When pastor Steve Stone initially heard of the mosque and Islamic center being erected on the sprawling land adjacent his church, his stomach tightened.

Then he raised a 6-foot sign reading, "Welcome to the Neighborhood."

The issue for Stone and the 550-person Heartsong Church in Cordova, came down to one question:

"What would Jesus do if He were us? He would welcome the neighbor," Stone said.

The Memphis Islamic Center, a nonprofit organization formed three years ago, is two weeks from breaking ground on the first phase of a multimillion-dollar complex.

While plans for Islamic centers from Manhattan to Southern California and just miles away in Murfreesboro, Tenn., have triggered vitriolic responses and divided communities, here in Memphis it's been a peaceful process.

On a 31-acre stretch at Humphrey Road and Houston Levee, Memphis Islamic Center leaders plan to build a massive gathering place during the next several years. It will include a mosque, youth center, day care center, indoor gym, sports fields, medical clinic and retirement home.

While the 4,000-square-foot worship hall is being completed, Heartsong has opened its doors to its neighbors throughout the month-long observance of Ramadan.

Under a gigantic cross constructed of salvaged wood, nearly 200 area Muslims have been gathering each night to pray.

"I think it's helped break down a lot of barriers in both congregations," said Islamic center board member Danish Siddiqui.

"I've got fear and ignorance in me, too," said Stone, referring to his and some of his congregants' early apprehension toward the Memphis center.

But as members of the Christian congregation take the opportunity to sit in on Ramadan prayers and meet people at the nightly gatherings, much of that mystery and fear has dissipated.

"People in Memphis appreciate faith, even if it's not their faith," said Shaykh Yasir Qadhi, the Islamic center's scholar in residence and a Rhodes College professor.

The peaceful tone in the Bluff City has been refreshing for Qadhi, 35, who recently moved to Memphis from Connecticut, where early this month his Bridgeport mosque was descended on by angry protestors yelling slurs at families as they arrived for evening prayer.

"We're living in a climate of Islamophobia," he said.

The Memphis project hasn't been entirely free of criticism. Bloggers and religious publications have speculated that the Memphis group is receiving funding from Saudi Arabia, which the local Islamic board says is completely false.

"If the community can't put it together, it's not worth it," said Siddiqui, a Germantown resident.

The overarching fear being voiced in protests going on across the country is that Islamic centers will become hubs for teaching extremism.

But Islamic center board members say it's to the contrary.

Islamic community centers help form solid Muslim-American identities and keep young kids and adults from feeling marginalized, they said.

Without a place to call home, young Muslims are more likely to seek more radical interpretation of the Quran online, says Arsalan Shirwany, a board member and father of three.

When it is finished, the new facility will be a center for the whole community, and a place for interfaith cooperation, Shirwany said.

"This is what we need to fight extremism," he said.

I applaud them enthusiastically. I wish there were more who wanted to stand up for the ideals of this country and for humanity.

When mosques in S.Arabia put up similar signs and there's a genuine display of respect and tolerance to other religions in Muslim controlled lands, I'll take notice.

Until then, I got better things to be doing.

Ahhh, so then we are no more civilized than the countries we dispise. I get it.

Since when did America judge itself by other countries? I thought you would be totally against anything like that. Huh. Obviously I was wrong.

Yep, we should start stoning people and writing laws about women covering their faces and burning Muslim countries' flags...THAT'll show 'em!

Oh, I hate to tell you, but when it comes to religious tolerance:

Jerusalem
Quote:

When the second of the four rightly guided Caliphs, Umar ibn Al-Khattab, entered Jerusalem in 638 AD, he entered the city on foot, out of respect for the holiness of the place.

His first action was to clear the rubble and the debris from the area of Al-Aqsa Mosque and to cleanse the whole sight with rose water.

There was no bloodshed. There was no slaughter. Unlike the slaughter of 70,000 men, women and children which accompanied the arrival of the Crusaders in 1099, the Muslims entered the city peacefully, signing a treaty with the Patriarch Sophronius, which guaranteed their rights to worship, their lives and their property.

The Patriarch, no doubt acting upon his lived experience in the city, asked that no Jews be allowed to live in Jerusalem. Salah Al-Din, known as Saladin in the West, lifted this injunction when he retook Jerusalem from the Crusaders in 1187.

Those who wished to leave were guaranteed their safety. Those who wished to remain were allowed to do so.

Spain:
Quote:

During this time, Christians and Jews held high office in the royal court. It was only when the Catholic monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, retook the Muslim cities in the south that mosques and synagogues were burned down and Muslims and Jews were either expelled or forced to convert.

