Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I find this disturbing, and hope it is not successful. I feel badly for people who feel they may be under the barrel of some kind of coordinated smear campaign, but that doesn't give them the right to violate everyone's privacy.

From the article:

"The subpoenas stem from a state lawsuit filed by New York residents Miriam and Michael Hersh alleging a conspiracy to interfere with their business interests. Issued to Google and Yahoo, the subpoenas demand the identities of users of ten email accounts, operators of 30 blogs and a website that had featured discussions of the plaintiffs among other matters, and the identities of everyone who had ever commented on those sites."

Anyone who loves the free atmosphere of the internet in general and the U.S. freedom of speech in particular should be mortified by these kinds of things.

Due to the use of Naomi 3.3.2 Beta web filtering, the following people may need to private-message me if they wish to contact me: Auraptor, Kaneman, Piratenews. I apologize for the inconvenience.

STORYMARK

I think anonymity online has led to a degradation in discourse, and I don't mind people taking responsibility for their words.

"I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him."

Hello,

Since that message wasn't signed, "Marcus Cole, 2254 NE 2nd St, Lake Oswald, WI 32309", I'll assume you're just being ironical.

FREMDFIRMA

This is like trying to outlaw flatulence.

Sure, you can make a law, you can pretend like you're doing something, but the actual mechanics of physical reality will more or less laugh you off.

All this will do is put money in the pockets of foreign proxy providers who already make a good chunk shielding smarter whistle blowers by being outside of the american authoritarian jackboots range.

And if you think anonymity doesn't have a good and useful purpose on the net - consider this, what if you had your political party and who you voted for stamped on your forehead, given the viciousness, the hatefulness, and insanity, of the partisan divide in this country ?

Now, think of WHY people like that (which is prettymuch who are behind this push) wanting to know WHO YOU ARE, and WHERE YOU LIVE.

And this is a topic imma real hardcase about, ever since some punk managed to convince an AOL customer service rep he was a lawyer with important papers to serve, obtained my address, and hit my HOME with a fucking molotov cocktail, which thankfully fell a bit short and was suppressed by me flinging pitchers of water out the kitchen window and a neighbor with his garden hose.

And why ?
Cause I made a snide comment at him online - and so he comes in the dead of night and tries to firebomb my house, thus trying to keep HIS identity secret while committing ACTUAL violence against me.

Cause that's what this shit is, the same as cops don't like YOU filming THEM, they want it all one way, their way, and they can go fuck themselves.

Consider well what we do to whistleblowers in the country, when you speak of taking responsibility for such - consider well how these laws never seem to apply to astroturfing politicos, or dirty alphabet agency business, or any of the faceless hordes behind a corporate or religious agenda.

DREAMTROVE

I think anonymity should be expanded to include everything.

The thing which strikes me about correlation of data on citizens is that it ultimately leads to fascism. The best thing for everyone is if the data simply doesn't exist.

If there was never information on who was jewish, than the role of jews would not have been suspect in WWI, which would not have led to a list of jews in WWII, which would have not led to the holocaust.

Sure, there's useful data, but it can be gotten in a non-intrusive way. If the actions of jews *were* responsible for WWI, then those *actions* could have been targeted, resulting in some sort of reform, even if the identity of the actors was never known.

As for comments, it doesn't really bother me that River has 7 used IDs.
