Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I was quite a big fan of hers before she got together with Tom. She had a potentially promising career going for her.
I don't have the problem with him like some people do, he can go on about Scientology all he likes and it makes him no worse than all the other religious crackpots out there. And he has made some decent movies over his career in amongst the rubbish. I never really fell into all that 'brainwashing' crap either that the media was pushing when they got together. Just seemed like talk from other religions to discredit Scientology when they are all as bad as each other and all feature variations on brainwashing.

But if what she's saying has truth to it and it isn't just the usual 'Hollywood Luvvie' talk, then it explains a lot.
She's starstruck in a big way and has been since the start, which is sort of like self-brainwashing. Like it or not he's one of the biggest movie stars on the planet and she may have already been a fan before they met. If he started showing you attention, and assuming you were female, would you really turn him down? I know if it was one of the actresses I like (and I was single) I wouldn't. I'd go for it and make the best of it I could.
Of course it could be just the usual gumbo. How many times have we heard star couple say that they've met their soulmates and that this is the one to last forever, only for it to end a while later.

I think Tom Cruise has proved to be a good actor in numerous roles, and whenever I can shake the image of his RL convictions out of my mind, I enjoy his characters a great deal. I don't see anything wrong with asking a successful, veteran actor for acting tips.

On the issue of scientology, I have read their Old Testament document 'Dianetics.' Many of their processes to 'clear' the subconscious of negative programming bear a striking similarity to hypnotism. Since they themselves readily acknowledge that hurtful things can inhabit the subconscious and force bad behavior, you don't even have the kindly assurance that the near-hypnotism can't hurt you. (Though they will express this, no doubt, after telling you all the ways you can collect destructive triggers without even trying.)

I leave it to the individual to determine how comfortable they are with someone tinkering about in their brain.

Well, I know it's popular to bash him now, especially amongst women (why jumping on a couch was so horrendous, I don't understand), but the dude has one of the most successful acting careers in the history of said career, and has some exceptional, Oscar-nominated performances under his belt (along with, granted, a lot of just-being-him movie star-ism).

So, saying HE doesn't have a clue... is kinda clueless in and of itself.

Sure, he hold some views I think are crazy, but that puts him in company with a good 2/3rds of the world, and has no bearing on how I view his work.

Of course they do actual brainwashing! They're a religion, aren't they?

I think Tom's batshit crazy, and any more I can rarely get past his face on the screen; him being in a movie just tends to take me out of the movie, because I keep going, "Oh, look - it's Tom Cruise!" Still, he HAS been in some decent stuff, and he can act. Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men - he's got some skills. Oh, and what about Tropic Thunder? I didn't even realize 'til near the end of the movie that it was him!
