White House strikes back at 'Muslim' tag
Posted: August 19th, 2010 02:26 PM ET

From CNN White House Correspondent Dan Lothian

The White House on Thursday responded to new polls which indicate Americans do not know what religion President Obama practices.
Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts (CNN) - The White House is responding to new polls Thursday that show an increasing number of Americans believe that President Obama is a Muslim.

"President Obama is a committed Christian, and his faith is an important part of his daily life," Deputy White House Communications Director Jen Psaki told CNN. "He prays every day, he seeks a small circle of Christian pastors to give him spiritual advice and counseling, he even receives a daily devotional that he uses each morning. The President's Christian faith is a part of who he is, but not a part of what the public or the media is focused on everyday."

Psaki added that "the President's strong Christian faith is what guides him through the challenges – a recovering economy, bringing troops home from Iraq, putting healthcare and financial reform implementation in place - but he doesn't wear it on his sleeve."

According to a poll conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life released Thursday, nearly one in five Americans believe Obama is a Muslim, up from around one in 10 Americans who said he was Muslim last year.

While most of those who think Obama is Muslim are Republicans, the number of independents who believe he is Muslim has expanded significantly, from 10 percent last year to 18 percent now.

The number of Americans who express uncertainly about the president's religion, meanwhile, is much larger and has also grown, including among Obama's political base. For instance, fewer than half of Democrats and African-Americans now say that Obama is Christian according to the Pew poll.

Hello,

I saw this tidbit on the CNN political ticker just now. I'm not particularly surprised by this. Every other day I get an email spammed out from somewhere that says Obama is a Muslim, and is not a natural-born citizen of the U.S. Some of this material isn't just spammed from unknown sources, but passed on to me by friends and family members. I must get hundreds of these per year. That kind of unrelenting repetition has to have an impact.

I agree. What's most troubling is that its silly. It does not matter if the man is a muslem or a Christian or...as he seems...a fella that skips church every week.

Would I rather have a church-going Christian? Yes. Is it my business what he is? No. Man says he's a Christian, thats good enough for me. If he said he's a Muslem, thats ok too.

His faith, color, or birth status have nothing to do with his failed domestic policies, out of control spending, excessive taxation, indecisive leadership, or any of the hundreds of other professional reasons I do not support the President and if he was a bible-carrying church-going devout man of faith it would not change any of those things I do not like (unless his faith gave him the wisdom to avoid those problems in the first place).

So the American people are getting a crash course in tolerance and flunking out.

Or are we here getting a crash course in how intolerant the man in the street is of foreign cultures? Barack Obama says nice things about Islam--ipso facto he must be a Muslim. I say some nice things about gay culture or express a taste for rap music and I must be a black homosexual. This is the reasoning of grade school kids.

One thing that's bothering me a whole lot is how the recent polls seem to reflect a very, forgive my vernacular, redneckish view of the world and I know there are far too many "minority" folks in this country, along with commie pinkos to support such pervasive redneckery. Is it just that the foxnews crowd are the only people answering polls these days, just as they're the only ones watching network television anymore or getting calls from pollsters on their land lines? Seems to me polls can be gerrymandered a lot easier than congressional districts...

Hello,

Polls can get all kinds of interesting results depending on how they're worded. However, I don't think it should be overlooked that minorities are as capable of discrimination as any other group of people. Intolerance is rampant, and some politicians and religious leaders make the sale of that product their stock and trade. People are already inclined to dislike anything that is even a bit alien. A little push can go a long way.

Maybe the Computer RPG game 'Fallout' has it a bit wrong.

Its signature line is, "War... War never changes."

Maybe it ought to be "People... People never change."

The cynic in me believes it might be true. The optimist in me rails against it.

Bah, it's simple - anyone with any sense takes one look at that front loaded, highly biased "poll" and laughs it off, going somewhere less distasteful, while those desperately wishing to confirm their purile fantasies spam it and roll out alts by the handful to spam it some more.

The "Loud Little Handful" has never been more desperate, and despite all their best attempts to appeal to the baser nature of man, all over the media as of late 24-7-365, are swiftly sinking into irrelevance as anyone with half a brain turns away in disgust and tunes them out, leaving in the end nothing but a great big circle jerk of self-congratulation when they believe they have successfully silenced every voice but their own.

Of course, this doesn't make em all that less dangerous, cause when they DO figure out that they've been shut out and shunned, then they will do something... extreme.

