Sounds odd to have to put it that way, but it seems there's been some misunderstanding.

There's been all manner of quite justified anger directed towards BP, and it's lies, inaction and seemingly lethargic response to the oil spill.

However, there are some folks across the pond who are having a tough time hearing all the animosity thrown around towards BP...

Quote:

"I would like to see a bit of cool heads rather than endlessly buck-passing and name-calling," said London Mayor Boris Johnson. "When you consider the huge exposure of British pension funds to BP it starts to become a matter of national concern if a great British company is being continually beaten up on the airwaves."

OK, very good points indeed. A sinking BP will have an impact on the pensions of many citizens. Fair enough. But an entire gulf coast is being destroyed here, and all the vitriol on the airwaves will be a drop in the bucket if this matter doesn't get resolved, and soon.

Americans aren't angry at the Brits.....just BP.

Now, maybe if our President hadn't sent back the bust of Sir Winston Churchill, and handed out really tacky presents ( ipods, dvd box sets that don't work in the UK ...) the tone coming from the States might be taken less harshly.

Predictably, you gotta blame Obama for something, don't you? There goes that "partisan jihad" again.

I'm truly sorry for the Brits with investments in BP...many of our pension funds are invested there too, and many Americans will suffer because of that. But to call for "cooler heads" and the sadness of "a great British company is being continually beaten up on the airwaves"...well, enuff said. I would question the "great" to begin with...

Nobody thinks BP means British people, and everyone in America has a definite right to trash BP, especially considering their CONTINUED lies and inaction.

By the way, BP received something like 760 citations for "willful egregious" violations in the last three years, so where did you get your "Bush cited them 6 times" figure? If his administration (not HIM, his administration, okay?) cited them only 6 times, then the Obama ADMINISTRATION cited them another 756 times. Just to clarify.

Niki..

I'm not BLAMING anyone for things they didn't do, am I ? All those things did happen.

Also, there is the matter of the World Cup match between the US and England.

Trust me when I say this - we don't care. It's not for lack of national pride. We have as much as anyone. Except when it comes to soccer. Y'all can take that.

Please!

British people and British Pets are the same. They are both evil. BP stands for both. What have the British done for us. We wouldn't have the Jap Jayne Fonda living in NYC if it hadn't been for the Beatles. Scouser trash all the way. Oh yeh Cadbury eggs ok then why do I have to wait till Easter. That's torcher. How about sharing some Crunchie Bars are way. You want the truth AU you can't handle the truth and here it is. Straight from the English King of BP.

Cat, I will refrain from what my instincts make me want to do. It's obvious from your post that you are not of intellectual weight to have a debate with, so I will just say something you can possibly understand and let it go at that:

And your point ? He did exactly all that I said he did. That's not debatable.

It's even been brought up in the British press.....

Quote:

London newspapers are howling over a string of alleged snubs by Obama to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown during his visit to Washington last week — including a squabble over presidential gift-giving.

"President Obama has been rudeness personified towards Britain," sniffed The Daily Telegraph Friday. "His handling of the visit of the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, to Washington was appalling."

The list of complaints is longer than the Magna Carta: Obama canceled a planned, podium-to-podium news conference with Brown (actually, none was ever scheduled); he recently removed a bust of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill from the Oval Office; and he gave gifts to the Brown family that were "about as exciting as a pair of socks," one Fleet Street wag whined.

That last bit might be true. After Brown presented Obama with a pen holder crafted from the timbers of the 19th century British warship HMS President (whose sister ship, HMS Resolute, provided the wood for the Oval Office's desk), Obama offered up ... 25 DVDs of American movie classics.

"Oh, give me strength," wrote one appalled Daily Telegraph staffer. "We do have television and DVD stores on this side of the Atlantic."

Never mind that Brown is blind in one eye and may have a hard time seeing the stars in "2001: A Space Odyssey," or that American DVDs are usually incompatible with British players.

Equally insulting, decided the Times of London, was Michelle Obama's "solipsistic" and "inherently dismissive" gifts to the Browns' two little boys, Fraser and John.