Sultan Mehmet II officially recognized Patriarch Gennadius II as leader of the Orthodox peoples throughout the Ottoman Empire following the capture of Constantinople in 1453.

In the same year, he granted to the leader of the Jewish community (the Chief Rabbi) the title “Hahambasha”, or Chief Wise Man. Both actions show the respect for other faiths which was to symbolize the Ottoman rule.

Palestine:
Quote:

We have only to look at Palestine under the Ottoman Empire, to see that this was the greatest period when the region knew peace. Christians, Muslims and Jews lived together happily in the holy city of Jerusalem.
Scotland (2009):
Quote:

Some weeks after the Israeli attack on Gaza in January 2009, there was a rise in anti-Semitic attacks and hate crimes in many countries.

In Edinburgh, the synagogue of the United Hebrew Congregation was attacked by vandals, allegedly protesting against the war on Gaza. The response from the Scottish-Islamic Foundation, Scotland’s largest umbrella organization for Muslims, was swift: “We will guard the synagogue for you”, they said, if it proved too difficult for the Jewish community to do so.

So we are to go forward claiming no Muslim tolerance ever existed in history., I take it. Yes, siree, we certainly have become civilized.

And to educate you just a teeny bit, if you bother to read it:
Quote:

The first step is to hold up a mirror to yourself. Examine what beliefs your community (in my case, Christians) holds and how they hold them. On the positive side, you are likely to find there some features which can improve relations. Informed and empathic Muslims also speak well of many elements of Christianity. On the negative side, the mirror will reveal flaws, and to acknowledge them — without grovelling or in a spirit of self-hate which can come naturally to Christians who are fighting their own heritage — will enrich the conversation. It is disarming when neither party in a dialogue has to keep up appearances and both can meet each other honestly.

Another crucial step is to educate yourself about the other's religion, especially by reading their scriptures. In times of tension and terrorism, agitators tend to highlight the tense and terrifying texts in the others' books — the Qur'an or the Hebrew Scriptures and New Testament. To suggest that violence is what the other faith is all about is dishonest and always alienating. I have never met a Jew or Christian who thinks that the texts in the "Holy War" books of Joshua and Judges (or try I Samuel 15) — which license and even command genocide — are what Judaism or Christianity is about. Those scriptures instead climax in messages of peace and healing. So does the Qur'an.

No, you really don't. The US and the rest of the Western world has shown more tolerance, more generosity and more freedom to non Christians than the Mullahs could shake a stick at. Or throw a stone at.....

Well, you should be use to being wrong by now, but that's another topic. And while we shouldn't judge ourselves by their standards ( as you and the Lefties want to do w/ socialist Europe ) neither should we be blind to what they do.

Quote:

Yep, we should start stoning people and writing laws about women covering their faces and burning Muslim countries' flags...THAT'll show 'em!

No, they'd like that, actually. We'd be falling right in line with what they're all about. And that's what they want, and incredibly, you continue to fail to understand.

They WANT to change us so we're more like them. It's why they kill. Submit, convert, or die.

We ain't down with that, and actively resisting their intolerance and hate isn't giving into hate itself. We'll allow them to pray and be who they are, until it comes to a point of their rights infringing on the rights of others.

That simple level of human decency seems to be too much to ask of them in return.

I wonder why you think so.

Personally, I'd like to outlaw organized religions getting tax breaks. And then make them PAY a superstition tax on top of that. They'd be forced to charge the patrons a fee- THEN we'd see how few REALLY believe all that nonsense.
Freedom of religion? I'm cool with that; believe whatever myth you like.
Freedom to get rich off it? No way, pal. Using weak peeps to form congregations to feed egos & wallets is in the same league with heroine dealers IMO.

And those superstitious looneys in the middle east? Again I say, bombard them from the air with Playboys & Penthouses. Make sure every populated area has been blanketed! Kids will grow up to want to SEE & TOUCH the opposite sex regardless of their inane parents' teachings! It could be the seeding of a new & erotically freed Middle East!!!!

There is NO comparison between being "blind" to what terrorists do (which we NEVER should be) and being blind to the fact that not all Muslims ARE terrorists and being hateful and intolerant of a religion.

There's no "actively resisting" anything in destruction of people, property, and denial of the very rights America STANDS for! Essentially, by damaging real mosques, denying them permits, etc., praying and being who they are is precisely what we're not allowing.

