Truly, what horrible stuff it is - and yet, just you TRY to find anything on the shelf without HFCS, MSG or something else nasty in it ?

I saw it listed as an ingredient in a package of cheese the other day and was like, WTF ?

At least you can finally get REAL maple syrup again, as the well deserved backlash against this garbage increases.

'...last week we watched the documentary King Corn on PBS. it's all about corn production in america, and the excessive amount of corn we consume as a society, primarily through high fructose corn syrup (found in most commercially processed food), and through consumption of corn fed beef. the film is very well made, and features two young guys who try to learn about corn by growing their own acre, and trying to track where it goes once they sell it. one aspect of the film has continued to haunt me. most of the farmland in the US is used to produce an inedible product. the field corn they grew in the documentary must be processed before it can be consumed by humans. i found this info on the national corn growers association website:

"...Corn-on-the-cob and canned or frozen corn at the grocery store come from sweet corn. The corn you grow in your garden also is a variety of sweet corn. But the most abundant type of corn grown in the United States is actually field, or dent, corn. Almost all of the corn you see in farm fields is dent corn.

Unlike sweet corn, dent corn has a hard outer portion about the thickness of your fingernail. The inner portion of the corn kernel is soft and floury. Dent corn is used to make starches, oils, livestock feed, ethanol fuel and many other products like crayons, paints and paper. Dent corn also is used to make corn syrup sweeteners and other ingredients that appear in all kinds of foods from soft drinks to baked goods.

In 1996, U.S. sweet corn growers harvested about 119,400 acres of sweet corn. By comparison, the amount of land dedicated to dent corn production is much larger. U.S. corn growers plant about 71 million acres of field corn each year."

those statistics are quite dated. the amount of dent corn grown today is much higher, especially with the increased demand for ethanol, and the rising prices. if you are interested in this topic, i urge you to see the film, or just start poking around online, it's fascinating stuff, for sure.'

I've seen that documentary, very chilling, great double bill with Food Inc - not good for the blood pressure. The part where ex-mercs try and intimidate regular farmers into growing what Cargill etc wants was especially frustrating. And if skulking about the front of their farmhouses in the middle of the night doesn't work they threaten with lawsuits, which the farmers couldn't possibly afford.
Again, We Suck! I swear I'm getting bumper stickers and buttons made.

Haha, I recently saw a commercial from the corn lobby that was a guy talking to a mother saying, hey, you shouldn't give your kids that! It has HFCS in it! And she gave him a stepford smile and said, why not? And he was all like "well... it causes health problems!" and she was like "it has the same amount of calories as regular sugar..." as if the replacement for SUGAR use was the only problem with it.

Um, how about it's heavily processed, there's often bad chemicals in it, corn process products can shred your digestive system... etc?

As I recall, the supersize me guy shredded his liver. Just fat, or the sugar and HFCS in all of it too?

Probably has much to do with the epidemic of IBS , and certainly much to do with the diabetes epidemic...

Good point about the chemicals...Using toxic agents to process 'inedible' corn into something for use by the 'food industry' seems like a really bad idea...

All that white flour used by the fast-food industry is also bad...Alloxin is what they use to bleach the flour , and I'm told it's also what is used to induce diabetes in lab animals...

Also, corn contains gluten and that stuff is toxic in my opinion.

I just went gluten free about 6 weeks ago and after about a month of withdrawal like symptoms I am starting to feel much better.

Here is an article about it. It also links to another article called The Dark Side of Wheat if anyone is interested.

I can't even look at a loaf of wheat bread anymore without seeing a poison sign on it.

That's why it was soooo hard for me to give up. I loved my wheat breads. I eat Millet bread now. I actually like it, but the first time my husband had it his first comment was "Yum ... sawdust.." :) It's an acquired taste.

Ok, the meat reclamation thing don't bother me so much, but not for the reasons you think.

When you slay an animal for food, I think there is a moral obligation to waste as little as possible of it in respect to the life you ended to obtain that food - this is also why I got no particular issue with Halal meat, it shows at least SOME respect for the taken life and tries to ease it on it's path with dignity and mercy.

Of course, I know that ain't the reason behind the practice of meat reclamation so much as it is to maximize profit, but once again, I note that the reasons for folks actions never do quite matter so much as the actions themselves and their results.

Waste Not. Want Not.

Oh, and regarding the whole bleaching/gluten thing... while I don't have some of the same viewpoints regarding that, prolly cause I lack some of the sensitivies that'd make it a problem, I DO have a suggestion and reccommendation for ya.

They make a right decent unbleached, unbrominated flour that I use in my cooking, and it's excellent in every respect, AND they offer gluten free and specialty mixes which I am sure will appeal to even the most extreme requirements, of respectable quality for a decent price.
And best of all, they're a worker-owned co-op, more or less, which makes it a pretty guilt free enterprise, that.

The real irony is that I did not initially know ANY of this, having purchased the first bag to use as a base for the breading of some chicken marsala, and the recipe came out so well (in fact, it's kinda legendary and I bribe people with it now!) that I remembered the flour brand, so they won me over on price and quality, all the rest being pure bonus.

I think the same thing about meat reclamation. Though Halal meat is pretty much the exact opposite of giving the animal dignity and mercy IMO.

Back to the topic, I just threw out my KELLOG'S corn flakes, my grape-flavoured HFCS (AKA jelly), and various other assorted diabetes-causing/liver destroying products.
My local food co-op is now my main shopping place.

We're done being lab rats for the man, even if in a small way. I grew up with SUGAR, and I'm still flying.

I would question that.

Are you saying it's less merciful cause it's not instantaneous, or are you saying it's less merciful cause of the specific religion involved, or the religious aspect at all ?

Cause I didn't mean from a technical aspect, as much as a spiritual one - while it may not be instantaneous, the practice is carried out focused on the animal as an individual being rather than naught more than a product, and with the essential intention being the respect of the life that is being taken.

Mind you, I dunno so much about other forms of this beyond standard factory line (in which they use a bolt gun) and Halal, because I live near a right lot of folk from that kinda culture, but I suspect your statement has more to do with personal intolerance than anything else, since the methods of Halal and Kosher are to an outsider, all but identical.

And of course I ain't friendly to any of those beliefs, but at least there's the intent, the acknowledgment of the animal as a being and the attempt to be merciful, the will behind it isn't evil, is what I had meant.

Not that the will of the person with the knife or boltgun matters a whole lot to the animal, I think, but it's the principle of the thing - the same way I would much rather be shot by someone who hated me than catch a stray round not even aimed at me...

Not sure I could explain it to someone who's not of my own beliefs, past that.

Isn't gluten also linked to atopic eczema/neurodermatitis in small children?

I once had a miller/baker tell me that the only kind of bread small children should eat is the really dark pumpernickel kind. The kind that's nearly pitch-black. Wikipedia tells me, though, that the American version has very little to do with the original German recipe.

Well enough. No child would touch that bread willingly.

I think you're right about the dark pumpernickle bread. That kinda scares me too. :)

I use buckwheat flour for making sweetbreads, scones and cookies. Just add some bananas to hold the flour mixture together and it works out great.
Plus the bananas add just enough sweetness to the mix so I don't need to add any other sweetner.

Even though it's called buckwheat there is no wheat in it. Nice nutty flavor. Kids would like it I think.

Because it's not instantaneous. And for the record I don't find that hanging an animal upside down still alive then cutting it's throat to let it bleed to death is in any way merciful, let alone more merciful than an instantaneous death from a bolt gun.
