If the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, then a way to change a man’s view or legislation on women’s rights goes through another route – Stay with me on this. In August of 2011, women of Barbacoas, Colombia launched a sex strike in their town in an effort to get the inadequate — and dangerous — road that links the town to the main province paved.

For over a month, the women withheld all sexual activity in a protest that was coined the “crossed leg movement”.

I have to admit, it would be hilarious to see this happen here. Wouldn't be terribly FUN, mind you, but it would be funNY.

It's hit facebook now, so time will tell if this movement has legs, and if it can keep them crossed. My bet is, if it takes off, us men will be needing most of the aspirin - and Viagra sales could really go soft!

"Nu-uh, I ain't puttin out till YOU do honey, you vote this down, THEN we'll talk about knockin boots, till then... talk to the hand, baby, talk to the hand..."

Thing is, consider the whole war on womens rights, in respect to these concepts, and you realize the bastards are working to pre-empt that exact threat by dropping women back into the status of chattel.

Gee, some might get the impression that men only see women as being good for one thing.

And here I thought the whole idea of women's rights was to view women as more than just sex objects, as real people, no one's property to be tossed aside, and having the same rights as anyone....

Huh, sounds kinda familiar.

I was going to mention Lysistrata. You beat me to it.

Or as Zoe Washburne put it, " Remember that sex we were going to have ever again?"

The more things change, the more they stay the same... And still funny, and still true...

Good! Then why are we still talking about this ?

Well, since I'm the one who typed it in the first place, I fail to see the reason why I need to post it - anywhere.

Actually, in the story, the Lysistrata gambit fails because the men are so superior and in control of their emotions and women are sex-crazed animals who always want sex even when they say no.

Ancient Greece kind of was awful.

Well, if men want to prove to women that they view them as being more than just sex objects useful for just one thing, then what better way to remove that one thing from the equation, and put men in a position to have to deal with women on the issues?

And if women are tired of being viewed as being only good for one thing, this gives them the chance to take away that one thing.

As Bolivia showed, it only took a month before the men caved completely.

Rush caved far quicker, looks like.

One might infer from all of this that women only have sex with men out of duty and not out of need. Some of us have our own itches that need to be scratched from time to time as well, you know.

As do men, but we can put off scratching that itch for a bit if it's for a greater good, can we not?

Wouldn't that be something?

In the meantime, if men - CONSERVATIVE men - have decided to make a weapon of women's reproductive systems, using them as a cudgel to beat women down with, then I find it only fitting that women take that weapon from these men, and withhold it from them.

Ancient Greece kind of was awful.

That's not how wiki remembers it:

"A man soon appears, desperate for sex. It is Kinesias, the husband of Myrrhine. Lysistrata instructs her to torture him and Myrrhine then informs Kinesias that she can't have sex with him until he stops the war. He promptly agrees to these terms and the young couple prepares for sex on the spot. Myrrhine fetches a bed, then a mattress, then a pillow, then a blanket, then a flask of oil, exasperating her husband with delays until finally disappointing him completely by locking herself in the Acropolis again. The Chorus of Old Men commiserates with the young man in a plaintive song.

They go off to fetch the delegates; and, while they are gone, the Old Women make overtures to the Old Men. The Old Men are content to be comforted and fussed over by the Old Women; and thereupon the two Choruses merge, singing and dancing in unison. Peace talks commence and Lysistrata introduces the Spartan and Athenian delegates to a gorgeous young woman called Reconciliation. The delegates cannot take their eyes off the young woman; and meanwhile, Lysistrata scolds both sides for past errors of judgment. The delegates briefly squabble over the peace terms; but, with Reconciliation before them and the burden of sexual deprivation still heavy upon them, they quickly overcome their differences and retire to the Acropolis for celebrations."

It is a comedy. I can't vouch for ancient Greece, but if that were to happen here and now (depending on where)?

Ah. I guess I figured it was more taking control of the war coffers then the actual gambit that worked, considering how most of the women really couldn't get their act together.

I think we're both half-right. In the play it worked, and in the Greek times, it was a comedy because no one would have THOUGHT it would work.

We read the play in college, and as I recall it was quite difficult for the women to stick with their committment to no sex, they did it, but it was _reallllly hard. Make of that what you will about Greek society.
