Okay, I'm flabbergasted, I admit. I honestly expect that this must be a hoax, or a hack of the F1 website.

Okay, I'm *IN* the motorsports community here. I race here. Well, not *here*, because there's nowhere to race here. There are places near San Antonio, and places outside San Marcos, but they're talking about a full-fledged, from-the-ground-up, purpose-built facility for Formula One, the pinnacle of auto racing in the world. We're talking cars that hit more than 220mph on the straights, then have to slow down to under 30mph for some of the hairpins at the end of those straights. We're talking companies like Toyota, rumored to put a billion dollars a year into their F1 team, and Ferrari, who spends upwards of $450 million to race two cars in 17 races. This is racing by the cubic dollar.

And I never heard even a peep that anyone was even TALKING about this. Seriously. And I would be convinced that it was a hoax, but every news agency seems to be talking about it, too.

Needless to say, if they have a race here in 2012, I am *SO* there. Yes, I'm an F1 geek. To have it in my hometown would be simply amazing, and something I never thought I'd get to see in person.

If American drivers don't have the talent required (because they've only been taught how to turn left by generations of NASCAR) and American companies aren't willing to put in the money and effort required, do you honestly want to hamstring everyone else in the world and force them to lower the bar for the series, just so a few dumb 'Muricans can compete?

India has a team. Russia has a driver. That America has neither is a result not of rules being rigged specifically to keep us out, but rather of Americans traditionally showing more interest in watching pushrod-engined sedans with carburetors going around ovals and listening to hillbilly drivers who sound like Boomhauer from King of the Hill saying things like, "Well shit-dang, Billy Bob! I was gonna fake high then peek low, but 'fore ya knew it, I got tapped, she got loose, and then I fetched up into the fence, and next thing I knew, I'se on the roof. That's racin'."

Lots of companies have tried and failed to break into F1. They don't seem to realize that it is a long-term investment. Porsche tried and failed. Ford and Cosworth (DFV) used to be *THE* engine of choice for F1, but they failed to keep up with the development necessary, so they became insignificant. Because of an unwillingness to put in the time, money, and effort necessary to succeed and be competitive, most Americans simply dismiss F1 as being "too snooty". It's just beyond them that maybe they just haven't dedicated themselves to competing in such rarefied air. And it must really burn to know that there are superior British, Brazilian, Indian, Japanese, Finnish, Italian, and German drivers out there, capable of literally running rings around them.

Step up and compete, and get serious, or get out of the way.

Of course, all of my closer relatives don't even bother with the pavement anyways, so F1 ain't for them, heh heh heh.

As for the alleged superiority of F1 drivers, I've personally raced against 6 of them, including F1 world champions. I sometimes beat them with 1% of their budget.

Practice time is the only "superiority" they have, due to having a dozen roadracing tracks within 3 hours of any point in Europe, with daily practice and weekly races, at prices anyone can afford. Driving 12 hours or 24 hours on the highway to a race does NOT teach racing skills, and kills budgets.

US drivers usually play in dirt, since every US town has a dirt track. That's great training for controlling slides, but almost usless in these days of robotic traction control. This is hurting MotoGP motorcycle riders like world champ Nikkie Hayden, according to his own autobiography.

The cure is every town building a paved roadracing track, as routine govt infrastructure like ballfields and streets (roads require 1,000s more miles of paving per county). This will also help cure stupid driving on the highway, since daily "racing" schools and "skid control" schools improve safety for highway drivers, as done in Europe. Sweden requires all highway drivers to get training in skid control, by sliding sideways during school. All F1 drivers start in karting, so all local tracks must include paved kart tracks for 3-year-old kids to start racin.

Another factor for poor driving in USA is the Police State, with death squads enforcing the Communist Manifesto at gunpoint, arresting all drivers for normal driving. This is not done in other nations, some of which have no speed limits. That's why I do the website for www.americanautobahn.com, as seen on History Channel at a LEGAL 212 mph on a public highway, and why I do a radio show and TV show on how to win in traffic court (de facto repeal of all stoopid traffic laws).

That's why I was a refugee who escaped USSA, lived and England for 8 years and raced 80 races on TV, LEGALLY drove 130mph for hours at a time on public highways, AND NEVER GOT A TRAFFIC TICKET NOR SAW A SPEED TRAP.

Well, I don't really like track racing myself, either. I mean, I know there's lots of strategy involved about when and how to pass, and even teamwork, but from a distance it's just cars going in a circle. I suspect most of the NASCAR fans just watch hoping for a wreck, which seems rather vulture-like and macabre to me.

It's just the way Kwicko said it, I was imagining this redneck guy somehow hitting something so the car get launched into the air, over a fence, and onto a roof, all Dukes of Hazard with a loud holler, and I thought "Wow, actually, it would be amazing to see that."

