The DNC is out with a new ad Friday.
(CNN) - The Democratic National Committee is out Friday with a new television ad that looks forward to the November elections and closes with a cameo from former President George W. Bush.

Entitled "Big Choices," the ad frames the midterm elections as a choice between the policies of President Obama and national Democrats and the policies of Bush and the GOP. It captures a view of idealistic Americana –rolling fields of wheat, windmills, a teacher in a classroom, a welder in a factory–before Bush makes a surprise appearance with a verbal gaffe.

"You fool me, you can't get fooled again," Obama's Oval Office predecessor says in footage used in the ad.

The new 30-second spot is running on national cable stations.

I think it is a mistake to run an anti-Bush ad after the ex-President has been gone from office for nearly 2 years.

If it implies that the Republicans haven't changed in that time, it also implies that the Democrats have nothing new to offer.

"Hope" and "Change" were once inspiring rally-words, but they are no longer options for the DNC now that they are in office. To invoke those words today would imply that things aren't going well and we should wish for them to improve. If all they've got left is "Bush Sucked" then I am beginning to agree with the partisans who say that the Republicans are going to demolish the Democrats come November.

And if the DNC can't do better than this, they may not deserve to win.

I again wish for a strong 3rd party. I'd prefer it was the Libertarian party, but I might settle for less if someone else could make a splash. Sadly, it's probably too late for a dark horse to gallop onto the field.

I dunno Anthony,

I don't see that ad as running against Bush, so much as I see it suggesting that nothing's substantively changed for the GOP since then. It outlines some Democratic selling points and uses Bush as the rhetorical punch line. I'd say he makes a better whipping boy than he did a President, but that's me. Until Republicans get a new face, Bush is it. Who else the Dems gonna put in their ad to represent the GOP?

Isn't it relevant that the GOP has nothing to add to the Bush legacy, no new ideas, just the same old ruinous policies kicked up to 11?

An advert that talks about the Democrats' progress and plans for America. The End.

If you need to find someone to bash in order to make your point, something is wrong with you. This is said about the anti-Obama bashers all the time. But the DNC is showcasing its bankruptcy of ideas and surrendering any semblance of higher-ground. If you ask me, it's a suicidal platform.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I agree 100% with Cavalier. I have no problem with that ad. People have forgotten so quickly how awful it was under Bush and that the Republicans have nothing to offer but more of the same. Nobody wonders what shit hole we'd be in if McCain/Palin had won; maybe they should.

The anger in America is largely because of where we were when Obama took office; he didn't fix that quickly enough, and we still have a long ways to go, so the anger continues. What Bush wrought continues to affect people personally, so if anything, the anger and frustration at their situation has grown, and it's only logical Obama and the Dems should be the target. Human nature wants SOMEONE to blame.

You can't prove a negative, as they say, but at least you can remind people of that negative and ask them if they REALLY want to go back to that?

Negative campaigning is a standard tactic in America, unfortunately, but far better would be to offer something concrete, since the Repubicans can't and are running exclusively on "anti-Obama".

If running negative ads were really political suicide, Washington would recreate Jonestown every election cycle.

I'm not a fan of generic partisan ads, but what more can the DNC do with a 30 sec spot?

I really don't think a 30 second spot is anything to go on, but even this ad spends 25 seconds to affirm its values and a single grammatical clause, taking 5 seconds to enunciate, on the Republicans. So you're saying it's political suicide even to mention Bush?

We'll see.

Let's not forget that Obama is not the King, and didn't have the Presidency thrust upon him by royal birth. I suppose I feel that people can be wrong and misguided on an issue, without feeling the need to apply monikers like 'pathetic' or 'coward' to them.

For my own part, I do feel that the former President spawned many ills, many of which we are still suffering from today.

However, I don't think there's any traction to be had for the DNC in focusing on an ex-president this far into the new presidency. It's time to look forward, not back. It's necessary to sell based on how they're going to improve the nation, a sales pitch based on Desire. To bring back the specter of Bush is to campaign based on Fear.

And that's what the Republicans are accused of, so how is the DNC setting itself apart? They are missing the opportunity to be better.
