I get a chuckle at how the old guard feminists are all fussy over how 'liberated' their modern day counter parts have become. The " do - me " feminists is what they call them, I believe.

Rush Limbaugh had it right, when he said that feminism was started to give ugly chicks a chance.

But when the girls are hot, and they want to do as they please ? That's not what the N.O.W. gals had in mind.

Just this week, meatpuppet Bill O'Reilly went on a rant about Jennifer Aniston sending a "terrible message" because she said it's not the worst thing in the world to be a single mother without a man in the picture.

I'm not sure who you are talking about. A lot of politicians have daughters, I'm fairly certain that at some point those daughters have sex.

I don't think the mere act of having sex or getting a disease or getting pregnant makes you a slut. I think whether or not a person, male or female, is a slut is a reflection of the behavior and their character.

So if you have an accusation to make against someone in particular, an accusation based on a pattern of behavior or an obvious failing of their character...make it.

See that magazine in the hands of the girl on the right?

That's the biggest reason why. That, and television following a trend. Now that it's acceptable, hot young things in skimpy outfits attract the young male demographic and serve as role models for young girls more than their parents ever could.

I don't particularly care. It's their business. I just wish the girls with big cleavage would cover up more, very distracting.

Oh yes, I long for the good old days pre feminism, when you had no choice but to stay at home, have babies and put up with whatever shit your husband threw at you. Oh and less pay for the same work, that was great too. Oh yes, and having to quit work because you were married, that was great as well. Not being able to complain or prosecute when you were beaten by your husband, they weres the good times. And not voting, not having a political voice that was fab. Not being able to own or inherit property, lets bring that great law back. Not having access to contraception until you were married - that was fun as well. What great ol days THEY were. yep, it was really fair that women were precluded from being treated as human - because, you know, having breasts and vagina really means that you aren't.

Yeah, DAMN those hairy armpitted feminists for not living up the the beauty ideals of the wondrous men that are (if they are men) Wulf and PN and their ilk

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Yay Magons! I always considered myself SO lucky to be born when I was! I was born in 1948, so wasn't a teenager until the '60s. But I saw my mom--who worked, but at that time it wasn't very common. Mom didn't do the dressed-to-the-nines-for-when-hubby-gets-home bit, but by the time I was old enough, I knew what I was seeing.

Mom was ahead of her time. She'd worked all her life, even through two marriages, had to have an abortion when younger, was divorced, and didn't fit the mold of the '50's woman at all.

But I had a poodle skirt, we had a "too-short" and skirt dress code in school for the girls, if you had sex before marriage you were in danger of being called a slut, no-fault divorce didn't exist yet, women made FAR less than men and were limited in what jobs they could take, it was damned hard to prosecute a husband for "rape", there weren't many shelters (if any) for battered women, and most people went to church and/or were involved in church activities (despite getting drunk and/or beating their wives the rest of the week).

You've never seen a hot feminist?? I seem to recall one or two of you guys saying you thought I was "hot" at 26. There's your example. I could post pix of some of my friends in the '60s who were just as hot if not moreso who were feminists, too.

ETA: Is that pic "Murphy Brown"? She and the baby are both actors, you know, if it is!

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Furry legs ? Don't forget arms, armpits, head, and nethers. Yep, women are biological beings with human genetics that cause them to be that way. And not only do women have hair, they eat, fart, pee, poop, sweat, cry, sniffle, spit, and occasionally menstruate, give birth and suckle their young.

So what exactly are you complaining about Rap ? That women are real ? That they are biological creatures ? What, exactly offends you about actual humans ?

Oh, if only y'all could live in a world where you could demean women free of guilt or censure! What is wrong with you louts that you feel so put upon by women just trying to get some respect?

It's inhumane, disgusting, and shows an utter ignorance of historical reality. Like gloating over segregation and making fun of Fredrick Douglas. And all this puerile rot about all feminists being ugly--if that isn't neanderthal, I'd like to know what you think qualifies?

I would love to see the men who complain about female body hair try and remove all of theirs on a regular basis, do it so neatly it seems natural and constantly worry about stubble, from their earliest teens on for the rest of their lives at the threat of being shamed as disgusting otherwise.

Never mind the razor cuts, the pain of ripping hair out, the burns from improperly handled hot wax, the mess of ingrown hairs or itching from it growing back, or the masses of money spent on having it all done professionally...

I think some men have no idea how unnatural and extreme a cultural force this actually is.

As for blaming feminism for.. everything? Convenient, coming either from the gender who never had to endure the life of a woman pre-feminism if the men in her life weren't inclined to be kind to her - or from women enjoying the fruits of feminist labor today by exercising the CHOICE to lead a certain lifestyle rather than being forced into it for lack of options. Heaven beware other women making other CHOICES. Must put an end to that. They really don't know what's good for them, so why give them the freedom to decide?

Lighten up.. good grief.

1. "Oh yes, I long for the good old days pre feminism, when you had no choice but to stay at home, have babies and put up with whatever shit your husband threw at you."

Yeah, because having children, taking care of them, providing a nice safe, comfortable home for your family is SOOOOOO awful.

