The revelation that Rich Iott, a Republican candidate for Congress from Ohio, was an active member of a group of dedicated to understanding the experience of soldiers who served in the Nazi Waffen SS by dressing up in their uniforms — and staging recreations of their battles — has forced historical re-enactors to defend their hobby.

That Mr. Iott engaged in this pastime came to light on Friday, when Joshua Green of The Atlantic published photographs of him in an SS uniform beneath a headline asking, “Why is This GOP House Candidate Dressed as a Nazi?”

I'm thinking about asking some Muslims if they'd like to do a reenactment of 9/11.

I'm sure you'll all support this as an act of historical education.

And I was thinking of doing some Vietnam reenactments, too. All I need is a few drums of Agent Orange and some Napalm and a bunch of preschoolers...

So, in order to understand history, we should ignore it,and pretend it never happened.

Got it.

So, when there's a reenactment of a battle, the Allied forces are suppose to just square off against stick figures ?

I find it sort of funny, that folks on a sci-fi board will ridicule those who dress up in NAZI uniforms, and yet have no problem 'pretending' to be all manner of evil characters at conventions and the like.

Some folks like to dress up and do the reenactment thing. BFD. What difference does it make, whether it's Confederate vs Union soldiers, or Allied vs Axis ? Somebody's got to play the bad guys.... geeze, get a damn grip.

Bah, in any re-enactment, someone has to play the bad guys - I do a great confederate messenger, and can do some really good shot-off-my-horse scenes if the horse is kind enough to play along.

So I think it's a tempest in a teapot, really, I mean it's not like we don't KNOW the damn GOP kinda thinks the Nazis were the greatest thing since sliced bread, well, except for that whole (getting caught at) death camps thing, yeah...

But this guy is no more a jackboot than any of the rest of em, no more than a steampunk enthusiast who uses reich symbols on his creations for style value.

Thank you, Frem, and omigawd, Wulf, I have to agree with you. Yuck.

There was someone on here recently who was talking about reenactment, they even put up photos, does anyone remember that? And there's the movie "Sweet Home Alabama", where one of the characters is a reenacter...it's a funny scene. The woman is wandering around a battlefield strewn with "dead" bodies, asks "Anyone seen ____?" Dead body sits up, repeats the question, buncha dead bodies sit up and one points, says something like "He's over there". That's a general memory, don't hold me to the specifics; see the movie.

I'd vaguely heard of reenactments, but I think they're most popular over here in the Midwest, Heartland, South, maybe? I know WWII reenactment is a BIG hobbie in England (can you blame them?). Because around here all we have is Ren Faires, plus some Celtic stuff where they dress up, but it's not historical reenactment, which is different.

Maybe someday the WILL reenact 'Nam, I dunno, it'd have to be quite a while in the future. But it's fair game, technically; 9/11 isn't, there's nothing to reenact and I think it will always be a sore spot even if there was. But acting out battles has been going on as a hobby for a long, long time, and there's still tons of interest in WWII--not so much WWI, which is interesting.

It's technically
Quote:

Historical reenactment is an educational activity in which participants attempt to recreate some aspects of a historical event or period. This may be as narrow as a specific moment from a battle, such as the reenactment of Pickett's Charge at the Great Reunion of 1913, or as broad as an entire period, such as Regency reenactment.
Wikipedia...check it out, it's really interesting.

Here are a couple of photos from the Wikipedia page:

Okay? There are myriad groups doing all epochs, and WWII is probably second in popularity to the Civil War (just guessing). Check out some websites:

"Getting Started in WWII Reenactment" ( http://www.501stpir.com/i_501stpir_reenacted/gettingstarted.html) says
Quote:

What nationality? This is a pretty easy one. One thing to think about when you're portraying the generic soldier for any of the impressions. The cheapest to do is Russian. The uniform is basic & the gun is cheap. Guys who do Russian say you can pick up your entire empression for less than $300, including the Mosin-Nagant Rifle! You could choose to do US GI. The uniforms are easily obtained. Any size can be bought as a reproduction, but if you fit original you can pick the stuff up cheap. I personally go with reproductions & keep the originals at home...or as my dress uniform where I know I will not damage them. The basic rifle will cost you since a M1 Garand can cost over $500-$600 for a decent one. The hobby always needs more quality Germans. The uniforms cost a bit more than US uniforms, but your rifle will probably cost you less than $200. But as we all know, you're not in this for the cost of it. Pick a nationality you feel comfortable doing and you'll enjoy researching.

