Aliens need a planet, they'll take Earth, or a planet in Andromeda with twice our population (oh, and everyone dies on the chosen world to make way).

The aliens contact YOU for the decision. What say you, oh logical ones?

The need of the many?

Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

Err, not knowing anything about the 2 other alien species' intelligence, nature, history, culture; my first loyalty goes to my own kind, my second loyalty goes to the race of aliens that already inhabits a planet - I don't think it's right to supplant one group of aliens with another.

So I tell the Aliens that contacted me no dice.

Either that or I judge the two alien species on cute-ness, deeming the furry saucer-eyed ones more worthy of survival than the slimy bug ones.

All in all, a strange hypothetical.

Heads should roll

So, uhhh, logic is replaced here by emotional familiarity.
So much for number crunching & the good of "the many."

Okay, let's play.
The planet in the Andromeda galaxy is full of fuzzy warm loving intelligent peeps that know not of war or hatred or racism. Their only vice is that they fornicate- A LOT.
So, kill the f***ers, or let our own war-torn, hate filled planet go?

Or, maybe, tell the aliens to go frak themselves; it's not up to us to decide what evil you want to perpetrate?

Okay, WHY do the aliens need a whole new planet, exactly? Have they killed their planet off, or fucked its ability to support them? Or have they fucked themselves crazy, and overrun their homeworld?

Either way, I'm disinclined to give them a whole new planet. I'll maybe armwrestle 'em for it. 'Sides, if I lose, it's not like my whole planet's going to hate me forever - after all, they've only got a very short time left to live, so what do I care? :)

I take it as seriously as one can take this kind of thing. I'm a pragmatist; if I win, I'm the HERO OF THE WORLD. If I lose? Well... I'm the goat. But only for a very short while, and then we're all ghosts, so who really cares about losing?

For me, there's no real downside.

Besides, would you argue that there's really a downside to scrubbing humanity off this rock?

Jewish folk of mostly European decent displacing a indig population by force to claim their land...

This is a lame one. Try The Terrorist and His Daughter.

You are the Mayor of Chicago. A terrorist has hidden a dirty atomic bomb somewhere in the loop and will detonate it in one half hour. No time to evacuate the city. Your advisors tell you that they have found, incontrovertably, that the only thing that will cause the terrorist to stop the bomb and surrender is to see his daughter suffering the pain of severe torture on TV. He doesn't care if she lives or dies, so driving her to the loop to be blown up won't stop him, but can't stand to see her suffer. He's also an expert at FX and CGI, etc. so will spot fakery. There are no other alternatives.

You can have one little girl tortured to save millions, or let millions die and keep your ethics intact.

BTW, this is the terrorist's daughter.

Thats easy. I contact the leaders of our world and demand a hundred billion dollars in exchange for choosing the other world.

If they agree, I get a boatload of cash, save the Earth, and keep humanity alive, thus serving myself, my homeworld, and my species.

If they don't agree, I choose the other world to live thus dying a noble death sacrificing myself and all I hold dear to save many more lives. Needs of the many and such.

Both choices are morally correct and absolves me of blame since I placed the decision in the hands of our leaders, those unhappy few fate placed in position to make decsions on behalf of our entire planet. Cash is the bonus.

As to this:

"If they agree, I get a boatload of cash, save the Earth, and keep humanity alive, thus serving myself, my homeworld, and my species.

If they don't agree, I choose the other world to live thus dying a noble death sacrificing myself and all I hold dear to save many more lives. Needs of the many and such."

Uhhh - you realize that if you and the entire planet are dead there will be no one to care about your noble death. And your gambit works only as far as you are able to convince others that you would be willing to also die - something that such an obviously self-serving person would be not likely to do.

If they pay you off and you live, you will be reviled wherever you go. You may even find that your money is not very good, as very few would be willing to deal with you.

If they don't pay you off and you die, that is the end of all nobility.

If they don't pay you off and you decide you do WANT to live, you are really stuck, b/c you will have your life but you will also have world-class infamy and no money. You are better off committing suicide.

There is no good end for you in this scenario.

I reject the hypothetical of the first one; the idea is absurd, and them coming to me to decide even more absurd. Glad it's been treated as a sci fi joke.

As to the second one, I reject it on the grounds that it wouldn't stop the terrorist anyway. Anyone who was what you described, especially if he didn't care whether she lived or died, would blow it. Plus there's all the complexity of "how do you stop torturing her and when, how do you make the exchange since the minute you stop torturing her" and on and on and on.

Fun thread, tho'.

Exactly; it's so absurd a notion that the only way to respond is with further absurdity. This is the kind of fevered wet dream that Geezer and his kind love to indulge in - the ticking bomb scenario from "24", their favorite brand of right-wing torture porn.

What he's trying to do is so absurdly transparent as to defy any attempt at a reasonable discussion. If you say, "Torture the kid, save the city," then you've given all the justification they need to say, "Ahhh - so you admit that torture works, and you endorse it!"

I'll bet if I tortured Cheney long enough, he'd gladly admit that torture doesn't work, which only proves that torture is a great tool for getting someone to tell you whatever you want to hear.

