Andrew Malcolm compared the President's waist-bow to the upright greetings of Dick Cheney and Douglas MacArthur -- the latter observed during the occupation of Japan after WWII, which Malcolm apparently considers an equivalent situation to Obama's. MacArthur, he wrote, "was not particularly deferential" to the emperor, but "decided to allow Japan to keep its emperor as a ceremonial unifying institution within a nascent democracy. Tojo, on the other hand, was hanged." Obama hanged no one, and bowed to the emperor. The implication is clear: Barack Obama would have surrendered to the Japanese....

“Kyodo News is running his appropriate and reciprocated nod and shake with the Empress, certainly to show the president as dignified, and not in the form of a first year English teacher trying to impress with Karate Kid-level knowledge of Japanese customs.

“The bow as he performed did not just display weakness in Red State terms, but evoked weakness in Japanese terms….The last thing the Japanese want or need is a weak looking American president and, again, in all ways, he unintentionally played that part....

Crikey, is there a single adult in the White House who can teach the commander-in-chief some presidential protocol?

President Obama has been branded the ‘Groveller-in-Chief’ after giving an exaggerated bow to Japan’s emperor Akihito - the son of the ruler who authorised the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

Coming so soon after Remembrance Day, the deep bow caused an outcry in the U.S.

While it was seen as a sign of respect in Japan, Mr Obama was attacked in America for ‘bowing and scraping’ to a foreign leader, particularly a Japanese one. Wartime scars are still raw for many Americans.

The 6ft 2in President’s mark of deference to the 5ft 5in emperor in Japan on Saturday dominated discussion in the U.S. media about the trip....

It's funny, isn't it? Those who are most adamant in their outcries that Obama wants to rule the world, and that the rest of the world falls at his feet as if he already rules the world...

...complain when he goes to another country as a guest and DOESN'T act like he rules the world!

You're never going to have a reasonable discussion with these people. It's a waste of time to try. Instead, point, laugh, and mock incessantly. It doesn't really help, but at least you'll get a chuckle out of it.

That about says it. Wasn't there a photo of Bush kissing Abdullah and bowing to him (as above)--and I know there are lots of him holding HANDS with the King.

That worries me more than Obama showing mutual respect...especially given the numerous ties of the Bush family with Saudi Arabia...

But, sigh, you're right, it's silly to try discussing things with them...

Its a cultural thing and I know a little about Japanese culture (unlike some folks who seem to confine their knowledge to Tom Cruise movies).

The bow is a gesture of respect. Obama's mistake in protocol was his bow was too deep. When equals meet the bow is perfunctory on both sides, respect without submission. But a mistake in protocol is also allowed, even honored because it shows a larger measure of respect for the culture.

This is not comparable to the kowtow, which did show submission to the Chinese Emperor, who was seen as a God on Earth. There was no half bow or respectful bow between equals since Chinese culture had no equal and the Chinese Emperor was above all men.

Some folks talk about MacArthur's refusal to bow. That was also allowed for by Japanese culture in that Japan submitted to him as their conquerer. A bow was never expected, it would have been inappropriate. MacArthur, for all his faults, had a keen understanding of the Oriental mind, even among the various cultures (much the same way Franklin and Jefferson understood the European mindset during the Revolutionary period).

'Course, I kinda have to ask... WHICH media?

I caught Face the Nation, Meet the Press, and This Week with Little Georgie Stephanopolous, and didn't really notice anyone making a big deal of it. Or even hear anyone really even mention it.

So who's this "U.S. media" that's being dominated by discussion of this "incident"? Do they mean FauxNews, and ONLY FauxNews?

RIPWASH

*SIGH*

What gets ME is all the hooplah the left made over the kissing on the cheek and hand holding. In Arabic culture, it is a sign of friendship and respect for kissing on the cheeks and holding hands, yes, even with the men. So . . . there.

As for the above picture . . . once again, the left throws a fit because it looks like Bush is bowing to accept a medal . . . which is kinda accepted all over the world. The recipient inclines his/her head in order to make it easier for the presenter to drape the award over the head. It's that simple.

The only thing I have to say about the Obama bow is that the instant I saw it I thought to myself, "Good grief, he's bowing too low." As in, as Hero stated above, equals bow equally low. A low bow is a sign of subservience from my limited knowledge of world culture.

Yes, I know I'll hear Hannity throwing a hissy fit about this on the way home and quite honestly, I'll probably change the channel. Obama, in order to show respect, may have flubbed it yet again, but who's to say, really? The right can whoop and holler all they want, but the White House is NEVER going to fess up to the flub, no matter how innocent it may have been.