Quote:

Victory of the Loud Little Handful
by Mark Twain

The loud little handful - as usual - will shout for the war. The pulpit will - warily and cautiously - object... at first. The great, big, dull bulk of the nation will rub its sleepy eyes and try to make out why there should be a war, and will say, earnestly and indignantly, "It is unjust and dishonorable, and there is no necessity for it."

Then the handful will shout louder. A few fair men on the other side will argue and reason against the war with speech and pen, and at first will have a hearing and be applauded, but it will not last long; those others will outshout them, and presently the antiwar audiences will thin out and lose popularity.

Before long, you will see this curious thing: the speakers stoned from the platform, and free speech strangled by hordes of furious men...

Next the statesmen will invent cheap lies, putting the blame upon the nation that is attacked, and every man will be glad of those conscience-soothing falsities, and will diligently study them, and refuse to examine any refutations of them; and thus he will by and by convince himself that the war is just, and will thank God for the better sleep he enjoys after this process of grotesque self-deception.

It is worth noting that, according to Fox News, 1/3 of Americans believe in UFOs and ghosts. See generally http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,305277,00.html.

Hence, if less than 20% of Americans believe that Obama is a muslim, ghost or alien, then we are making progress.

The title is “Obama admits he is a Muslim”, then they follow it immediately with the disclaimer. That pretty much says it all, for me.
Quote:

Legal Disclaimer: The writers, producers, editors and publishers of this video are not stating or implying that Barack Hussein Obama is a Muslim, or that Obama himself has claimed to be a Muslim. Rather, the writers, producers, editors ad publishers of this video are only examining the evidence surrounding the rumor that Barack Hussein Obama might be a secret Muslim.
That pretty much says it all for me. They KNOW it's bullshit and are afraid of being sued.

It's a game, just like the birthers. Say it often enough, the MSM will cover it, politicians will talk about it, and people will believe it.

But I believe some of the results of the polls can be accounted for by consistent propaganda and fear mongering, which is a very effective tool to manipulate people.

Just found this:
Quote:

As the mosque debate dominates the summer spin cycle, a new Pew Research Poll shows that an increasing number of Americans believe that Barack Obama is a Muslim -- now up to 18 percent from 11 percent in March 2009. At the same time, only a third of Americans say Obama is a Christian, down from nearly 50 percent last year.

The absence of Obama attending Sunday services regularly has been a repeated "just askin'..." talking point on right wing news and radio -- and indeed, the Pew poll shows that most respondents got their "views" about Obama's religion from "the media."

The meticulous attention that some liberals paid to George Bush's golf game is now directed at Obama hitting the links -- with the added subtext that he's playing when he should be praying. In the eyes of his opponents, Obama is an elitist silently laughing at those bitter Americans who cling to their guns and religion. The fact that an icon of the religious right like Ronald Reagan rarely attended Sunday services is ignored.

But these poll numbers are also an ugly proxy for the campaign to convince the American people that their president is somehow "other" -- an "Alien in the White House," as a Wall Street Journal editorial page headline called him recently.

The birther myths build off this sense of Obama as a sinister fraud, casting Obama as not just anti-American in his beliefs but actually un-American and therefore not constitutionally eligible to be president.

These conspiracy theories in turn build off chain e-mails that have been circulating since at least 2008, portraying Obama as a Muslim Marxist Manchurian Candidate determined to undermine the Republic from within -- a fright wing fantasy that has proliferated via the internet. Depressingly, a CNN poll earlier this month found that 27 percent of all Americans believe that Obama was either definitely or probably not born in the USA -- a belief shared by 41 percent of Republicans.

The rise of partisan media means that Americans are self-segregating themselves into separate political realities where we can't even agree on basic facts like the president's religion and birthplace.

While no responsible Republican would ever explicitly encourage these beliefs, there are plenty who delight in these poll findings because it presumably points to partisan gain. Truth is not as important as the pursuit of power in professional partisans' eyes, and dividing to conquer is a time-honored trick.

Each president since at least Nixon has faced a concerted effort to de-legitimize the duly elected president of the opposing party from day one. But with Barack Obama, the fact that he is the first African-American president with a middle name Hussein has led to a new level of ugliness and suspicion. Attacks that demonize the president are poisoning the civic well from which we all drink.

Pretty much says it all, for me.

I hate to do this... but I'm going to cut us some slack. Comparatively, the US is still a very, very - wait for it - VERY young nation. It's easy to look at us and see our GDP and and think our cultural and worldly IQ should be in proportion, but, um, no. Italians did not perfect Parmigiano-Reggiano in just 200 years.

"Historical documents show that in the 13th-14th century Parmigiano was already very similar to that produced today which suggests that its origins can be traced to far earlier."

