They did. In Serenity.

Freedom... for awhile. Until the inevitable corruption kicked in.

Revolutions are an inevitable cycle of "civilization".

The alliance would not have given up. The show would have been about defending a territory under attack, just the forms of attack would change.

Eternal vigilance. Don't ever forget it, but never lose focus of the serenity you are protecting.

People would have a better idea of how to spell "Independents", for one thing. ;)

Maybe that's why we lost...All those " Crappy spellers , Untie ! and Join the Independant Army " posters just failed to have the desired effect...

They couldn't have won. While clearly they had the much desired resources that the Core and Blue Sun coveted, much like the South in the civil war, they didn't have the numbers, technology, or manufacturing power to win.

Theoretically, though? Two options.

Something like a guillotine of the powers that be, except for the powers that be that were willing to deal and were already playing both sides. As the less experienced Independent High Command was out politically and economically maneuvered, the Blue Sun corporation would have further cemented their power base and very likely have given rise to a Corporatocracy after the confederacy of the Independents eventually failed. This was similar happened with the first of the French Revolutions. The Republic left itself weakened due to the prolonged combat and the efforts of nation building, only instead of a behind the scenes corporate puppet master, Napoleon rose to power. But it's comparable, and very likely.

Or, Independents and the powers that be would have replaced parliament, but kept the system of existing abuses already in place. And, then the ulterior motives of Independent high command would have made themselves clear, most likely with the Core worlds being raided and robbed blind of technological resources in a fool-hardy effort to redress grievances and jealousy felt by the Rim worlds. While at the same time, Blue Sun is robbing everyone and being given even less scrutiny.

War is THEIR game, Wulf. You can't win playing their game. You have to not play at all. Build up your foundations, your independence, build yourself a community of local support, pull out of their system, encourage as many people as you can to do the same. Resist them if they come knocking at your door, but do so subtlely, and keep a low profile. And eventually, when their base erodes out underneath them, when they strangle themselves on their endeavors, the collapse and rebuilding will be free of the specters of the past.

Im "old school" so to speak...

You need a "light" to find your way in the black.

Playing it close, keeping it subtle, only works for so long.

After a while, you need the spark to dispel the darkness, and to give folks a place to gather and ready themselves.

What spark, Wulf? The spark of a Boston Massacre (and guess what, the Brits were acquitted!), or the spark of those souls that help to shepherd people to safety? Which stays secret and endures longer?

Fight, and be unafraid of death, but pick your battles.

Of course, that's not such a great idea when you're living inside a powderkeg...

Actually, I'm sorry Wulf. That was a bit preachy of me. The most I have any right to ask of you is to be yourself. But just be careful, is all. Sometimes causes aren't what they say they are, and there are people out there all too willing to throw even their allies into a meat grinder. And it's not all glory, there's choices too, about what impact you want to have on innocent people. If you attract the tanks, there's gonna be collateral damage.

Byte,

Well said, again. I suspect that Wulf is only feeding himself to the meat grinder, though he has a family, IIRC. But yes, I've known people who have gone down in a blaze of glory, and tyranny didn't end. In fact, little changed. Discretion is the better part of valor, no?

Seconded . And , Byte , not to worry about the 'preachy' bits...Sometimes , these things need saying , by way of reminder...

Experience has shown me that discretion is just about all there is , to valor...

Ya know, Wulfie, I don't have a problem with you misspelling a word - UNLESS it's the word for that one thing you supposedly believe in. Seems if it's so damned important to you, you could learn how to spell it correctly. Or, you could remain ignorant and keep practicing your "freadumb of speach".
