Well not Obama personally, but the IRS did, and since Obama's the President, he gets the credit from me.

I filed my income taxes, like I've done for almost 40 years, at the end of January. I was due to get a refund of $ 550. Monday I got a letter from the IRS. I saw it and said oh jeeeez, what do they want?...what did I do wrong? I have never been audited or had any problems in 40 years. When I opened the envelope, to my amazement, was a form letter that stated that they had "re-calculated" my return and included an un-taken credit, and their calculations were that my refund would now be $ 950. I got the check today for the $ 950! Maybe this type of thing happens to others, but for me I a bit stunned.

It just means that when you did your taxes,
you didn't read all the lines of your return.
Line 63, the "Making Work Pay" tax credit.

But don't worry, they'll get it all back and more in 2010 when they eliminate a whole slew of deductions (like the local and state income tax deduction) that benefited anyone making a home mortgage payment.
And in 2011 the tax on inheritances is slated to go WAY up.

You guessed it correct. I remember seeing the "Line 63" mentioned in the letter. I had never heard of it until today from you, and this from the IRS website:

Making Work Pay Questions and Answers: General Issues

Q1. What is the Making Work Pay Credit?

A. In tax years 2009 and 2010, the Making Work Pay provision will provide a refundable tax credit of up to $400 for individuals and up to $800 for married taxpayers filing joint returns.

But still, somehow they went through the trouble to figure out that my employer had not been giving me the credit each week in my paycheck, and then they gave it to me. I find that very cool. As far as future taxes, we'll just have to wait and see. I've heard a lot of scary tax predictions over the last 40 years, but never has anything hurt me.

Seriously, put it in perspective, man.

At least you're not an independent contractor whos tax rate approaches damn near 50% and goes way over it when you include state, local, sales, excise, motor fuel, utility line, telephone and all them other fucking taxes on top of it...

And the state of MI is howling more me to pay more, which if I cannot find a way to jam up the works on em, they can damn well wait for till the very last minute, and then I'll do that much economic retaliation and more in exchange.
(I'm STILL pounding away at SCHIP in retaliation for the 1300% increase on a certain product, mind)

We quit spending so much money on corp-welfare for the mil-industry complex and put some of that into education, and improving conditions within our own country instead of fucking up other peoples, or hell, even stopped taking so damn much of it folks can barely survive, I might not bitch so much...

But be DAMNED if imma act all thankful when "the masters" throw the gnawed down bone back to me as a backhanded courtesy, oh hell no.

You're right Frem. It was my money in the first place, but I've never really been the expectin' anything type. So I was surprised and happy over the extra money coming back. Nothin' wrong with feeling that way, right? The world seems to be a rather depressing place these days. As I get older, I try to find something positive or joyous in even the most insignificant things. That's how I live with myself now, and how I want to go out. Just call me Pollyanna.
