehicle for humans. That way, NASA could focus on building a heavy-lift vehicle to take people to the moon and Mars.

The Aries "Moon" rocket is only 1/3rd the size of the Space Shuttle. The Shuttle has a max range of 250 miles. The Moon is 250,000 miles... Do the math.

True enough , blimps wouldn't work on the Moon .

NASA plans a bigger R-C car on Mars , unless it's a big let-down...They mean to drive around vaporizing rocks with a laser beam...

NASA may plan another manned mission to the moon, and then possibly to Mars.

Well PN, are you going to declare this a hoax also?

Yeah, um, PN, you did notice this was a test flight? They were testing not how far the ship could go, but the controls for the engine, firing sequences, responsiveness, and other elements of engine performance.

Here's a tip: Rockets can only steer with gimballed engine mounts, or else all thrusters must fire continuously during the entire flight under thrust. Ask Neil Armstrong, who crashed the LEM Sim even with a gimballed jet engine. Apollo LEMs had fixed engine mounts. I suspect Aries LMs also have fixed engine mounts.

Red China's gonna walk on the Moon too.

I've got a shopping mall to sell you. Biggest in the world...

Sub altitude for range. Do the math.

At 350 miles altitude, solar/cosmic radiation causes Shuttle astronauts to see flashes of light with their eyes closed. They don't go there anymore.

Apollo astronots never saw flashes.

BIG LIE.

Substitute altitude for range, and you've made a grave error. By that method, a 747 has a cruising range of 35,000 feet.

You don't know what the hell you're talking about, and got called on it, and now you're getting pissy about it.

Hello,

LOL! Another wink wink, nudge nudge from Piratenews.

He finally posted his playbook:

Which begs the question, Anthony (or anyone else): Why does anyone bother to respond to PN? He COVERS the threads with bullshit, makes no sense, is so obviously out of his head or playing you guys that anyone can see there's no sense debating him...what do people get out of it?

Always mystifies me.

As to his theory on "big lies"...ooops, he just outted himself. Given that's his premise, then why would we begin to give any credence to ALL the big lies he tells in every one of his posts?

Oh , lookie ! Lunar Module Challenger's descent stage , left on the Moon...the frickin' Moon !

Here is the closeup , taken from a mapping orbit of only about 30 miles altitude...

Of course , the resolution is better when the picture is in reduced size :

'...After Stafford's camera failed, he and Cernan had little to do except look at the scenery until time to dump the descent stage. Stafford had the vehicle in the right attitude 10 minutes early. Cernan asked, "You ready?" Then he suddenly exclaimed, "Son of a bitch!" Snoopy seemed to be throwing a fit, lurching wildly about. He later said it was like flying an Immelmann turn in an aircraft, a combination of pitch and yaw. Stafford yelled that they were in gimbal lock - that the engine had swiveled over to a stop and stuck - and they almost were. He called out for Cernan to thrust forward. Stafford then hit the switch to get rid of the descent stage and realized they were 30 degrees off from their previous attitude. The lunar module continued its crazy gyrations across the lunar sky, and a warning light indicated that the inertial measuring unit really was about to reach its limits and go into gimbal lock. Stafford then took over in manual control, made a big pitch maneuver, and started working the attitude control switches. Snoopy finally calmed down.'

Here's a tip : Un-gimballed Rocket Motors don't get gimbal lock !

Maybe you should take the Aerospace Engineering refresher course...