I suspect gas use and pollution for regular transportation totaled up far exceeds that for sporting cars. But even say you're looking at the whole of automobile related pollution, and you think that professional races are just 1) a waste of resources, and 2) an unnecessary polluter.

Well, I kinda see the drivers in a car race as that being their job, and I can't really justify to myself putting some kind of limit on professional drivers or other people who need cars for work, say taxi cabs and such.

Cars at the top levels of motorsports don't use "gas" like you're thinking of gas. There is some sort of bizarro witches' brew used in F1 racing - mixtures of toluene, benzene, hexane and other exotic compounds, and generally speaking, not one single drop of gasoline. Heck, most of the top motorsports have to add additives to their fuel just so it will make a visible flame if someone happens to catch on fire in the pits - otherwise, all you see is some guy dancing around like crazy, and you can't figure out why his firesuit is blackening and charring...

I concentrate on autocross, generally the bottom end of the racing heirarchy, but it's what I can afford, when I can afford even that. There's nothing quite like that feeling of spending $800 on a new set of track tires, hoping you'll get a full season out of them, and then shredding them in one day on a too-rough course. :( I run C Street Prepared and E Prepared cars. Street-Prep cars are nominally street legal, and must run DOT-approved rubber; the Prepared classes let you go a lot further in how much you prep the cars - you don't need to have windows, or even fenders, and you can run full racing slicks, open exhausts, and the like, which would never be allowed on the street. I've driven some other peoples' cars in Street Modified classes, too, which allow for aftermarket (non-stock) engine swaps, custom-geared transmissions, superchargers, turbochargers, etc.

I'm weighing my options at the moment, deciding if I want to retire my '91 CRX from street duty and make it a track car. It's got issues from when it was stolen and trashed, so I don't care for it as a daily driver anymore, but with some TLC and attention to detail in the tuning, it can be a formidable weapon of a road course. It needs to lose a few hundred pounds, though. '91s were the heaviest CRXs, but at least it doesn't have the sunroof...

Having an F1-level track nearby would make it SOOOOO much easier to justify having a race-only car. :)

Sure. And the WNBA has its fan as well, somewhere. The spectacle of the World Cup raises mild awareness, I'll admit. Mainly to see the hooligans, the brawls, and which country's fans end up whacking the goalie ( and his family ) for losing the title match.

The World Cup is bigger than the Olympics seems like, outside the states. That's something I don't mind seeing, people getting together and competing peacefully, despite politics and hostility. That's something I'd really be able to support.

I've seen some soccer teams, the good ones, it's really exciting to watch them play. I don't even understand how some of those passes are physically possible.

You're right F1 is awesome, but they didn't have that much luck selling tickets at the U.S. Grand Prix in INDY, and that's "Speedway" USA. I'll be interested how ticket sales will be were when you say "horse power" you're really talking about a horse.

A lot of em still get their start there, right along with mudboggin and other events, believe me, once you'd raced figure-eight dirt track, NASCAR ain't too scary, you know ?

I used to play in that field of battle a little, although I never was quite as good as my mother, and concentrated on some of the wilder stuff like chain-racing (boy howdy is THAT fun when it gets ugly) and Gauntlet - with a side order of demo derby, natch.

This is a chain race, basically the lead car pullin a wreck on a chain, and it can get damn interesting when the lead driver goes this way and the tail driver goes that way...

And THIS, this is Gauntlet.
They give you a car, and you gotta get it through five laps, with 4-8 other drivers cut loose onto the track who's whole job is to stop you from doin that.

This can get NASTY, folks - and I am damned, damned good at it, there's a hopped up version where they use a limo or a hearse for the gauntlet car, and I'd get picked for that a lot since I knew how to put on a good show for the crowd, driving balls out, deliberately oversteering, fishtailing, just throwin that thing around like a maniac.

NASCAR is boring though, first time someone suggested it to uncle carl, he poked one toe of his ratty old boots at the asphalt and said "Y'all RACE on this shit ?"

This is more my style, or would be if I weren't too damn old for it no more.

They are not even broadcasting any races on comercial TV. There is no interest because no drivers from the United States. I always tried to catch the Monaco GP, but that won't be aired. I remember seeing Princess Grace in the special royal family seats watching the race. It is such a short quick track with that tunnel that puts you in darkness just long enough to effect your vision when you come out to the bright sunlight.

I checked the official F1 website, and it says the fuel they use is "surprisingly close to the composition of ordinary, commercially available petrol."
It says that wasn't always the case, but it is now. Even when it wasn't the case, many engines needed to be "washed" in normal gasoline after the race, to prevent corrosion.