Which Branch of Service? This is getting a little more specific as to what you'll do on the battlefield. The basic options are Infantry, Airborne Infantry, Armored, and Support Services like Signal Corp, Medical, or Transportation. The most common unit on the WW2 battlefield was the Infantry and as such they are always needed. They were the backbone of the army, taking & holding the ground that was fought for. Elite units like the US, UK, or German Paratroopers, US 1st Special Services Force, German mountian troops and German Waffen SS all get cool unique equipment & dashing uniforms. Don't get me wrong here, I've got a Paratrooper impression, but there are generally too many elite units at reenactments. Lets also don't forget the Support troops. I've read that there were about 20 men to support every man on the front. These soldiers can be portrayed at living histories, tacticals, and reenactments as Signal Corp wire layers, Medics, Surgical Hospital staff, truck drivers, Military Police, and much more.

Or try one of the biggies, in England, the "All Fronts Reenactment Association" (all war) at http://www.afra.org.uk/

For Medieval reenactors, you can get all kinds of goodies at http://www.raisonsbrassband.com/html/ww2_Reenactment.htm

Wanna see some photos and videos of a group that enjoys just WWII REENACTMENT GERMAN WH & WAFFEN SS?
http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=4
6075402

(These guys really do it up PROUD...I highly recommend the videos on their front page!)

Hell, Google WWII Reenactment and you'll get TONS of videos. And Wulf is right; to play their little games, somebody's gotta play the bad guys, so either you hate everyone who takes the bad guy's parts (in which case you want to do away with all the fun these guys and gals have reenacting) or you recognize it for what it is and move ON!

Having been a dancer, booth owner and other things at our local Renaissance Faire, I'd be pretty pissed if you wanted to do away with our (FAR less historically accurate) hobby because you were offended by someone playing the Black Knight in jousting!

It's a game, okay? Can we put this to rest? Mike already snarked with it...it's a nonstory and should tell you how "responsible" the MSM is in slathering it all over the place. Jeezzz...

And then, once you have provided the Re-enactment group with a realistically Uniformed (also expensive, difficult to obtain and maintain) character, that you might also repeat the favor to the group since they have so few of the less popular characters to Re-Enact against. And in this way, help more people learn about History and it's many facets.

I suppose you are so incredibly insipid and incapable of differentiating between Actors and their Roles that you would have Michael Fairman arrested and executed after Fox aired the episodes Train Job and War Stories.

If you really are not a retard, you should be insufferably ashamed of yourself. Of course, if you really are a retard, you probably won't be ashamed of yourself and we then would not expect an apology from you for making such a moronic knee-jerk reactionary comparison. You could then keep company with your equal, Kwicko.

Shit. I meant Raptor. I get them mixed up so much...the only difference is Wulf rarely makes ANY sense, nasty or otherwise, which should have clued me in immediately. Mea culpa.

And yes, JSF, everything you said, too. It should all be said LOUDLY to every media who ran with the story. I'm really pissed off that MSNBC picked up on this (even MADDOW, who I usually at least somewhat respect). It was all over the news last night and made me want to SPIT!

I have friends in a Celtish group, I've participated in the Ren Faire (as I said), and I have friends in SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism). Reenactments pride themselves in being historically accurate FAR more than any of these, they make us look like kids playing dress-up in comparison (tho' we try for historical accuracy in our own way), so I respect them. To see the entire activity essentially trashed this way pisses me off.

