Dunno if anyone's posted about it before, but it sure blew my mind! We get these big guys in SF every day, and man, they are incredibly big! To think of one on its side is incomprehensible to me, my mind just can't grasp it.

One of my first thoughts was why didn't more people jump in, since I think of Mediteranean waters as "warm", but apparently not! I thought that also because they mentioned the "fly by", so logically people should have been able to see land. Look how close it was to shore:

But I see now it apparently happened at night?

It's also incredible to me that 4,000 made it out--I dunno how fast it happened, but that's a LOT of people to get away safely! That only 6 are known dead (tho' 10 still missing) seems amazing.

Thank you for posting this Niki, because to me its a huge issue. The crash was an accident, butI believe that the deaths were caused by negligence from the captain and crew, no one needed to die in this situation, especially the guys in their cabins with their life jackets on waiting to be told what to do. That is a horrible thing and I believe that people will get in trouble, as they probably should. They were so close to the shore and I believe that everyone could have been rescued if things had been handled right. I'm coming down hard on this unlessI see some evidence that there was no better potential outcome.

The Captain was not on the bridge when it hit the rock "BUT", he was in the life boat before most passengers. One of the dancers is being hailed as a hero, not any crew.

Raptor, the likelihood of having a cruise ship disaster is minimal. I've cruised before and it was fun. I was a little nervous at first, the movie Titanic being a formative experience in my girlhood, but we had a drill at the beginning and after that I never thought twice about disaster at sea. Its pretty fun, I went to Alaska.

Riona, I've always pictured taking a cruise in a more tropical setting... though I do get the whole Alaska thing.

My way, should the ship capsize or sink, at least I could swim to safety. Provided there was something to swim TO , and I wasn't too drunk. ( both probably unlikely )

Yeah, someday I'll cruise somewhere tropical. We chose Alaska because it was something my dad had always wanted to do, he's always liked Alaska, enjoyed visiting there. I enjoyed it very much but the only problem was that we couldn't swim because the pool wasn't kept up, they must have figured that they didn't have to take care of keeping it warm or anything because no one would want to swim while up in Alaska, of course I wanted to swim because I always want to swim, so the hottub had to suffice. My favorite things about the ship were being on the water all the time, having a room with a balcony, sailing up to glacier bay and seeing the glacier from our boat, and singing in the talent competition. I was 19 and I didn't win, but I had quite a cult following afterwords. :)

Those waters have been charted since time immemorial, there was no excuse for not knowing those rocks were there. And the crew totally screwed up because they hadn't done the safety drill with the passengers yet when this happened, they're supposed to do it within 24 hours of sailing but they didn't, cruise ships in the US usually do it before leaving port, that is what happened on my cruise, so we all got it out of our system and didn't worry about it because we felt confident about what to do just in case. Those people didn't need to die but they did and that is not okay. The Titanic happened a century ago this year, obviously this isn't anywhere as bad as that tragedy in regard to magnitude or loss of life but it isn't okay and be chalked up to human error, cockiness and bad planning too.

Auraptor, you seem like a solid dude to me... a veteran, self-reliant, etc.? I been on a cruise and I didn't much care for the excess, the toadying, the luxury or the sheltered "excursions." You could treat yourself to an allyoucaneat meal at a local restaurant, spend an evening in a nice motel and you'd get the same experience.

Mostly solid, yes. And I tend to the self reliant side, but I'm far from a survivalist. I have no bunker, or stores of seed from Y2K. And while I'm more or less pro military, I've never claimed to be a veteran. My dad was, and my nephew is in the military, and I thought about it, more than a few times, but chose another path. Just to clarify. I admire the hell out of Mal's character , but unlike him, I never volunteered for the war. Not yet, at least.

I was fortunate, no mystery illnesses or crashes for me and my grandma on our Alaska cruise.

Another thought occurs, the passengers probably couldn't jump because of the height of the cruise ship (some are 14 stories above the water) and the depth to the bottom (apparently high enough that on one side a rock could be lodged on the ship's fifth story).

I was also mildly disappointed by excursions and how expensive everything was, it really would be cheaper, less crowded, and less stressful to do things on your own. The only part of the trip that would have been difficult to see if I weren't on a cruise would have been Glacier bay, which is worth it, but there are other tide water glaciers around too.

I tried doing self guided tours eventually on the trip, all it takes is knowing how to read a bus schedule. However, the excursions or the cruise itself might still be good if someone with you has special considerations, my grandmother has a bad back and ankle, and so walking isn't easy for her.

Well, enough has come out now that we have somewhat of a grasp on the stoy. I heard that exchange between the captain and the Italian Coast Guard...pretty amazing. He sounds like someone who wasn't really capable or responsible and just wanted to get the hell out of there and save his own skin. Despite being ordered to get back on board, apparently he never did.

One couple was interviewed who survived, said he was in a lifeboat and people in the water saw him in amazement. I hope they throw the book at him, and someone should look closer into Carnival; a good number of things have gone wrong on their cruises which is coming to light.

I've heard that he was standing on shore, calling his grandmother to tell her he was okay, too. Sounds like a pretty ignorant guy who was just good enough to steer a boat, but little else.

Sad, sickening affair all around.

BP's Tony Hayward comes to mind. I can just see these 2 guys, on a yacht, sipping martinis, as oil gushes into the Gulf, and the Costa Concordia grinds across the coastal rocks, half submerged, passengers helplessly clinging to flotsam and jetsam.

You really can't make this stuff up... he TRIPPED into the lifeboat, and couldn't get out !

Amazing, isn't it? The guy can't even come up with a decent excuse...kind of shows how lame he is all by itself.

He is SO screwed; manslaughter (numerous counts); abandoning his ship; causing an accident on the high seas...that guy is going away for so long, his family will forget he exists. My heart goes out to those affected and their families.

Nice visual, by the way, made me giggle; you get the prize for the first giggle of the morning.

I wish V.2 would a) let me go back and put a title on posts where I screwed up, and b) at LEAST let me click on the thread. I have to go back to V.1 to even get into the thread. Bahh.

It actually gets better. A 25 yr old blonde was on the bridge, with the captain. This young lady, not the captain's wife, is a former cruise line employee, as a 'dancer'.

A blonde cruise ship worker seen eating and drinking with Captain Coward Francesco Schettino just minutes before the doomed liner hit rocks has denied that she is his lover.
Moldovan born Domnica Cemortan, 25, was seen by several passengers in high spirits with Schettino, 52, at dinner in the a la carte Club restaurant of the Costa Concordia half an hour before disaster struck.

Also, as the captain tripped, and fell into the waiting life boats, he apparently pulled in his 2nd in command. What ARE the odds, that both the captain and his 2nd in command would BOTH fall into a life boat, as their ship was going down ?
