Wow, a beaurocratic screw up. Stop the presses!

It's not right, and now that it's hit the press, it will stop. No big deal.

Bet you'll try to blame this on Obama, too. Plenty of wingnuts already are.

Agreed. And there was another story, of a some guy doing the same thing. Again, in Michigan.

Quote:

AUBURN, M.I. (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - A Michigan man's fantasy became a reality when he hit a big lottery pay day, but the new millionaire isn't giving up his welfare check.

Leroy Fick was on public assistance when he took home a two-million dollar prize last June.

Food stamps are a federal program and are based on a person's gross income.

Lottery winnings are considered liquid assets and don't count as income and Leroy says he doesn't feel bad about being rich and staying on welfare.
Fick says his pay day isn't all that great, saying the IRS took more than half of his winnings.

Still, many who need public assistance say he is mocking them and the system.

If you are posting these to start a conversations about fraud and abuse of the system I'm all ears. We do need to cut down on abuse to save money and to make sure people who do need help get it. You will get no argument from me if you want to talk about ways we can do that.

I think on Wall Street they call such liquid assets "capital gains", and they don't even get taxed as income!

Which plays into the problem of how assistance is doled out in this country, less on need, and more on inane rules which are designed to give away as much of our $ as possible. This girl has no job. She's won half a million dollars, yet her entitlement mentality is that she's owed MORE money, from the govt, because " she's got bills to pay."

O.o

Well dayum, missy... welcome to the grown ups table. Maybe you need to go back and sit at the kiddie's table, and we'll bring you your food, pre cut into bite size pieces.

Mich.: $1M lotto winner cut from food assistance

Thursday - 3/8/2012, 8:33am ET

LINCOLN PARK, Mich. (AP) - State officials say a Detroit-area woman who won a $1 million lottery prize but continued to get food stamps has been removed from the food assistance program.

The Michigan Department of Human Services said Wednesday the lottery winner no longer was getting benefits. It followed a report this week from WDIV-TV in which 24-year-old Amanda Clayton of Lincoln Park acknowledged continuing to get $200 in monthly food aid after her September win.

Her mother, Euline Clayton, tells The Detroit News her daughter didn't break any laws.

Legislation in Lansing would require lottery and other gambling winnings to factor into eligibility for government food assistance programs. The legislation comes after a Bay County man last spring said he continued using food stamps despite winning a $2 million lottery prize in 2010.

Good. I know the story was getting national play and even heard it brought up here on the local news as well.

Now maybe the young lady can go get a part time job, or something. Earn enough to pay her power and cable bills, at least, and figure out wth she wants to do w/ the rest of her life, now that she's not on the public dole any longer.

Note to self: I wonder how long Anthony will continue with his childish, moronic persecution of others whom he falsely accuses of things for which they're not guilty.

“I feel that it’s okay because I mean, I have no income and I have bills to pay,” she said. “I have two houses.”…

“It’s just hard, you know. I’m struggling,”

Mentality of a 1/2 MILLION $ Lotto winner, who still wanted free govt hand outs.

She's a 24 yr old, who owns 2 houses, a brand new car, and doesn't work.

BTW... who pays for this girl's birth control ?

Note to self: I wonder how long Anthony will continue with his childish, moronic persecution of others whom he falsely accuses of things for which they're not guilty.

Apparently, Storybook thinks I'm a " dumb redneck motherfucker" because I don't cater to extreme, far Left wing views and socialist dogma. So be it.

It is the mentality of the poor. They see money, even large sums of it, as something that they will not have for very long. That is because they live dollar to dollar. They do not know how to handle large amounts of money, nor do they have anyone to teach them.

I don't know this girls social status. She doesn't come off as a debutante. But I think it's more human nature, to grab that which is offered you, and think about whether you NEED it later on, after you've already secured it. She's only 24. That's still a child, in some regards. ( well, according to Obama, 26 is still a child ) But she seems to have no grasp of what she has, what she wants, or how to deal with it all. I hope she gets her self set on a better path, but to be honest, she'll likely burn through this money in a year or 2.

I was speaking more about poor people in general. There is a mark difference between how a person that has been poor all their lives thinks as compared to someone that has grown up rich, or at least well off.

When I brought up Michelle Bachmann, a congresswoman who receives $174,000 per year AND free healthcare AND a pension for life for having served a two-year term, and mentioned that she also took over $250,000 for her family "farm", plus poguey money for each of the 23 kids she fostered, PLUS federal welfare money her husband received from Medicare and Medicaid, I was met with a response along the lines of "Well, she's done nothing illegal, so she's due whatever she can get."

Goose sauce = gander sauce.

What did these people do that was against the law? If you have something, charge them.

Indeed, and working with very broken and deprived people, as well as having seen many a hard time myself, that does leave its mark - Wendy has this thing where she compulsively checks the fridge like every twenty minutes to reassure herself that there's food in there, and I tend to stockpile reserves of things which are important to me no matter how plentiful they are - for when you've been reduced to nothing, or damn near it, time and time again by circumstances so far out of your control they're practically divine intervention, you develop certain habits and viewpoints which those who haven't faced such tragedies will NEVER understand...

And when ya got next to nothing, when you've lived that way, parting with ANY of it is counter to every instinct you have, no matter how much you have at the time - in fact the ONLY reason I tend to share, to overcome that instinct, is because my humanity, my NEED to prove out as not-a-monster, is stronger than those impulses.
Many folk are not so fortunate.

And I was speaking more about the general concept of 'free' give aways. Like when you go to the mall, and there's a stand there with free samples. Doesn't matter what the product, but folks will almost always take some of what's being offered. Go back the next day, they may take some more. The next day, they say , sure, why not ? And take some more. However, the next day, when the stand is no longer there, folks are wondering...hey! Where's mys stuff! It's easy to get 'hooked' on hand outs.

I can see that. Most would come to the understanding after another moment of thought that it was never "there stuff" and they were not entitled to it. Some will not.
