And pretty much every American citizen, right ?

Mr Weber ( the do-rag guy ) was respectful, articulate, reserved in his demeanor, and knowledgeable on the matters of the Constitution. He represents EXACTLY why so many Tea Party members, across this country, are so " angry " at Washington.

And btw....Congressman LoBiondo ? He's a Republican.

Split the country into three. East and north midwest, west and south, and west coast.

Dissolve the federal government completely, just have it be states.

Form a national movement to not take politics so seriously (not likely to work).

Government shift to moderates (will make the government more corrupt, but the illusion will make both extremes feel less threatened).

I do not expect my congress people to know every single factoid of the Constitution. I'm sure there are those that do but also have no character, no ethics, and lack even simple common sense.

This guy was angry and desperate from probably reading way too many forums, and totally caught up in the fad of Political Hysteria, and had no where to put all that steam, so he blind sided a politician - small man imho. You think that politician went back home and studied the Constitution?

I am really curious about Tea Partiers though - I should start a thread because I really don't know what is important to them. The little I know they seem more motivated by Anti-posturing and Anti-beliefs, but like I say, I just don't know.

And there in lies the problem. Just as Mr Weber said, it's our obligation to know the Constitution, it's the JOB of Congressmen to know it, as they vowed to defend it. Do you not agree ?

He should have. But in all honesty, do you REALLY think Mr Weber was " angry and desperate " ? Sounded to me that he was motivated, to be sure, but he was anything but how you describe him. I saw that he was polite, well spoken, respectful and sincere. If knowing the basics of the U.S. Constitution is a 'fad' of political hysteria, then I suggest we all get caught up. He's anything but 'small'.

I think Mr Weber is an excellent example of what motivates the Tea Party crowd. He's articulate, passionate, and respectful Because he embarrassed this REPUBLICAN Congressman from New Jersey goes a long way to prove that they're far more concerned with simply being " anti " Democratic party, or " anti " Obama. The roots of this movement go back to at least as far back as 2006, if not further, imho.

I don't put as much emphasis in knowing it in detail as you do. I'm fine with them knowing the spirit of it and defending that. Does knowing section 1 article 1 come up often for these guys? I don't think that the degree with which they have it memorized is in direct proportion to the quality with which they will perform their elected duties.

I think he was showing the same selfishness I see from other Townhallers on both sides, "I don't have anything constructive to say about current issues but you damn well will hear me say it." That's his anger and frustration coming through.

This clip just came out of nowhere for me. There are so many other more important problems to deal with than whether this guy has memorized the Constitution. You been reading about what China's economy has been doing lately?

http://moneymorning.com/2009/12/03/china-2010/

"China isn't just leading the global economic recovery - it's lapping the field."

Health Kare?

"At least 15% of the population is completely uninsured, and a substantial additional portion of the population (21%) is "underinsured", or not able to cover the costs of their medical needs. More money per person is spent on health care in the United States than in any other nation in the world, and a greater percentage of total income in the nation is spent on health care in the U.S. than in any United Nations member state except for East Timor. Despite the fact that not all citizens are covered, the United States has the third highest public healthcare expenditure per capita. A 2001 study in five states found that medical debt contributed to 62% of all personal bankruptcies. Since then, health costs and the numbers of uninsured and underinsured have increased.

Instead this guy wants to grill his Congressman that section 1 article 1 means "No more activist Judges." ??

I love his sincerity, much better than apathy, just think his priorities are off.

Gotta say, I'm kinda with Rappy on this one.

It really is these peoples' full-time JOB to know the Constitution and to damned well follow it. Be nice to think that one or two of 'em actually know a little about what it actually SAYS.

Sure, you don't have to be able to cite case law, chapter and verse, extemporaneously, but it would be nice to think they could at least commit the broad strokes to memory...

Tell me, Rappy... have you memorized the Constitution? Can you recite it chapter and verse?

'Cause as my dad would say... "That's what they invented writing for".

Nope. Not chapter and verse. Shame on me. But then, I'm not the one writing the laws for this country either.

All I'm saying, is that it shouldn't be too much to ask for our lawmakers to have at least some working comprehension of what the Constitution says.

Amendment 3 - Quartering of Soldiers. Ratified 12/15/1791. Note

No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.

=============

He could have REALLY nailed him with that one!

As Signym points out, it's written down. I should thank you and Mr. Weber for getting me curious though:

http://www.usconstitution.net/const.html (great site btw)

Lots of ancient stuff, and common knowledge items (certainly I don't know the article or amendment number) nothing too surprising so far. It makes me even more convinced that bringing it up to score points with is grandstanding on a very small scale, and trivial compared to the real work we're behind on.
But I'm open to learning AU - what current issue is in direct conflict with the constitution? And please see if you can do that without looking at the document!

I do wish those in Washington would memorize the Tenth Amendment, because their comprehension of it sucks.

“ The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. ”

I think it's great to see someone ask articulate questions, and far better than what we've mostly seen of town hall meetings.

I do think our legislators should know the Constitution, but I don't expect them to be able to spout it verbatum at a moment's notice.

This guy's point was about "activist judges"--there isn't even a formal "vacancy" on the Supreme Court, won't be one for months, there is no "replacement judge" yet proposed, so it's a little out of proportion to me for him to be spending so much time on this issue.

The fact that one respectful, articulate guy asks questions at a town hall meeting in no way mitigates what's been happening at others. From your title, it's obvious that's what you're trying to say, but it doesn't wash. ONE guy doesn't stand up against the myriad disrupters at town halls, and given the INSTRUCTIONS on how to disrupt one, it's pretty clear what's been happening.

Nice this guy was polite, but that's about all. Your point in posting it is irrelevant.