Oh you're just a bit out of bounds here. You wanna talk about selling out? How 'bout your Dem pals who were bribed for their votes? The Cornhusker Kickback, The Louisiana Purchase, and dozens of other un-disclosed back-door deals done where Senators & Reps "sold out" their principles for money, or sold out for Obama promises of jobs when they lose their re-election bids. Just today, little Denny Kucinich, after his plane ride with the Corruptor In Chief Obama, announced he will now "switch" his vote to Yes. I wonder what he got?...Maybe some platform shoes, or a gift card to Supercuts? There's also evidence that the White House committed possible felonies in 2 states by offering jobs to potential Dem candidates, actually bribing them not to run against the incumbents. The whole thing stinks to hell. Also, can't wait to that pos Edwards is indicted, probably in April...wonder if he'll fly off to exile in France or take the heat like a man....there's a first time for everything, right? And of course there's wonderful Mr. Rangle (as in wrangle me up some more dough, that I won't report to the IRS either!). I could go on with many more example of Democrat treachery and selling out their souls. But why bother...I expect a response that will have equal or greater examples from Republicans bad behavior. But please don't give me that Republican only crap.

You *expect* such a response? Why, because you know deep in your black little lump of coal you call a heart that it's true, that the Republicans have about 300,000 times as many scandals, felonies, lies, and treasonous acts under their belts?

And I wouldn't say it's ONLY Republicans that do it. I'll leave the blanket generalizations to you and your kind. ;)

Good one, Chris. But it don't fit here; and besides, everyone is "the One", yes?

I'm ignoring the "little battle" going on here toward the end...I'll just say that both parties, and those in non-parties, have more than enough scandals, pay-offs and bribes to their "credit". Actually, how about "all politicians", and many non-politicians?

Wrong. "The Terrorist and His Daughter" (complete with a picture of the cute daughter, holding a guinea pig) was presented to me and others at a Smithsonian seminar on Philosophy by Mitchell Green, the NEH/Horace Goldsmith Distinguished Teaching Professor of Philosophy at the University of Virginia.

I suspect that this scenario, or something similar, is presented in most Intro to Philosophy classes. First the prof rejects any other solutions but torture or bombs, and then asks the class members what they'd do - and no matter the response, questions it and asks the student to defend it. That's what happened in the seminar. It seems to be more a way of making the student think than trying to get to an answer.

That doesn't mean that this HASN'T been used by neoCONS, not as a teaching tool but as a propaganda tool - to stampede people into ANYthing just to avoid terrorism "in the form of a mushroom cloud" (Oct 2002).

Ah HA! You have divined the meaning of it all, Niki!
The aliens asked EACH of us the question as if we were the only ones to have control of our outcome, then tallied up the answers. With the notable exception of Hero, California, and a few blocks in Norway, the majority of our planet's peeps replied "Effue, JERKS!" We scored a planetary collective "B" and were allowed to live!
And... we live to talk about it (except for those who've been mind-wiped of the whole affair).

We are more noble as a race than generally accepted, it seems.

Depends on your search engine. On "Go" (which is use most often), the first entry was cute little anime girl; on Google, I got none of what's pictured here; on Ask, the first one was this:

RUH ROH!

Geezer lying AGAIN??

BTW- It was the outfit that killed the cuteness factor. Too over the top, d'ya think? I'd torture the parents for putting that thing on her in the first place!

FWIW, this came up #1 for me

I don't think she's particularly cute... her lips are too thin and her nose is too big (for a kid).

Well, you apparently follow NeoCon literature more closely than I do (if you do have an actual cite and not just conjecture), since I never heard of that scenario until the seminar.

I could write a similar one where the crazy Conservative President was gonna invade Iraq and slaughter a bunch of folks, and the only way to stop him was to assassinate his VP, who was the real decider. Like that better?

Depends on if you put "cute little girl" in quotes on the search line. I didn't. Looks like you did. Also depends on your Safe-search setting.

No quotes and safe-search off, like I used, gets this page.

http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&safe=off&gbv=2&tbs=isch%3A1&sa=1
&q=cute+little+girl&btnG=Search&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&start=0

Wanted a seated figure and little bad-dresser was the first one.

Maybe you should complain to Google, since there's not much in the way of non-anglo cute little girls on their first page.

Are you saying that Bush wasn't a neoCON following a neoCON agenda ? Are you saying that he and Cheney didn't argue for torture as a way to get 'actionable intelligence' ? Are you saying that they didn't argue that the failure to get such intelligence could put us at risk for that 'mushroom cloud' or other WMDs ? Are you saying that US forces didn't kidnap and hold families hostage ? Are you saying that innocent people weren't tortured ?

Or is your argument so tortured that all you can babble is that they didn't make that EXACT same argument ? Because really, that would be stupid, wouldn't it ?

BTW, nice dodge after you were shown to be lying, yet again. Just pull up stakes and move on to setting the agenda on a new topic. Just like a true professional.

Sounds like a right-wing seminar, if your only choices are between torturing and killing...

Maybe you could post their curriculum! :) I understand if you can't "goggle" it. ;)

Is there any acceptable answer where I get to assassinate them both? I mean, the Prez is just as evil as his VP, since he CHOSE him as his VP, right?

Don't follow the logic in your argument. I owe nothing to the other world. It is also not my place to make the decision for everyone else. I also have a valuable service or commodity to sell and am free to make a contract to exchange my service for valuable consideration.

By withholding my own selfish interst and placing the decision in the hands of world leaders I am in fact making the most moral decision possible. The monetary consideration is merely for the value of the service performed, something any professional would understand.