There you go, enemies mine; I just lashed out at MSNBC, that should give you a jot of satisfaction. I'll always call 'em as I see 'em. There is NO excuse for it, and I tapped out a few choice words in several directions, I assure you.

Oh, by the way, doesn't this provide a conundrum for anyone who was engaged in reenacting the Civil War? Weren't horrific things done there? It's a problem, because if it happens in the SOUTH, anyone portraying a Yankee (or, gawd forbid, a black soldier!) surely shouldn't be allowed to hold office; in the North, anyone portraying a Confederate, or slave owner, or, or.... Right?

Oops, what about the Revolutionary War? Surely anyone portraying a BRIT in any kind of reenactment of THAT war should immediately be deported, don'tcha think?? We should get Homeland Security notified of that one...

Gee, it's a mess all over, come to think of it. How about those who reenact Roman times? Or Medieval? Or ANY other? Think about it...surely there are "bad guys" in every conceivable reenactment to pick on if you look hard enough...

Mike, it is damned IRRELEVANT. I already posted the link to one group which does exclusively Waffen SS in reenactment.

There are many: http://www.wiking.org/ It's dedicated to "all World War II German reenactors
and students of German World War II military history"
Quote:

The 5. SS Wiking reenactment group is a non-profit, nonpolitical organization dedicated to the preservation of the history of WW II and the lifestyle of the German combat soldier (specifically Waffen-SS foreign volunteers).
Their disclaimer reads:
Quote:

This page or anyone involved in its creation, or members of reenactment groups listed here, are in no way affiliated with real, radical political organizations (i.e., KKK, Aryan Nation, American Nazi Party, etc.) and do not embrace the philosophies and actions of the original NSDAP (Nazi party), and wholeheartedly condemn the atrocities which made them infamous. May the victims of this unspeakable horror rest in peace. As we portray the German combat soldier, we are only interested in recreating his daily life, furthering our understanding of what it took to be a soldier, and at the same time having fun reliving history. We honor the men (and women) who really experienced the war, and we salute their courage and loyalty to put their lives on the line in defense of their native soil, no matter what nationality or government.
Or how about http://www.9thsspanzer.com/ - The Waffen SS Panzer Division, whose front page reads
Quote:

The 9th Reenactment Society is a group of non-political enthusiasts of history. We portray combat soldiers of the 9th Waffen-SS Panzer Division "Hohenstaufen" at public displays and at private reenactments. We are not a neo-nazi organization, nor do we subscribe to the ideas, ideals, goals, or aspirations of any extremist or far right-wing groups, nor are we affiliated with any such organizations. For the hobby of reenacting to function, both sides of the conflict must be represented. As such, we have taken on the role of an elite German formation of World War II.

World War II was the largest, most deadly conflict in human history. The effects of that conflict are still felt today, over 60 years after the last shots were fired. The cost of victory was staggering, as some 50 million people worldwide lost their lives. By engaging in living history and reenactments, we hope to keep the history of this dark period alive, and to help educate the public about what America's enemies looked like and why victory over them was such a monumental achievement. Sadly, many in America today have little to no connection with the past. Our group, and dozens like it, hope to help folks understand World War II, its impact, and its relevance to modern day events.

Look, I know you want to hate this guy, and I don't choose to take any more time to try and enlighten you that there are many, MANY people around the world who enjoy reenactment in many forms, and there's a goodly number of groups who have chosen to take on the German side in one form or another. Believe me, glance at the internet; the number of groups who've chosen this or that to represent is myriad, among them all aspects of the German Army are represented.

Reenactment groups can't have any fun unless both sides are fairly represented, and the people involved study and learn about those they are representing. Those portraying neither side are inherently evil. If you can't grasp that, there's just no hope for it. It's being as deliberately blind as we accuse Wulf and others of being. You have to believe whatever you CHOOSE to believe. What I've presented are the FACTS, and there's far more of it on the web. Look for yourself.

