Hey, the New Year is coming up (altho honestly, I feel like we should be celebrating that Dec 23, but that's another story.)

So.... what did you do last year that you're going to quit? Or what will you be starting this year? Any plans for 2010???

Personally, I plan to take more vacations and learn to say "no" more often.

Well, I quit smoking in July, so let's hope THAT still sticks...

Other than that, I'm looking to get back into bicycling, because I feel I'll die if I don't DO SOMETHING. I do physical work all day, every day, but I still don't feel like I'm getting any real "exercise", and as such, I feel like I'm getting old and brittle. Which I am, but I refuse to accept that. :)

Probably, alas, quit posting on FFF, but more, quit my job. It's taken too much out of me and I'm not well. I need to focus on research, cause i don't take things lying down, and I know better than to rely on the medical community. I guess, if you want something done right, do it yourself. So, that's a project of major time investment.

Otherwise, just be less critical of others, it's not nice, bites you in the ass, and wastes everyone's time.

Also, I have to admit that my news is pirate news, I'll still come here for one reason: It's just more informative and more efficient to keep up with what's going on in the world by coming here than it is by reading the news.

Mid-year, a friend sent me an article by the author of black swans, and one of the things he said was "don't read the news, just know people who do" and I have to say, trying it, yes it's a great time saver, and also as I said, better information. I'd rather read about Molech eating babies if in the middle of it is actual info about secret prisons, unfair trade agreements, etc, then read typical MSM lies, when all that's underneath is a partisan bias on one side or the other. That said, I think that Tiger Woods is not a news story for any purpose other than humor.[/snark]

My plans for 2010? Same as last year and 2008, put people in jail, vote Republican, cheer the Browns, and rescue puppies.

Not all those things worked out like I wanted, but over 2009 turned out better then 2008. 2010 will be pretty much the same, although I get another week's vacation (up to three now).

This is also the 2nd year in a row I've had someone jailed at 4pm on the day before the long Holiday Christmas weekend. They went in Wednesday afternoon, got out Monday morning...makes me feel all jolly inside. Did they deserve it...daytime purse snatching at a grocery store, victim an elderly woman...I'm sure PN would say I'm abusing my power, he may even be right, but that don't make it wrong, but you don't assault little old ladies in my town and not make my special Christmas list.

Plans here are to keep up the 5k walk/run most every day and increase the 'run' part. Madame Geezer has similar plans. We're looking to get out of town for a week or ten days most months. Looking at the map for places we've never been. Also a few Broadway shows. We love being retired. We really love it. Seriously. No kidding. I mean, on a scale of one to ten, being retired is infinity plus one. Chortle.

Retirement sounds great except I'd be freaking about the savings part, like how do you keep it from melting? Or how do you keep from WORRYING about it melting?

Your "real exercise" comment along with having read too many posts on RWED for the last year

got me thinking about ideas that started as real world solutions but ended up in scifi land: We need an "Under Government."

Not real a "Government" per se, that term is really to mock the idea of Government, but a resource, organization for people to solve their own problems without waiting for the government. My ideal gov would have thoroughly researched nutrition and health and would have a plan for you, for all of us, for effective exercise and not just a food pyramid that gets flipped every 10 years. Our nation's health and nutrition is horrific (it's embarrassing) and a lot of that is the due to the back room connections between gov and Big Food. It's not that different than Gov and Big Insurance.

The idea is if the Gov isn't going to do what we want them to, what we hired them to do (like health care) then f*ck 'em, we'll do it without them, and we don't need guns or violence. Just go around them. You waste too much energy fighting when you can just side step and keep moving.

Health Care: People connecting with Drs that want to be a part, creating their own insurance companies, creating their own whatever instead of waiting for the gov to provide some water downed, bureaucratic shell game that we pay too much for.

Unfortunately, that's where the idea crosses over into the realm of science fiction. Organizing something like that would take hundreds of people to volunteer on their off hours or quit their current jobs altogether.

I'm not that offended by Wulf's jokes. I didn't find the Black/Asian one funny, nor the Ghetto one, because I don't think either is FUNNY, not because of the stereotypes. But it's no less than I'd expect from Wulf, so to me it'd be a waste to castigate him on them.

The car thing is saying Tiger can't drive a CAR more than 300 yards...and I found that one and the first one mildly amusing. None were really good tho'...are they from late night? I would have expected a bit better from those guys...or maybe not these days...

Geez, I'm jealous. Jim and I would ADORE to travel...him across America, me across the Pond and Beyond. But we're with Piz, we're too scared to spend much. The times they are a-changED! So you get out there and have fun for ALL of us, y'hear?

Madame and I both worked civil service for 35+ years, so our retirement's pretty good, and we dumped all we could into TSP, the govt's IRA plan. Our home is paid off, so we got few expenses. We never have bought anything, aside from the house and a couple of cars, we didn't pay cash for. Oh, and we got no kids. Mostly just dumb luck.

Nope, that's not dumb luck, that's smarts.

Got a friend similar to you. She worked for the Park Service, so had housing, horse, skiis, etc., provided for her. Her husband was an air traffic controller in Tahoe, so you know the kind of money they make! Neither spent much, they get their food thru a co-op (living in rural areas, no supermarkets or many stores within 50 miles). Their entertainment consists mostly of backpacking and rafting.

So when they retired, they were good. They built their own house and are free to travel and pursue their interests without worrying.

Jim and I, on the other hand, were stupid. We had custody of one or the other of his two kids, yet he let his wife go on getting child support. He let her have their house, too. We spent money on camera gear, motorcycles, traveling and buying "things" all our lives. I've always lived up to the limit of my earnings, whether they were good or bad.

I made the mistake of bringing someone mentally ill here from England; keeping her for four years put us badly in debt. It took years to pay off, and now we don't buy anything we can't pay cash for, nor own credit cards.

Luckily Jim insisted on using all our savings to pay off the house, because the next year I got laid off, and he followed the year after. We've never had jobs that paid so well since. Yes, we can get by decently (for now!) because our needs are few, we don't spend anymore, and because despite our previous spending, we never really lived high on the hog. But we weren't smart, and we're paying for it.

You WERE smart, and so was Paula, not lucky. Yes, working for civil service or park service or something is really helpful, but it's not the whole story by a long shot.

That's kinda what my podunk little security company does, since the local police was too busy makin money on tickets and forfeiture to actually, yanno, protect the communities - which then hired us, and this past month CUT half the police force when they got all obnoxious about being less relevant, and exposed for the protection racket they really are.

So not only did we manage to sidestep, we subverted the one problem most folks have with that, still having to pay the bill for services you don't get (kinda like insurance indeed!) cause we cut the living hell out of their budget.

It's an excellent concept, and while it may sound ironic on the face of it given that it's an "organized" concept you're proposing, I would suggest contacting any local Anarchists in your area, because they're as a rule quite happy to mutually cooperate, despite rumors to the contrary, and the idea would appeal to them.