There are no "rights" of the those opposed to the COMMUNITY CENTER which are being infringed upon; the ONLY rights being infringed upon are property rights and freedom of religion, by opposing it. No one has denied any permits to the Victory Mosque / Cordoba project. The opposition you speak of is free speech, and is a constitutional right. YOU'RE supporting the suppression of that right. Exercising that right in no way denies another person of their freedom of religion.

Also, your little abbreviated tour of ' religious tolerance' in history and around the world was cute. It was also nonsensical, by failing to address the real basic RIGHTS we extend and most other nations don't, but still cute. Sort of.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello Niki,

The Constitution that protects the rights of Muslim worshipers in America also protects the rights of people who want to decry the rights of Muslim worshipers in America.

So, people are very free to protest the rights of other people, just so long as they limit their activity to speech.

As long as all those who speak out against Muslims and Muslim construction limit themselves to communication, and restrain themselves to that level, they can proceed to display intolerance, fear, anger, and even hatred. They can take verbal revenge for the less impotent intolerance of other nations. They can boil with envy for other nations that allow physical acts against unwanted persons. They can shout and shake their fists in agonizing comparative powerlessness.

Our citizens have every right to mimic the actions of the extremists they despise, so long as that mimicry falls short of violence or legal discrimination.

The Constitution preserves the right to speak against Constitutional philosophies. It preserves the right to speak against freedom. It preserves the right to seethe with intolerant emotions and to spew those emotions in myriad forms of speech.

...And if anyone seeks to act on their intolerant speech without performing a Constitutional amendment, that same Constitution will protect the people they have claimed as their enemies.

Wow River, you continue to astonish me. At this point, I don't care if you're a sockpuppet pretending to be nice; just having you BE nice here is worth its weight in gold. Mind, I'm not claiming you ARE one, just mentioning it as people have said they use sockpuppets to "play nice" sometimes. I have decided to take each person at their word and not care beyond that.

I thank you for your kind words, and again express my appreciation for your change of heart. As to comic sans, I've used it on every forum I've ever been on just 'cuz I like the look of it...and yes, given my tastes, I'm lucky it ISN'T Papyrus! ;o)

I don't mean to "hog" anything--I was a bad girl yesterday and stayed here all DAY, which I don't usually do, nor do I come back after I'm finished in the morning. Waste of time; sometimes I just get hooked into trying to offer facts (like I said, waste of time often) and looking stuff up to see if my points are valid and back them up is educational and interesting.

The remark didn't bother me, by the way, I'm immue to that stuff now, but I thank you nonetheless for your kindness.

Agent, polygamy is no longer practiced in Muslim countries, as far as I know--definitely not in Afghanistan! MOST followers of Islam treat their women with respect, according to the Qu'ran and the word of Allah. Even when there was, it was only the rich who had multiple women (you know, called harems?), but that was centuries ago.

Shees, Raptor, there you go again, flaunting your ignorance.
Quote:

engaging in Anti-Islamic rhetoric, violence and racism
is PRECISELY what is happening. You can't argue the rhetoric; as to violence, when Christian cursaders captured the Jerusalem, they started general masscre of Jews and Mulsims; even the people inside the temple were not spared. It is said that "The knees of horses were drenched with blood of dead bodies inside the temple area".

But when Aubi recaptured the area, he forgave all. He let the crusaders to go to their countries and all other Jews and Christians living there were given freedom of worship.

As to current violence, in 2008-2009
Quote:

Mosques and other places of worship have been particular targets of vandalism and arson. In some incidents, religious texts have also been desecrated and destroyed.
Back in 2001, A 49-year-old Indian gas station owner in Arizona and a Pakistani Muslim sore owner in Texas were shot dead.

There have been recorded more than 300 incidents of anti-Muslim harassment, threats, discrimination and violence.

Quote:

Most recently, a mosque in Madera, California was vandalized. This marked the third incident of vandalism at the mosque that the Madera County Sheriff's Department has started investigating as hate crimes.

Earlier, a brick was thrown at the center and another sign with, 'No temple for the god of terrorism,' was placed on the property.

You're also conveniently forgetting the recent knife attack on a cabby in New York, I assume?

I swear, I'm starting to think whoever said you revel in your ignorance is right, or else it's deliberate blindness to the facts happening around you, dunno which. Or else an attempt to trigger; rather than going after me personally (which you managed to do as well), stating obvious lies.

