Believe in the bible or not, this isn't the place to bash Christians. Even if you have some valid points, spewing this short of venom, in a National High School Journalism Conference ( sponsored by the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association ) is completely out of line.

Odd, but no where in the tirade against the Bible did big, bad Danny boy come out and say 1 word against the Quran.

Gee, I wonder why.

Fucking coward.

More far, extremists Left wing lunacy from the Obama crowd.

Yep.

Could have made the point that some stuff in the Bible doesn't fit with things we've discovered in the 2000 or so years since it was written without insulting pretty much all Christians.

I'm an agnostic, and I'd have gotten up and left as well, to protest his bigotry.

Also note he didn't mention which President signed the Defense of Marriage Bill into law.

This is the guy who was the source in creating the alternate definition to Rick Santorum's family name.

Real class act there Obama sidled up with, huh?

Of course, bullying, name calling and intimidation is what this thug administration is all about, so it only fits.

You say he's Obama's anti-bullying czar - can you provide some sort of cite for that? Any evidence that he's got any kind of official government position in Obama's administration?

Or are you just making things up yet again?

Savage is behind ( no pun intended ) the 'It gets better ' program. This WH is fully on board w/ that program, with videos being submitted by Obama, Biden, H.Clinton, and a long list of those in the admin.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/issues/it-gets-better

Striving to stop bullying is a noble thing. However, not just gays are bullied. But from how this administration pushes that agenda, as it seems that's what they're speaking out against the most, it's as if bullied gay and lesbian kids come first, others ...well, they'll get back to you later.

Quote:

The Anoka-Hennepin School District pledged Monday to improve the treatment of gay and lesbian students as part of a settlement that closes a long legal chapter in its struggles over bullying and sexual orientation.

The 5-1 school board vote, which resolves both a federal civil rights investigation and a lawsuit filed last summer by six former and current students, was received with cheers and hugs among plaintiffs and their supporters. The suit had said the district did not adequately respond to persistent physical and verbal harassment based on real or perceived sexual orientation.

The settlement creates a five-year partnership between the school district and the federal departments of Justice and Education to help create programs and procedures to improve the school climate for all students.

http://www.startribune.com/local/north/141427303.html

Which is all well and good, but for Savage to launch into this hissy fit over Christians, and then calling them 'pansies', for not putting up w/ his b.s., is the height of hypocrisy, and completely counter to his alleged 'anti-bullying' program.

Even as an atheist, this clip makes clear that Savage is more interested in mocking and ridiculing anyone who believes the bible, on any level.

Beyond disgraceful.

Or the Bohemian Club Yearbook, that nice book about jews and presidents performing snuff kiddie porn to Molech.

Well, for one, this 'stoning' he's so fond of bringing up, concerning virgins and such, actually still does occur in Muslim countries, like Iran. Gays, when they ARE acknowledged to exist, are often publicly executed there as well. Yet he's directing his vulgarity squarely on Christians ?

You honestly think this sort of language and tone has ANY place in this setting, in a conference against bullying?

Yes I did. I watched from the beginning, then skipped some of the middle bits and went to the end to where he apologized. It was too late and sounded hollow (I wonder how many people were still there), like he started realizing he completely misjudged his audience. I just don't see you caring about this except that it's within Obama swinging distance. And maybe you don't like gay people.
As far as "putting gays first," I think the original Obama video was in response to gays being bullied resulting in deaths, so it's logical. Unless you don't like gay people.

Yes. Maybe I don't like gay people. A CLASSIC distraction tactic here.

This has ZERO to do w/ gay teens, gay adults or anyone 'gay'.

First, this has to do w/ a Obama supported movement, and the leader of this movement, Savage, blatantly using a forum of anti bullying to openly and shamelessly bully one particular group. Anyone pretending NOT to see the hypocrisy here, and who can't acknowledge the juvenile actions by this individual, isn't worth my time.

Second, teen age bullying extends well beyond just those kids who are gay. But, by promoting GAY bashing as some great cause, above and in front of the bigger issues teens face, is pandering and promoting the gay agenda. Sorry, but that's just how I see it. You can send the same message, to ALL teens and include gays, ( and you'll still piss off some religious folks - tough ) and your message can be delivered in a more sincere, constructive way. However, trotting out this idiot child, who those a tantrum on the monitor and bashes Christians, collapses his entire message.

If gays just wanted to be accepted and treated like everyone else, then this isn't the way to do it. In fact, he's only dividing us all the more. Which appears to be exactly what the Left loves to do best. Speak out against us, or anything we say, then you're anti-gay.

Welcome to the Obamination.

Well for one thing, I'm not entirely sure of the makeup of the audience, and the fact that it sounded like a good portion of the audience was pretty much in agreement... What I take issue with more than anything was his confrontational attitude in front of a mixed audience, he let anger cloud what could have been a rational discussion...

