Hello,

I worry about us, sometimes.

Someone eats a corn-dog and our response it to titter about the perceived phallic nature of the imagery. I wonder if all cultures everywhere are this immature, or whether it is merely ours?

Dude, this is the internet - something I firmly believe has after a fashion become the collective consciousness of mankind, which is also why it's fulla porn, you think about it.

I find myself perplexed that this comes as a surprise to you after Clinton damn near singlehandedly brought cigar smoking back into the public consciousness in a similarly eerie-perverted kinda way.

Honestly though, my first reaction when folks started going on about the phallic nature of the image was "Huh, must be getting ready for a trip to Israel..", cause I am still bitterly pissed that the first goddamn thing an american politician is required to do in order to be considered a relevant competitor is to go prostrate themselves before a pack of foreign nationals which do nothing but spit in our face and stab us in the back at every opportunity, laughing up their sleeves at our gullibility all the while...
Which reminds me EXACTLY of that scene with Nandi in "Heart of Gold", only we're the ones on our knees, grrrrr.

(ETA: Yes Story, that's EXACTLY the image that brought the former paragraph to mind.)

Sorry to wander topically, but for a fact, that WAS the first thought in my mind.

Anyhows, the twisted nature of the american sexual psyche comes from the distortion and suppression of natural impulses via a certain ludicrous puritanical idiocy forced on folks from an early age in combination with the peek-a-boo titillation of mainstream media, and when you deliberately suppress a natural human impulse, the more that you suppress it, the more twisted the form in which it's finally gonna express itself, and it WILL express itself, just like a tree root does to a sidewalk - all that the ridiculous attempts to crush it succeed in doing is warping it, part and parcel of why americans as a whole are so pyschologically fucked up in comparison to other societies.

*snort* - most folks know that our forefathers came here fleeing religious persecution, but what most never realize is just how rightly those throwback puritan fuckheads deserved it, just how much of a goddamned blight they were upon civilized society...

To deny ones own humanity, to attempt its suppression and destruction, is a form of pyscho-social suicide - and I really wish those hypocritical puritannical pricks would just bloody well get ON with it instead of attempting to forcibly inflict it on the rest of us...
Which they won't, cause behind closed doors they're worse than us, and revel in it, then in their self-hatred and guilt, project those impulses onto US and attempt to levy punishment, cause their fucked up psyche can't admit to being the monsters that they are.

Anyhows, stuff like this is inevitable, a natural consequence of letting the insane control our society.

It's true. We ARE from Puritanical stock; the people who built this country, set its standards, wrote its first laws, etc.

The world DOES laugh at us, if you didn't know before, I'd be surprised. And no, many other countries AREN'T like this. Our commerce is built on titillation, look at advertising. That's true in most countries, but in other countries they're OVERT about it, they don't have censorship boards which debate for hours over whether to show this or that, to say this or that, they don't beep language out, they don't treat sex education like it was syphillis itself or something, and frontal nudity is treated the same as any other kind of nudity. We are and always have been a fucked-up, prudish country where we love titilation, but demonize explicit sex (even tho' a high percentage of us enjoy watching it, we do it everso quietly). Does anyone not already know this?

And of course those in the public eye suffer the very most from it; if they do or say anything which can be construed as even slightly "offensive" to our eyes, it's headline news; if they do or say anything which can possibly be construed as sexual, the media grabs it. It's not the media that's creepy; it's just REFLECTING OUR SOCIETY.

Just to cause trouble, I'm going to agree with anthony. There has been an over amount of ridicule towardsthe female candidates, bachmann, palin and clinton, that would not have been tolerated if it was towards obama and cain. That, is worrisome. That someone gets photoshopped is not.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

I feel like America is stuck in junior high lately. A lot of kids go through this phase when they're twelve or thirteen where everything suddenly has this grotty double meaning if you look at it a certain way. What I can't figure out is why people don't grow out of it, or at least learn to keep it to themselves. Our society seems to get worse and worse about this as time progresses. Note that other societies have been grottier than ours in the past, this is a cycle of sorts. Not everything that occurs to one has to be shouted from the rooftops, its a corndog people, grow the rut up. That's what I say. I know people/have friends who do this stuff, its embarassing.

I took it as a reflection of the lack of respect people feel for these candidates, at least the public image of them. After listening to them speechify, immature responses seem appropriate, equal to how they seem to feel about us.