Actually, it's indicative of your (and the media's) mentality that these groups have to have disclaimers all over their websites...people don't grasp what they're trying to do, so maybe you are just like others who don't understand.

Jezus, that one's just as bad. I notice the rag you got it off of calls ITSELF "Unfair. Imbalanced."

Yes, that's a reenactment of sorts, tho' it's not by a specific group that gets together for reenactment events, from what I can tell: "The event in question – dubbed “A Southern Experience” – was held last Friday evening at the Country Club of Charleston, hosted by the South Carolina Federation of Republican Women." Those two Black reenactors CHOSE to be there, to be historically accurate, and the rag not only mischaracterized them, the event, McConnell and everything else about it, they tied to a completely unrelated story as if the two were connected! It's bad journalism, it's not just slanted, it's titled "How Republicans Party", and it has absolutely nothing to do with what actually happened OR the intent of the people involved!
Quote:

State Sen. Glenn McConnell says a snapshot he posed for Friday in a Confederate general’s uniform with a pair of black re-enactors in dress from the slavery era shows how the ways of the segregated South are behind the state for good …

“What the ladies had put together was a smorgasbord of Southern culture,” McConnell said. “It was reflected in the dress, the historical accuracy of the performances and even down to the food. It was a wonderful, entertaining and educational night for those visitors. It showed the approach we have in this state of a shared history.

I would be really interested to hear how you'd react if it were the Carolina Federation of DEMOCRATIC Women!

You know what? You are actually demeaning the people in that picture who CHOSE to put on those costumes and portray history...you seem to be inferring that McConnel and the Republicans somehow either forced them to do so, or thought of them as slaves, or...what? I'd just LOVE to hear what those two people would have to say about your characterization of what they did. I think they'd be highly offended, at the least. But then, you're a Yankee, so they'd probably just laugh at you and tell you to go away.

Hell, I'm from California and I understand...why can't you?

Nobody "jumps up" dammit, Mike. People choose their parts--I know some who have entire outfits for several different characters, I had several myself. I didnt' take it as seriously as some did, but I've got a washer woman, an upper class Elizabethan woman, a gypsy...

I've never considered anyone I know as a true reenacter, because we don't work at being totally historically accurate and we make our own costumes and weapons so we don't spend the kind of money REAL reenactors do, but it's the same sort of thing.

People who have hobbies like this are serious about them, they want to be correct in what they portray--to a greater or lesser extent (we're on the "lesser" end, true reenactors on the "greater"). They make up a personna, what the person's history was, what kind of person they are, what their parents were like...it's a form of theater.

Now, the most likely thing in this last one you offered is that either the two Black people are reenactor hobbiests or did it for a lark...McConnell may be involved in reenacting, I dunno, but I'd bet it's more a rented costume for the affair or something. But the other one, that's about real reenacting, something he does for a hobby, and has nothing to do with his "empathizing" with Nazis. Why don't you find out more FACTS about it, I'd love to be convinced I'm wrong.

Gawd, there's just no getting through to you, is there? In other words, if an actor, like Anthony Hopkins, takes the role of some horrific REAL historic figure (you know who I mean), that's okay, it's not related to the actor himself at all. But if an AMATEUR is involved in a group that likes to portray history or something, they MUST have an AFFINITY for whatever character they take...the character is a reflection of THEM, and they should be judged accordingly. Is that it?

Wow. You're as bad when you're wrong as some of the most narrow minded among us! I'd never have believed it. Have you ever been involved in amateur theater or anything like a Ren Faire? If not, maybe you can be excused, maybe you don't understand. That's all I can come up with, but it's very saddening.

Well come on Mikey, if you're gonna play a bad guy, why NOT have as much fun as you can with it ?

Hell, me being an evil overlord and all, it's quite tempting to see if any of the WWII re-enactors around here need extra jackboots, cause I could prolly do a convincing 'scary officer', provided I never have to SAY anything... cause, well, that whole not knowing any german thing.