And if you think, "WTF?? it's just cheese!" then you prove my point. It's Culture! You cannot short track life experience. That is a big, major importanto concept. We're still figuring it ALL out.

America loves a winner!

I've yet to get 1 e-mail, spam or otherwise, stating that Obama is a muslim.

I doubt very much that spammed e-mails have much of an affect on how folks view Obama. I think it has more to do with what says, does, or more accurately, doesn't say / do, that shapes the public's opinion on the man.

I suspect he's really confused, per his actual religion. His dad was a muslim, and to many around the muslim world, that make Obama a muslim, in their eyes.

So, if dad, who left him, was muslim, and his mom, was agnostic/ atheist, who or what shaped his early years. His 'racist' grandmother ?

Frankly, it doesn't matter. Hell, I'd vote for Romney, even though I think Mormons are loonier than most religions. And I see all religion as basically loony.

Does he kiss Islam's ass when ever he can? Yes. I think it is because of a misguided liberal bias towards tolerance. Why is tolerating the intolerable a noble act to that bunch? I think the vid RL posted is piecemeal garbage and doesn't show Obama admitting he is a Muslim. That he claims he is a christian is fine with me, although I could care less I think anyone who REALLY believes in a religion is showing a lack of intelligence. I do find it a bit strange that he did attend the church of a mad man. So, to hell with what he claims his religious views are or are not, Let's get back to discussing how this liberal quack and his administration are pissing off most of the US population and how much we can't wait for the political revolt in November. And what steps states can take to shield us from these crazies till then...Nullification anybody?

If you see Obama's respect for others as kissing ass, then you must view Bush's egocentric attitudes that America should decide what's best for the world and the way he went about it as bullying, which it was...well, except the Saudis, to whom he did appear to cow tow and be overly familiar with.

Bush showed little respect for anyone, as evidenced by his trying to be overly familiar with the German Chancelor, to everyone's disgust. Either he spoke in bullying rhetoric or he showed inappropriate intimacy; he didn't seem to understand the concepts of decorum and diplomacy. That Obama understands these things seems to you to be kissing ass; you're entitled to your views, but I see them as blindness.

I answered your question about tolerance and why it is a good thing in my opinion. Given "most of the population" went along with the Iraq war, I don't think it shows particular intelligence on their part and should not have been tolerated. the same with his TRULY stomping on our civil rights and the Constitution, but the majority of the country went along with that, too. It was fine with the majority of the country and you, apparently, whereas you view virtually everything Obama has done or tried to do as abhorrent, so I find the dichotomy illogical.

Presidents for a long time have yammered about health care but done nothing. What the Congres (NOT Obama or the Dems, who were initially in favor of the public option) did on healthcare pleases few now; the same was true of many things in the past which the majority of Americans wouldn't want taken away now. Only time will actually tell, and hopefully, just like with other measures, it's only a first step and better things will come.

Presidents for a long time have decried our dependence on oil but done nothing. Obama is at least trying to impact that, whatever you think of his efforts orachievements.

Wall Street has run amok for decades with little or no curb by administrations; again, Obama and the Dems are TRYING to do something about it.

Gys in the military was abhorrent to many, if not most, of the country at one time; in fact it was unthinkable. Now the majority of the country believes it is appropriate. DADT was a bad idea at the time, but has turned out to be the first step toward allowing homosexual citizens to serve without harrassment or ending of careers. Bear in mind that the majority of the military was ALSO against allowing Jews to serve, something few today know or would consider right.

Everything they have tried to do would have turned out better if the Repubicans has worked WITH them, rather than being determined to obstruct on everything. If our legislators actually behaved in a manner which brought about improvements in these things and others, it would be good for everyone. But that seems to be impossible at this time. Doing what the "majority" wants increases the chance of election or re-election; politicians know this and it often has more to do with their opposition than what is truly right, or what they might even believe. Bear in mind that the Republicans proposed and/or backed a number of the things the Dems have tried to implement, prior to a Democrat being in office.

What you are ignoring is the fact that change comes slowly, so things which "piss off" the American people right now might well be found to be things they approve of later. Bearing in mind that equal rights, interracial marriage, Jews in the military, etc., were all things that "pissed off" the majority of people at the time, but are now accepted as good things, there is a longer view to take on everything; nothing is static and people and countries evolve.

Right now the Dems and Obama are trying to change things which have been in place for a very long time. Resistance is natural; talk to us in a couple of decades and we'll see how pissed off people are then. The long view is something of which Americans, and probably people in general, have difficulty conceiving.
