Asian. White. Black. Hispanic. Do race and ethnicity matter when it comes to marriage?

Apparently, race is mattering less these days, say researchers at the Pew Research Center, who report that nearly one out of seven new marriages in the U.S. is interracial or interethnic. The report released Friday, which interviewed couples married for less than a year, found racial lines are blurring as more people choose to marry outside their race.

"From what we can tell, this is the highest [percentage of interracial marriage] it has ever been," said Jeffrey Passel, a senior demographer for the Pew Research Center.

He said interracial marriages have soared since the 1980s. About 6.8 percent of newly married couples reported marrying outside their race or ethnicity in 1980. That figure jumped to about 14.6 percent in the Pew report released this week, which surveyed newlyweds in 2008.

studies show that support for interracial marriages is stronger than in the past, especially among the Millennial generation. Among 18- to 29-year-olds, about 85 percent accept interracial marriages, according to a Pew study published in February. Scholars say interracial marriages are important to examine because they can be a barometer for race relations and cultural assimilation.

Today's growing acceptance of interracial marriages is a contrast to the overwhelming attitudes 50 years ago that such marriage was wrong -- and even illegal. During most of U.S. history, interracial marriages have been banned or considered taboo, sociologists say.

In 1958, a woman of black and Native American descent named Mildred Jeter had married a white man, Richard Loving. The couple married in Washington, D.C., instead of their home state of Virginia, where state laws outlawed interracial marriages. The couple was arrested by police. Their case made its way to the Supreme Court in the case Loving vs. Virginia in 1967, where the justices unanimously ruled that laws banning interracial marriages were unconstitutional.

Yagan attributes the increase in interracial relationships to the Internet, which makes it easier to connect with someone of a different race. People who live in a community where race is an issue can meet someone of another race more privately, than say, instead of having to start their relationship in a public setting.

"You don't have to worry about what your friends are going to think," he said. "You can build the early parts of the relationship."

My current boyfriend is half Hawaiian and half Spanish. And by Spanish I do mean that his father was from Madrid, Spain. I'm a complete American Mutt, but Spain and Hawaii are two places not in my ethnic background. (He doesn't want kids, though, so it's unlikely we'll merge genes.)
I have seen some Japanese men that just about knocked me off my feet because they were just so gorgeous. Haven't been in much of a position to marry any of them, but I wouldn't mind exploring such a possibility. (You know, when I start wanting kids and need to find a partner with a similar want.) Ditto with quite a few 'ethnic' groups. And of course anyone can have some sexy levels of intelligence. Race doesn't really hold bearing on whether I find someone attractive, personally.
I think culture and traditions, much more than race, can present a barrier between people. I'd be interested in a similar look at inter-culture marriage. Has that become more common along with inter-racial? Or are these couples meeting mostly living in the same country?

We would? I just figure we'll see only about a quarter of the population with blond hair, and a half of the population will be in between, and a quarter of the population will be darkish. It's not like the recessive genes for blond hair is going to disappear, it'll just be paired more often with a dominant expressing gene.

It's kind of like how homosexuality still gets expressed in successive generations, despite some of them not being breeders at all. Either their siblings have the gene and it's recessive or are bisexual or something, but it gets passed on and doesn't disappear. The only way you could completely get rid of a particular trait would be evolutionary bottlenecking.

The best racial determination I've ever seen is something about migration groups out of Africa, it's based entirely on genetic sub-groups. There's still some bothersome aspects where the first wave is considered "primitive" and successive waves more advanced (in every sense of the word, including intelligence). But ditch that, and you've got a perfectly reasonable categorization based on genetic similarity.

And the more we learn about neanderthals, the more we find out that they were, actually, capable of artwork, and more advanced than we thought, and all these ideas about respective intelligence of the waves are likely just so much bull dunk, proposed by people who have an agenda.

Ruhlen, Cavalli-Sforza et. al posit that the most basic split in the human family tree separates sub-saharan africans from everyone else--and this a legacy of the first major movement out of Africa. Interesting, yet subject to creepy "raciss" glosses. Fascinating stuff, even if it is essentially an unabridged history of humping.

All of us here obviously have an interest in science fiction scenarios... a while back in a purely speculative scifi vein I thought of a "what if" story scenario: what if to make the most "complete, future human" one would need to have an ancestry that touched all races and carried their unique genetic code forward? Not just any traits, but the *best* of each race - "best" being qualified by characteristics that pertain to survival - so Darwin is still the prime selector.

The STORY IDEA comes from how fitting that would seem given some of the "racial purity" extremes some people continue to have. "Not only are you wrong, but just the opposite is true: the more we mix the more we grow..."

In real life I agree with the poster that said that we'd lose variety, it'd be pretty boring if we were all were alike. Imagine a super hero league where everyone had the same costume and the same powers.

Rose (SO nice to see you “down here” more!), I put up a post about interracial marriage in reference to Muslims and Christians (which, in America at least, is a kind of black/white interracial), and it’s improving but yes, you’re right, the culture fights it still. And inter-cultural probably DOES mean when both live in the same country...I think the vast number of marriages are between people living in the same country. But nowadays every country developed country contains many cultures...in a way that means yeah, it’s not TOTALLY cross-cultural, since in the US for example, they’re all IN our culture, and however they may keep to themselves, they’re exposed to it and have to deal with it. Still, the differences between an insular Jewish culture, Muslim, Hispanic, etc., can be pretty cross-cultural nonetheless.

I would be sad to see the loss of variety mentioned, because inter-cultural or interracial marriage is bound to lose some of the tenants of each’s culture, unless one is dominant. Given enough mixing and matching, I think it’s unquestionable that cultures would weaken. Some are FORCED to give up their culture to attain an inter-cultural or interracial marriage. I think some uniformity and lack of culture has to be the result, taken far enough down the line.

I, too, don’t think we’d lose blondes, as it’s a recessive gene and I believe would pop up enough to keep them going. I would certainly hope so. Despite all the above negatives, I’m all in favor of us intermingling; there’s far too much “us/them” attitudes still remaining, and perhaps losing culture is the price we have to pay to lose racism. We’d still find a way to be prejudiced against one another, tho’, if it wasn’t race/politics/culture/religion...it’s the nature of societies, unfortunately.

Good point, the gene won't disappear so the potential will always be there, if the right two people get together. However I don't think many blacks/Asians carry the gene, so the more we intermingle the more the gene pool gets diluted, as far as blonde hair (and red) goes - and the less the chance that any two parents both have that gene, as required.

So they'll probably become rarer, if not quite extinct.