Hell, Niki, I could say the same thing to you about guns and gun enthusiasts. You're wrong, you're deluded about it, and you'll never get it.

I don't run around in a Nazi costume, playing shoot-'em-up in the woods and pretending I'm slaughtering Jews; I shoot at paper targets; I don't pretend to be killing real people. I leave those kinds of fantasies for Wulfie and this Iott clown.

Maybe someday the WILL reenact 'Nam, I dunno, it'd have to be quite a while in the future. But it's fair game, technically; 9/11 isn't, there's nothing to reenact and I think it will always be a sore spot even if there was.

Why? Why would 'Nam have to be "quite a while in the future"? Because there are still people alive who lived those horrors? I know people who fought in WWII against the Nazis, and they're DAMNED offended by this shit. They liberated concentration camps that fuckers like the Wiking Division ran things and slaughtered hundreds of thousands of "undesirables".

And why is 9/11 *NOT* "fair game"? Because it's a sore spot? Because it's too raw? I guess the Holocaust isn't a big deal anymore...

Does this dolt have a right to do this? Sure he does. But does that mean he SHOULD do it? Or that he should be elected to Congress for it?

It'll be interesting to see if he gets the Jewish vote. He's already lost the support of one powerful Jewish Republican: Eric Cantor, who said he doesn't support any of these things that Iott has participated in.

I'm with Kwicko on this one. I saw this guy interviewed Monday night by Anderson Cooper on CNN. He's a total idiot. He couldn't give a straight answer to Cooper's great questions. The guy reeks with hypocricy and ignorance concerning the Nazis. The only thing even remotely comparable to what the Waffen SS and SS Einsatzgruppen soldiers did in Eastern Europe and Russia during WWII would be the Japanese rape of Nanking. Read those details of what took place there (Wikipedia has much detail) for 3 weeks. Tell us if that historical event should ever be re-enacted.

And Niki, I guess I really *DON'T* "get it" with some of this stuff.

Yeah, if you're trying to make your living as an actor, you're probably going to be trying out for parts you don't necessarily want to play. Any evidence this guy is an aspiring actor?

At the Renaissance Festivals, are they trying to be REALLY authentic? Do they have a Grand Inquisitor, for instance? Are people actually dumping shit-buckets out of windows? Are there pigs being slaughtered right there in the mud, and are the Jews being run out of town? Are Protestants rounded up and tortured? Are Catholics?

Or do they focus on the more positive, "romantic" elements, and tend to leave out the really nasty, unpleasant stuff?

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Mike, you are black-and-whiting me about guns. I am not anti-gun. My views are more nuanced. So I’ll not respond to that except to say you’re wrong.

I have no doubt reenactments stay on the more “romantic” side in their way as well; I seriously doubt there is much rounding up of Jews, but rather focusing on military and battles, just as Civil War reenactment does, and Revolutionary War, and all the others. And actually, yes, there was a certain historical accuracy required by the Ren Faire. Our costumes had to be approved, even if we made them ourselves, we couldn’t use nails in building our booths, our wares had to be “time appropriate” for the most part. And actually, yes, people DID dump buckets out second-story windows. I don’t THINK any reenactment groups, and I know SCA doesn’t, focus on the uglier aspects of their time period. It’s an attempt to enjoy and provide historical perspective...as in entertainment, enjoyment, HOBBY. We DID have parades by the ultra-religious, condemning everyone, etc., but I don’t think anyone goes to those extremes.

‘Nam probably wouldn’t be popular because we didn’t WIN, which makes reenactment uncomfortable for those who lost the battles. I don’t imagine reenactment of WWII is very popular in Germany, nor would our Revolutionary war be particularly appealing to British groups. It’s a HOBBY, hobbies are supposed to be enjoyable.