2. "Oh and less pay for the same work, that was great too."

What work? You just said every woman was at home. But I agree that taking care of a family is a hard job. Stay at home moms can never get enough credit in my book.

AND, I don't think there were a lot of male secretaries back in the day, so how can you be sure you were doing the same work for less pay?

3."Oh yes, and having to quit work because you were married, that was great as well."

I think that was more of an inter-familial decision.

4. "Not being able to complain or prosecute when you were beaten by your husband, they weres the good times."

You could complain, but most people didn't want to get involved in domestic disputes. But this I agree with. A woman has the right to seek police and lawful help. Provided that the woman truly IS being abused.

5. "And not voting, not having a political voice that was fab. Not being able to own or inherit property, lets bring that great law back. Not having access to contraception until you were married - that was fun as well."

Well... ok.

As you are so passionate about these things... I think N.O.W. and all the rest of the feminist organizations should go to places like Africa, and the Middle East.

There, women really ARE property.

Let me know how that turns out.

MmmmKay?

How is it that whenever women point out the how rubbish the demonization of feminism is they always get told to "lighten up"?

Silly, uptight women defending the movement that gave them equal rights and fair treatment and choices. Just laugh it off when someone tries to denigrate those accomplishments! Why DO you take that stuff so seriously, anyway? And you really have no right to complain, after all, you could be someplace where it's much worse, so you should really be thankful for not being property anymore and just shuttup when someone else blames feminism for the world's ills.

It's not demonization. It's backlash from whenever people DO take it too seriously, and start calling everyone who disagrees with them a neanderthal.

I agree with you on all points, but the neanderthal thing is just ad hominem attacks, and does nothing to further justify or validate your position. It just pisses people off, and comes off as belligerent, and dare I say, militant, which is why you were then attacked with accusations of not shaving and other now-symbolic representations of militant feminism.

I credit feminism with allowing me to be like one of the boys, instead of forcing me to go along with all sorts of double standards bullshit, but people need to knock off the disdain towards acting and being like one of the boys. It's a personal attack on me and MY lifestyle.

EDIT: What most of the guys here hate is man-hating. They don't give a good damn either way really if you or any other woman works or votes or owns property, fact is you can and do, and they've moved past it. But you girls haven't, and you don't show them respect, so why should they show you respect? You accuse them of some evil straw man wife beating, and they just grin and play it up back to you because it winds you up.

As to equal pay, that’s been documented out the ying-yang, so why go there? Having to quite work to raise a family was almost all the time not a “inter-family decision”. It’s was a societal imperative.
Quote:

So women have no right to try and make their lives and the lives of other women better in their own country, obviously. Many, many organizations of women DO work toward equality in other countries, but according to you they should go there and stop bothering America about equal rights, yes?

Byte, some historical perspective. Society, and especially as represented by TV, for most of history cast the woman almost exclusively the dumb homemaker, victim, etc. which stands helpless and lets a man protect her. That has reversed in recent years, with now the male often being portrayed as the dumb, ineffective, powerless husband and women more and more as strong, self-confident protagonists not needing the protection of a man. Neither one is totally accurate; neither one is fair; but the pendulum swings and, while I wish it weren’t so and think it’s about time to stop, I think the female sex has had the right to a different portrayal by society for a while.

Uh... How so? Even our genitalia is analogous, with the penis being converted from the clitoris, and the ovaries being analogous to the testes. The only difference really is size and location and where the tubes go. If you're meaning the pregnancy, there's been recent advancements in the field of male pregnancy that makes this no longer completely accurate that we're so very different, though a better option is of course artificial wombs being researched.

Now, you might be able to argue something about grey and white matter in the brains, or about muscle mass versus body fat, but there's arguments about whether that's genetic or developmental, and we don't have any idea what the grey-matter/white-matter thing functionally means.

Maybe a better argument would be on the genetic level, the X and Y chromosome have genes activated differently in men and women, so differences there are calculated at about 2%, more even than the difference between humans and chimpanzees, but those differences are still arguably less about functionality and more about things like chemical resistances and genetic disorders.

Measurably, when we're talking about things like job capability or domestic capability, these are trained skills, and less so much genetic, and there should be no differences beyond cultural influence.

I said I thought it was a shame the pendulum is still swinging in the direction it is, Byte. To me, it's also natural human behavior; TV and movies reflect what's happening in the world mostly.

Where do you get the idea I'm "pushing" the pendulum in any direction? I don't want it swinging EITHER way, I was merely pointing out historical facts. And I said, you'll note, that I thought females HAD a right to swing it in the other direction. That should have passed long ago, as far as I'm concerned. I don't like seeing either sex being degraded or portrayed as stupid.

Wulf, what in hell does men and women being different have to do with the fact that, if raising a family is such a wonderful thing, men should enjoy it too? Are you saying women are the only ones who can raise a family? That men "shouldn't" be doing so? Many are these days, if you hadn't noticed. Your statement that the sexes are different has nothing to do with the equation.

The differences between the sexes is something society created and enforced. It's not that way in other cultures. Your argument is fallible.