So "head of the Department of Education's Office of Safe and Drug Free schools" used to be the "Anti-Bullying Czar". Now it's the guy who launched the "It gets better" campaign as an outreach to homosexual youth. Any more people you want to call by that 'official title'?

I guess they figure Obama should spank him personally...or something. And trash the whole program, of course.

What's truly amazing is that you make such claims without a shred of evidence.

Name names. Who here is making excuses & apologizing for Mr. Savage? Certainly not I. I merely pointed out that you were being rather cavalier with the facts when you claimed that Obama had appointed him anti-bullying czar. You've yet to produce any evidence to back that claim, too.

I see a pattern here... You make wild-ass claims based on nothing at all, and then run away when asked to support your claims with facts.

I'm not disputing what Dan Savage said; I'm disputing what YOU said. You can't seem to figure that out, so I have to explain it to you the way I would to any other dull child.

I don't know WHAT KIND of High School, what KIND of assembly it was, and WHO all was there, as it seemed there were too many adults there to simply be teachers... I gather neither do you. It could have been an alternative school, a journalism class, ect...Maybe there was opposing POV offered... I don't know.... As to the motivation for cheering, I'm sure they had just as much opportunity to say nothing or to disapprove of what was said, but CONTINUED to cheer.

Also, I'd say the guy wasn't so much acting like a child as he was acting on his anger. In that way maybe we are all child-like at one time or another, yes? I'm sure he has taken quite a bit of abuse from people who should have no imput in his life, just as I should have no say in yours, n'est pas? You take arguments here willingly. Some people don't want to argue, or have anything to do with others opinions but are forced to find some way to deal.

HKCAVALIER

Hey all,

Well shoot, I guess I gotta come on out and say it: I’m perfectly fine with what Dan Savage said to these high schoolers, including using the phrase "bullshit in the Bible" several times. What high schoolers need from adults is emotional honesty and rational discourse, and Dan Savage modeled both in his presentation. It is not irrational simply to call out the Bible on its various insanities or to express anger at the way the Good Book has been used to justify violence and oppression.

There is bullshit in the Bible. Everyone knows it and everyone ignores their own version of it. It’s a hallowed American tradition going back at least to Thomas Jefferson who took all of what he considered the Bible’s bullshit out and printed it as “The Jefferson Bible.” The Bible did get slavery wrong (as did much of the human race for millennia) and it did get human sexuality wrong (ditto). The truth hurts, but it’s not bullying.

I gotta say I'm kinda shocked at how prissy some folk here are about "how to talk to teenagers." Really, "bullshit" is off the table for teenagers? Anger is off the table? Most of the teenagers I know are pretty angry people and use any word they feel like. Are y’all familiar with Dan Savage? He is invited to speak to teenagers and college students on a regular basis and he always talks like this. As Stephen Colbert would say: the market has spoken!

And since we’re here, I didn’t think he was trying to be remotely sincere with that apology. He was being HIGHLY ironic, considering the actual beatings and murders that are the subject of his talk. His “beating up the Bible” was merely rhetoric. Does anyone here really think he was saying what he did about slavery and anti-gay bullying to intimidate the good Christians in the audience? Because that would be the only justification you could have for saying he was “bullying” anyone.

The irony I see is that it’s Muslims who are notorious for acting like criticism of their holy book is an act of violence against their person. Now, AURaptor is supporting such posturing when it’s in reference to the Christian Bible. Irony.

And finally, when you look at these kids as they walk past the camera and presumably out of the auditorium in high dudgeon, only a few seem to feel obliged to show outrage. The rest are just walking and talking with their friends like it’s a fire drill. I strongly suspect that the boys and girls who walked out on a Dan Savage speech had planned to do so because they knew damn well what to expect. Ah, politics!

Anyway. Carry on.

Apparently not very good ones. You, on the other hand, are taking drugs so powerful that they actually led you to believe that Dan Savage had been appointed some kind of "czar" position by the White House. Seems some of the side effects are intense paranoia and fear, because every time I've asked for any evidence supporting your insane claims, you've either run away or tried to change the subject.

I disagree HK. When part of your audience walks out on your presentation then I say as a speaker you've failed. I don't have a problem with "bullshit" as in "he used a dirty word around kids, oh my!" more that in using it in the way he did (preachy) he lost the part of the audience that he really needed to reach. The ones staying behind, cheering, they already get his pov. Once the others got up and walked out (even the ones that just see it as an excuse to cut out) he's no longer able to share his message with them. Those are also the ones that will go home and tell their parents, "some gay guy told us the bible was bull shit," and turn some of those adults into Auraptor-like knee jerk Obama haters missing the message about bullying completely. "how dare he, how dare my school, my taxes paid for that..." He completely missed with his approach.