9/11 wouldn’t be interesting to reenactors because there’s nothing to reenact! The things that interest people are those involving large numbers of people, so everyone can have a part to play; it’s a GROUP activity, usually very large groups...hence the interest in the Elizabethan period, Roman civilization, Greek, wars, etc.

JS: I know nothing of the man’s character; he may well be an idiot or anything else. My complaint merely was that to condemn him for having been part of a hobby in which literally millions of people worldwide (mostly in Western countries) engage by saying it proves he’s a Nazi sympathizer is asinine and wrong. Beyond that, I have nothing to say about his character (except no, I don’t like him). I will decry political attempts to attack people in this manner from any side...coming up with VALID negative information about someone is fine with me, but creating something out of something it is not is wrong and I will express my opinion as such.

I am defending the right of people to choose any character they want to indulge in a hobby which harms nobody. There are people everywhere who will be offended by SOMETHING, of course, but I don't acknowledge the rightness of those people condemning an activity which isn't harming them and isn't representative of the actual feelings of the original participants. I have no DOUBT there are those who are offended by Ren Faires, despite the fact that they are definitely a romanticized view of the Elizabethan period.

My stance is "judge him on something valid, don't manipulate the truth to make a story."

Not that kwicko will ever comprehend, but KKK members would have a much easier and cheaper costume, same for slave or slave trader, or even the African-American slave capturer, so anybody new to the game and low on funds would be attracted to those roles as a way to participate.
I recall that for many black actors, playing a slave was the only way to remain employed in Hollywood - and in the Zohan movie it is mentioned the only roles for middle-eastern actors is as terrorists or cabbies. Likely kwicko thinks none of these films should be made, or nobody should fulfill these roles.

Niki, I am confused by your use of the word character. First above paragraph seems to assume I meant "character" as a measure of a person. Second paragraph, you also use the phrase "character they want to indulge in" which seems opposite your usage in the prior paragraph.

To be clear, I meant character as role, portrayal, part to play. The role you play is your character.

So you're saying these re-enactors are PAID to play these roles, then? That this is how they're making their living as actors?

JSF, hee, hee, hee, I didn't even notice that. I love the English language!

However, YOU missed that my response was to JS, not JSF...as in Jong, who posted his opinion of the man himself. I know little or nothing about the PERSON, and was only decrying the use of his choice of personna to play in a hobbie as a reflection of the man per se.

Your post was perfectly clear and I understood what you meant.

No, Mike, they don't have to be paid; people choose to do lots of things as hobbies which don't pay them. It doesn't make what they do any less valid.

I still say if we were to ask any of the Black people at that event, they'd most likely be pretty pissed off that you judged them as you did. I'd more bet they had a good time, and got a personal view/feel into SOME of what their ancestors experienced. I respect their right to choose a personna to immitate as much as anyone else's choice...except maybe someone who chose to portray Hitler himself or other specific figures like him, but as that is rarely the intent of reenacting, I doubt anyone has. Yes, famous generals and stuff are probably individually portrayed, but I think that's rare; I think the idea is mostly to give the flavor of the general situation.

I wish that person who posted about reenactment would come back and educate us about it; might help to clarify it for some who don't understand the concept. Mostly I just hope it becomes the nonstory it should have been in the first place; or it would be nice if some reenactors spoke up and educated the MEDIA!

Oh, damn, I guess that means no TV, movies, school plays, opera, stage plays...or is it only amateurs we can go after? Do you have to have a SAG card to be exempt from attack?

Hey, this place has FINALLY found something that actually gets my "panties in a bunch"! Congrats!

In fairness, it's not the ONLY thing around here that gets your panties in a bunch, it seems...

Again I ask, because nobody wants to answer - when y'all go to the Civil War reenactments, who jumps up to play the slave auctioneer? How many of your guys jump to volunteer to play the Klansmen during the Reconstruction part?

How many folks are aching to play Bin Laden in the Tora Bora reenactments? Who's volunteering to put a bunch of bullets in Pat Tillman in the reenactment of his murder?