A woman's body hair is no less pleasant than the rest of her--no need to distinguish between shades of pitch black. Plus, men are better at being hairy, any way.

And Nikki, you're rad, and I say this as a brutish knuckle dragger with a terminal case of testosterone, but society did not invent the differences between boys and girls. It may formalize and enforce them, but to argue that men and women are fundamentally identical is contrary to human experience.

Media != valid scientific source.

Also, many of these psychological studies are flawed in that they use both a small sample size and a sample from only one culture to draw conclusions.

Thinking differently has a lot to do with societal influences, and less so much genetics. If you want to argue ACTUAL differences, we can do so, but the tangible measurable differences are along the lines I've already mentioned, and have nothing to do with domestic capability.

And Nikki, you're rad, and I say this as a brutish knuckle dragger with a terminal case of testosterone, but society did not invent the differences between boys and girls. It may formalize and enforce them, but to argue that men and women are fundamentally identical is contrary to human experience.

I probably shouldn't be one to talk about broad generalizations, but... There really isn't a common human experience we can define, any more than there is a common human nature.

If you have observations and impressions one way or another, you need to ask yourself if they are the product of the expectations and social biases of your culture. Because this aspect can vary across human populations, I'd argue that it IS mostly bias and expectation. If there were a distinct trend one way, you would see far less variation.

No, it's kind of nice. I've done it. But it was a CHOICE that I could make. just like the choice to have a career.

Quote:

2. What work? You just said every woman was at home. But I agree that taking care of a family is a hard job. Stay at home moms can never get enough credit in my book.

No, I said every MARRIED woman was at home. Women who worked at the same job as men were paid less, but I guess you don't know about that nice little part of history.

Quote:

AND, I don't think there were a lot of male secretaries back in the day, so how can you be sure you were doing the same work for less pay?

Because women also worked in as doctors, teachers, factories and other jobs along side men. Your knowledge of history, even recent history is pretty poor.

Quote:

3."Oh yes, and having to quit work because you were married, that was great as well."

I think that was more of an inter-familial decision.

No, that was pretty standard. Married women were expected to leave work and many companies would not continue to employ married women. The public sector here had a marriage bar. My Grandmother was a teacher, who did actually work after she was married, but she was never allowed to be employed permanently. She was always a 'temp' which meant her pay and conditions were always considerably lower than a man's. Oh and they only employed her because she worked in iscolated country schools. A bit like during and after WW2. when it was convenient for women to work, they were allowed, but after the war, it was back to the kitchen.

Quote:

4. "Not being able to complain or prosecute when you were beaten by your husband, they weres the good times."

You could complain, but most people didn't want to get involved in domestic disputes. But this I agree with. A woman has the right to seek police and lawful help. Provided that the woman truly IS being abused.

Actually, you were pretty much protected by law as the husband. It was a patriarchy, remember. Conjugal rights and so on. A lot of police would not attend to domestic 'disputes' and if they did, they responded in a patriarchial manner - 'quit your whinging love, and try not to antagonise him when his drunk.." Sheesh even I remember those times.

I'm glad you agree with me about the voting thing, but don't forget that the women who fought for the vote were villified, persecuted and mocked for their role in that. They were considered a threat to society, family values, the sanctity of the role of women in society.

Quote:

As you are so passionate about these things... I think N.O.W. and all the rest of the feminist organizations should go to places like Africa, and the Middle East.

There, women really ARE property.

Let me know how that turns out.

As it turns out there are plenty of organisations who support women's overseas.

I can feel passionately about what I want where I want and I don't have to answer to you, and one of the things that does bug me is mindless feminism bashing and all because they didn't shave their fucking legs. Geez. How shallow.

NB Calling you guys neanderthals is an insult to neanderthals.

Geez, Byte. You're the one who goes on about stuff that supports the status quo. Well how about this, without people being passionate and difficult and some pretty heavy handed attacks, then the status quo continues to exist. DO you think that women would have gained what they had gained without the full on radical, man hating, bra burning feminists? If you want to change stuff, really change it, you have to go in pretty hard, and keep at it hard.

I might not agree with a lot of that stuff that went on back then, but I see that it shook stuff up that needed to be shaken up. That's what all the most radical feminist stuff was about.

Back then, they had plenty of justification. As I said, I'm grateful because the feminist movement allows me to be what I am (mostly. Rejecting male-female double standards when people have attempted to apply them to me has been a struggle on it's own, but a personal struggle).

Maybe some people still see justification now, or feel like if they let any tiny comment go now, there'll be a sudden slide back into the way things were.

I don't feel that way. Rather, I feel that modern feminism has been turned into yet another divisive wedge issue and doesn't have any real goal anymore.

Jew Gloria Steinem's first career was a CIA agent. Everything else was just following orders from kosher Big Brother.

Rap ...

I hate to tell you this but ...

... this is a shaved, scrubbed, bleached, enhanced, made-up, primped, vanity-lighted, posed, airbrushed, digitally-modified, selected image that even the real version wouldn't stand up to in a face to face comparison, let alone day to day.

If you need this kind of never-to-be-attained fantasy to get it on - presumably with yourself - there's something wrong with you, boy.