The offending souvenirs? Toy models of Marine One, the President's helicopter — gifts no doubt plucked from the White House gift shop at the last minute, The Times decided.

Brown's wife, Sarah, by contrast arrived with dresses for Sasha and Malia from the UK's trendy Top Shop (with matching necklaces) and a selection of books by British authors.

"A bit of thought had clearly gone into choosing them," crowed The Daily Mail. "Lovely."

The Brits have blown up the alleged snubs into new evidence that the "special relationship" between the two nations is no longer quite so special.

The hand-wringing began last month when Obama removed a bust of Churchill from the Oval Office and replaced it with his hero, Abraham Lincoln.

The Times of London immediately traced Obama's "disdain" for Churchill to Kenya, where Obama's grandfather was caught up in the Churchill-led suppression of the 1950s Mau Mau Rebellion that left thousands of
Kenyans dead.

"It's not surprising that Mr. Obama didn't want Churchill looking over his shoulder," explained one correspondent.

At this point, the two sides seem to be in full repair mode. The White House let it be known that Obama and Brown shared a chummy phone call as the prime minister was headed home.

Was it really necessary for me post that ? C'mon.

DREAMTROVE

It's fair.

Niki, you weren't here for it, but the left pounced on Bush instantly over Katrina, this is pretty much the same sort of anger: No one thinks he caused it, but they're upset at his not doing anything.

As for the poor diplomacy, it's just one of the subjects, like economics, that happen to not be the president's strong points.

I mean, Yes, Churchill cracked down on the Mau Mau, but that's small potatoes compares to his other sins. How about the sins of Lincoln, who killed a million of his own people? Well, every southern president has had to drive by his giant enthrone statue a la saddam hussein every day. Yes, in diplomacy, you don't let your personal feelings show. It was a fuck up.

As for BP, I agree, they're not Britain. BP was a total dick, and still is, but so is Halliburton, and so is Transocean. We need a lot of accountability here, not just one, but no one gets a free pass. Same as in Katrina. Nagin, clearly, was the most to blame, for refusing to evacuate. Blanco was to blame for not fixing where Nagin failed, and Bush was to blame for not fixing where Blanco failed. Clearly we need some major overhaul of the way we do things. Oh, MMS and whoever appoints them has a lot to answer for also. Anyone know how this works?

Also, Niki, are they letting you in to help? what's going on down there? also, where exactly are you?

I was snarking at the crack that if none of those things had happened, our anger at BP might be taken less personally in Britain. That's ridiculous...they'd react to all they're hearing exactly the same whether there were diplomatic faux pas or not. That's all. Obama just seemed to HAVE to come into it, when it's not about Obama at all, it's about Americans being pissed at a British COMPANY.

American pension funds, too. Apparently it has almost exactly as many American shareholders as British.

It is an international oil company, after all.

As far as I've heard, nobody is angry at the British people. Most of us - the Supreme Court notwithstanding - realize that a corporation isn't the people, and doesn't speak for them.

Of course, then I remember "Freedom Fries", and I despair...

But really, how pathetic is it that we actually have to even post up something about how we really, really, REALLY don't hate the British. Well, except for PN and Wulf; they definitely hate the Brits. But real Americans don't. :)

Hello,

I was mad at the British for that 1812 incursion and White House burning thing, but then I got over it 100 years before I was born.

It's soccer. Americans love a winner, not 90 minutes of running around that ends in a 1-1 tie.

*edit* ROFLOL! I had no idea that the inaugural match, between S.Africa and Mexico, did indeed in in a 1-1 tie.

Too gorram hi-larious!

But, but, but.... the Brits are the best!

They are the example that America should follow!

Government controls everything over there!

Guns, money, healthcare and oil companies!

Don't WE want to be like them?

I know this because Obama and his crew tells me so!

(Whistling....as I laugh at the massacre in Cumbria, and as the parliment seeks to distance themselves from BP... not to mention Obama and Emmanuel...)

What ya think of this dude Tony Hayward just brit face boy. He is not the real power behind BP. That London mayor worried about pensions. Corporations are cutting experienced people, lack of training for keeping the standards high, and plain safety disregards for the bottom line.