I don’t deny anyone’s freedom of SPEECH against the community center--I abhor it, just as I abhor the bible burning; I’m against it, because of what it says about us; and I’m exercising MY freedom of speech by speaking against it. But in the end, it is the violent anti-Islamic fervor sweeping our nation that I’m speaking out against. As to permit denial:

Chicago:
Quote:

We're hearing from the local chamber of commerce and alderman's office that the city has denied a special use permit that would allow a mosque to replace a shut down hot dog grill.
Kentucky:
Quote:

A group of Somali natives petitioning to open a new mosque in Mayfield has been denied a conditional use permit by city officials. This is the first time the city has denied a religious group a conditional use permit.
Georgia:
Quote:

The Al-Hedaya Islamic Center in Marietta was denied a special use permit by Marietta City Council on Wednesday night.
Anthony,
Quote:

...And if anyone seeks to act on their intolerant speech without performing a Constitutional amendment, that same Constitution will protect the people they have claimed as their enemies.

"I would like to believe that’s true, but unfortunately, it hasn’t been so far."

Hello,

I am ashamed and angered at this news, and I sincerely hope these permits were denied for legitimate zoning reasons and not for reasons of faith.

I know that the staunch conservative voices on this board will unanimously speak out against any trampling of Constitutional Rights and Civil Liberties. Momentarily, their voices will fill these digital halls with resounding condemnation. Surely, the actual real-life trampling of the Constitution right now will anger them more than any theoretical trampling of the Constitution under some worst-case-scenario imagined future implementation of Sharia Law.

You just watch, Niki. I'll lead the charge, as the first conservative voice speaking in defense of the Constitution.

Oh, Anthony, you’re FUNNY! Thanx, that made me smile...I’ll be right behind you, but given I’m a “Lib”, it won’t mean anything. We “Libs” hate the Constitution, I keep getting told that.

Damn; apologies Dancer (“Lili”)—I KEEP getting you confused with RiverLove. Mea culpa yet again! You’re not here as much as she is, and my brain just skips over the “River” part and doesn’t take the time to recognize the last word. I’m so sorry. Coming from YOU, it means just as much if not more, as you’ve been someone I’ve respected from the beginning and whose approval I am proud to accept, with gratitude. Damned brain...

Personally, I’m glad you changed your screen name, but it’s only because of my own stupidity in that it makes it easier for me to discern between you. Lazybrainness is a serious disorder, and I’ve got it in spades in some ways!

I’m disgusted (no surprise there) that Kane would take a swipe at YOU, who have never said a mean word to anyone here from the day you arrived (at least I’ve been here long enough to know that, which I can’t know about those who’ve been here longer than I). It says all that needs saying about him, but I’m sorry he went after you (as a way of going after me, as usual).

I'm sure they'll be along any second now...

Meanwhile, I'm afraid you'll have to hang out with a few of us pesky liberals.

One of the places that was denied a permit in Tennessee really *WAS* a legitimate zoning beef: not enough parking spaces were allotted. However, one of the councilmen who denied them the permit for that reason did admit that had it been a Baptist church, they'd have issued the permit, because "they know how to park".

Do I count as a sockpuppet of my old name now, if I say exactly who I am?
Perhaps a more important question, is it less confusing now??

Facts are stubborn things.

No worries - you're welcome here under whatever name you choose!

Yeah, the silence is absolutely resounding. But then, it always is in such situations.

And yup, the zoning thing for "parking" was a ploy. In another one, there WAS a legitimate reason; they'd been given a permit to have a mosque in a residential area, and wanted to add on to it, which was voted down. But the parking thing? To say they'd have okayed the Baptists but not the Muslims, whether it's because they think Baptists can park, makes it pretty obvious.

The Chicago one is even moreso.
Quote:

The city has denied a special use permit that would allow a mosque to replace a shut down hot dog grill.

It's based on the need to generate tax revenue on the former site of the original Fluky's and later U Lucky Dawg, at 6821 N. Western Ave.

"Our neighborhood is probably one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the city of Chicago," said Zandel.

Zandel says the organization's 200 members include a strong Muslim presence.

"Our membership is probably made up between 30 and 40 percent Muslim," she said.

Yet in spite of that, the chamber is opposing construction of the mosque on the site.

It's the same neighborhood where the former hot dog restaurant along busy Western Avenue has sat vacant for two years.

Given it happened in August of this year, and the call for "no more mosques" at ALL, I'd like to know if they'd deny the permit if it were a "Baptist church" too, AND if they'd have denied the permit at any other time in the past...the same for the "parking" excuse.

Well, yanno...

There's this abandoned and boarded up Baptist church just down the road from here, and hey look, the property's up for sale!

I wouldn't mind the local Muslims for neighbors, they're pretty cool folks, not without their issues true, but the fact that they're burning effigys of Osama Bin Laden today gives me warm fuzzies.
