I can't stop laughing at how many makers are trying to catch up to where the iPhone is. It is to phones what Windoze™ is to computers. Doesn't have to be "the best" or "the fastest" (Windows has never been either); it has the installed user base, the name recognition, and the apps.

'Course, then there's my Verizon LG phone, which says it can play music. If I buy it on Verizon's music site. Not compatible with my 30+Gb of iTunes...

I like that the iPhone can communicate easily with my Mac, my laptop, my wireless network, the iPad I don't have yet, etc. And I like that it can act as my GPS/nav system, my bike training computer, fitness monitor, etc., as well. No need to punch in my route or mount it to the bike - just put it in your pocket and ride, and it will map your route, your average speed, time elapsed, top speed, and so on - and it will save that info so you can compete against yourself later.

I like that even my little iPod can show me which constellations are visible tonight, where to find them, and how they'll look relative to the horizon.

Mostly, I like being immune to computer viruses. :)

I really dont care about I-whatevers. Im not exactly the biggest tech-head.

However, I did enjoy the frustration with people who MUST own the latest gadget or hip new thing.

What? Does your X-box, Playstation, Iphone, Ipad (who really came up with that name?) make you feel more "arrived"?

Its the whole, "I must have the newest, latest, biggest thing" and the annoyance at it that I enjoy.

STEGASAURUS

I have an iPad. Albeit only with WiFi. I just don't need the added bills with the 3G model. I can tell you that my purpose for getting it wasn't simply because it was the latest greatest thing, but simply because I can carry it around at work, logging all of the work that I do directly into our ticket system.

Add to that the constant questions of my coworkers asking how my son is doing, I can just show them the latest pictures. It's lighter than any laptop/netbook I've ever dealt with, so it's far easier to take everywhere I go (at work or at home).

I can honestly say that I use my laptop 60% to 70% less than I used to, and I save a ton of money on the cost of electricity to recharge/run the iPad as compaired to my Dell Insperion 1545.

Just thought I'd share!

And then there's this...

Quote:

Microsoft to kill off Kin messaging phones

In a stunningly swift about-face, Microsoft has reportedly decided to stick a fork in its youth-oriented Kin messaging phones, not even two months after the handsets went on sale and just two days after Verizon slashed prices on the devices.
Microsoft will cease development on the phones, instead focusing its energies on its upcoming Windows Phone 7 handsets, according to CNET's Ina Fried, who adds that Microsoft has nixed the Kin's planned debut in Europe.

In a statement to CNET, Microsoft confirmed that the development team behind the Kin will be folded into the Windows Phone 7 group. That said, Microsoft will "continue to work with Verizon in the U.S. to sell current Kin phones."

Somehow, I predict that the iPhone will probably still be around in two months. Microsoft's latest? Who knows?

Microsoft is in the process of folding. They're killing all projects. They will soon make nothing. I think they are trying to reduce to a brand, a fanchise, and then become some sort of service business. Probably a large amount of financial research went into that.

Totally agreed. I drove past a huge line of people waiting for the 4g iphone, and couldn't help thinking it was a line made up entirely of douchebags.

Did any of the really NEED it that badly the moment it hits the shelves?

I don't get the standing-in-line-for-the-latest-gadget mentality either. I'm not real big on early adoption of the latest technology as a rule, because I'm not too keen on standing in line and paying extra to be one of the company's guinea pigs and find all the glitches first. I prefer to wait until the bugs are ironed out. :)

And the new iPhone DOES have some issues. Google "iphone grip of death".

But, like it or not, it's driving the market now. Every cell maker is trying like hell to keep pace with iPhone, to catch up, to offer something that will catch on the way it has. If the hardware isn't the best on the market, the software and the design/ergonomics certainly seem to be the envy of every manufacturer in the market.

Mike

The apple business model works in the current market environment. If didn't for years, but it does now. I'm not sure anything else is going on.

Here's how it works and why I'm reading up on iPad development.

1) apple established a dedicated user base by selling to art communities and educational institutions. This is a program they started thirty years ago, and it failed for decades, but now it's paying off.

2) apple can and does limit the app development and avaliability. This makes for a successful market for app ddevelopers who get in. The fact that apple sells out to big money concerns means that their selection of apps for sale is junk heavy. I'm referring to stuff like An app for Tine magazine etc. Which I haven't used, but theres tons of that stuff. Time magazine is not app material, its text. I want to read time the same way I read everything else, I want all the features to be identical to the mach ester guardian. In short, I want it to be a web page. I don't want it taking up space on my desktop.

3) the limited app market is far more limited than it looks like, because of this, figure there are a few thousand actual apps. That means that this is a seriously doomed market moddl, and when droid has more apps, it will have better apps, and will take over the market. But for now it means that the few people producing really good apps have access to a very large audience.

4) being able to sell apps to a very large audience means you csn make apps really cheap and still make money doing it. As a result, a wide array of high functioning apps can be bought for fairly little money.

5) the art student nature of the population makes everything look nice. There are lots of spiffy interface things going on as a result of years of mac dev, and even if the result is slower than the competition, it feels more natural.

6) the fact that apple has overcharged for everything means that the mac people are over income on balance, and are used to oaring through the nose, unlike the linux market, who now have droids, who are used to getting everything for free.

7) the app store model is pretty brilliant. By tying peoples payment scheme directly into the OS they made it so that there's no real resistance to buying. The general human resistance to making a purchase is not the buck they sound but the forms of personal information they fill out. All the rigamarole associated with going to a store, putting money down, also makes you think more about what your doing. Plain old barriers to purchase.

8) since apple gives you a chance to capture a large paying audience, it makes sense to develop for apple first, giving the apple the technological edge.

I don't know how long it will last, but I'm planning in taking advantage of it now.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

All-Linux here. Next phone will be a Droid. I'm very angry that Apple chooses to be so fucking closed with its apps, and locks you out of all the freeware out there, and INTO the digital millenium copyright act with their Digital Restrictions (er... RIGHTS) Management.

BTW- Apple stole the operating system. Used to be BSD... Berkeley Software Distribution, a freeware Unix... then they appropriated it to make a ton of money. The developers should have put it under a General Public License, then they wouldn't have had their software stolen out from under them.

But that seems to be an issue with people... they will kick and bitch about government control of their lives, and then willingly shackle themselves into a corporate jail.

Jeeze Sig, I was arguing against the culture of owning the latest "gadget" as a means of self fulfillment.

You just HAD to take the corporate route tho..

Its given me something to think about tho..

Seriously Mike the iPhone is in no way ground breaking. Apple's only advantage is it's quite brilliant marketing department, and it's fan base who seem to often see Apple as some sort of religion.

Neither does Linux. I'd like to point one thing out, Linux is the most secure operating system in widespread use, the Pwn2Own Hackers convention, to my knowledge has never managed to hack Linux, but both Windows and Mac OSX have been

And to really twist the knife, don't forget that Apple would have folded if it weren't for one Bill Gates...

I was in charge of the IT for the Bloody Sunday Inquiry until recently. Finished dismantling the systems yesterday. They had one G5 PowerMac that was going to end up in a skip, so I gently informed them I could recycle it free of charge...

Had to destroy the hard drive, so no OS, and frankly I find it disgusting that Apple no longer sell an OS that can run on it. No harm though, it's currently busy installing Yellow Dog Linux PowerPC edition. Going to put it through it's paces and see how it compares to my three year old Intel Xeon Workstation.
