a flimsy piece of junk that throws a little bitsy .223 round is 'big' ?
thats news to me, especially since it is based on a loading system no one with any sense uses because it fouls its own chamber.

Uggh.

Im on the fence. I want a ar15, with the new blowback system... but the 556 round is weak! But its all over the place.

In case of a zombie apocolypse.... you could find a 556 round better than an Ak 7.whatever.

Im digging the new 6.8 tho... but thats even more rare...

Thanks for sayin' it, Frem. I was about to ask, since when is a .22 considered your "BIG" gun?

5.56 & .223 are getting to be quite pricey, while 5.45x39 (AK74) and 7.62x39 (AK47) are, even after that last few years of shortages, still less than $0.25/round. I buy 'em by the thousand, and ALWAYS keep at least a couple thousand extra on hand. And those calibers are manufactured by the billions, all over the world. More armies use the 7.62x39mm round than any other, anywhere.

In case of Zombie 'Pocksalips, I'm thinkin' I'll be okay. :P

If you really want an AR platform, you can always go with the .50BMG. It definitely qualifies as "big". :)

A buddy of mine just built his AR, and it's pretty sweet for what it is. He went with what's called an AR-57 upper, which uses the FN Herstal 5.7 round and magazine, which is a top-loading 50-round mag (it lays along the top of the barrel, and ejects spent cases downward through the mag well.

I say it's pretty sweet, in that we were both able to hold 1.5" groups at 50 yards with it in quick-fire mode. The recoil is so minimal that you reacquire the target in less than two seconds, putting lots of metal on the target very quickly, AND amazingly accurately.

The downside is, it jammed. Of course. Twice. And it took both of us and a hammer to get it UNjammed. In other words, on a battlefield, we'd both have been dead.

I was quite impressed with the accuracy, much less so with the reliability. That seems to be the story of the AR's life...

Oh, and Wulfie, in the spirit of camaraderie, I'd say look into a Saiga 7.62x39mm. I just got an e-mail notification that Mississippi Auto Arms has them down to $299 each right now. I've had mine since the mid 90's, poured THOUSANDS of rounds through it, and it has yet to fail me. It's rugged as hell, it's so cheap you don't even have to take care of it, and it generally works BETTER when it loosens up. Accuracy is... meh. I can put a man down at over a hundred yards with it quite easily, even on iron sights, which is good enough for government work.

AR's are pretty, but I'll keep my Saiga in my trunk. :)

Uggh. the 5.7 round? You mean this pitiful thing?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FN_P90

No thanks, thats like betting your life on the 9mm.

Whenever I think of fighting the ZA... its always against a 350-300ln guy, cracked out, having to have BRAAIIINNNS.

In that scenario... nothing less thatn a .40 will do. Or, in rifle... MAYBE 556.

Yup, that's the round. Not one of my personal favorites (again, PRICEY, and not all that easy to find at Wally World). But that Nadal Hassan guy did pretty good with his FN 5-7 at Fort Hood against trained soldiers, didn't he? Just sayin', it sure SEEMS deadly enough. ;)

I'll bet my life on my trusty 9mm any day. Frangible ammo is a force multiplier. :)

If you like the AR style platform but want more power just save a few more pennies and get an AR10. You just can't beat the 7.62x51 NATO/308 Win. A 223 might be fine for killing Zombies, but if you decide to go Deer hunting you need something bigger. Don't let anyone talk you out of the AR, especially AK guys. The AR is every bit as reliable if you keep it clean. If you plan on crawling through mud a lot then get an AK, if not just clean your AR every time you use it and make sure you only use lubricants that are approved for long term storage of AR type weapons. I really like the products made by Break Free.

Good point. My buddy Dave runs his Saiga12 with alternating rounds: birdshot, buckshot, slug, repeat. :)