You can't even stop blubbering long enough to see that almost everyone in this thread agreed with you that this guy went about things the wrong way, can you? Did you see that?

So the next 4 years... just more of the same? It's going to be, "it rained yesterday... f*cking Obama!" Or just "effing Obama!" What's so funny about the party that can't shoot straight (Reps) is that you have the keys to the white house just sitting there. The majority of the people who voted for O. are disappointed in him, and could not vote for a second term or find a reason to jump ship, and all they do are the things that give his second term a lock: their strategy is solely based on attacking him (negative) and is empty of any kind of vision or positive ideals that inspire voters. And they put up even worse joke candidates. Incredible. A failed party, completely out of touch.

Are you trying to apologize and admit you were wrong when you claimed that Dan Savage is Obama's government-appointed czar?

At least he's making comments semi-related to the topic, even if not in the way you want them to be.

Contrast this to you, who in a recent Santorum thread ( http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?bid=18&tid=51541) never even aknowledged the topic of the thread - even after being asked to stay on-topic, and instead posted a series of completely unrelated attacks on Obama.

Storybook, I did comment on the topic of that thread. You just didn't like my pointing out that Obama lies all that much more than Santorum ( allegedly ) lies.

Nothing Kwickie said was in any way about Savage's comments, his address to the student audience, or his selective attack on Christianity.

It was Christians, and Republicans, FYI, who used the bible to END slavery in this country as well. Funny, pansy ass left that bit out. ( Oh, I'm sorry... am I BULLYING Mr Savage ? Get over it. )

By my recollection, pro-slavery Christians in the South also used the Bible to
justify slavery.
As the Bible covers a whole lot of human behavior, it's been used to justify
many things; often on both sides of an argument.

Well, I guess you can use the bible any damn way you want to , huh? Which is one of the flaws I see in it , personally, but that's another issue entirely.

The bible speaks of slavery because, in the time it was written, slaves were a reality of the time and area, and had been for a very long time. ( Thank you Romans, and pretty much the rest of the old world. And it still is today, in parts of Africa, btw ). But the bigger point that Mr Savage missed, is that abolitionist Christians were every bit as committed to the cause of ending slavery, and took great personal risks to free slaves via the underground railroad. This selective recall by Savage, to vilify ALL Christians, is intentionally deceitful, intellectually dishonest and imo, cowardly. But then, Dan Savage is a mean spirited, hate filled prick anyways, so it only makes perfect sense.

ETA - Aside from calling attention to who this pansy ass Savage is, by tying him so closely to the Obama administration ( which he is, btw ), a couple of tidbits to remind everyone of just what a miserable, insufferable militant nut case this man is, here are some highlights -

On HBO's Real Time With Bill Maher July 15, 2011, during a panel discussion of the debt limit increase negotiations between the U.S. Congress and President Barack Obama, Savage said in a stand-alone remark, "I wish the Republicans were all fucking dead. "

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Savage#Controversies

( Ghandi, this guy ain't. )

He secretly joined the Gary Bauer campaign, in 2000, and tried to infect the entire staff and Mr Bauer himself, with the flu bug, by licking door knobs, pens, and other objects. He later 'claimed' he was only kidding, and didn't actually do those things.

He also registered and participated in the caucus, which was illegal, as Savage was not an Iowa resident. He was charged and pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of fraudulent voting in a caucus, and was sentenced to a year's probation, 50 hours of community service, and a $750 fine

And , as mentioned before, Savage google bombed Rick Santorum's last time, which directed searches on google to a vulgar definition, describing a graphic sex act.

And this is the primary guy whose movement the Obama administration backed , out of all the anti-bullying campaigns out there, and the one who got damn near everyone in the cabinet to make a video ?

Complete, total and colossal Obama FAIL .

Hey Pizmo,

I can see how you might disagree, but I think you and I understand the current state of the discourse differently. Gay people in this country are still second class citizens in many contexts, particularly in terms of being bullied and beaten to death on the strength of their sexual identities alone. So, the main purpose of Dan Savage getting up in front of any group to discuss gay bashing is for him to be a gay man speaking openly about gay bashing.

Because that’s his right and in America we recognize people’s rights. We are at a point in our history that exposure is most important. So, these kids were exposed to Dan Savage's ideas. Unedited, and undiluted. And now, thanks to youtube, the whole world has heard him.

And placing the responsibility on Savage to in effect "win these kids over" politicizes his speech in a way that constrains him from expressing ideas too "harshly" or too "emphatically" because such is likely to "upset" these innocent, bigoted children. Mustn't trouble the children with the ugly truth about being gay in this country and the CENTRAL role the Bible has played in the oppression of gays in this country.

So, to say that Dan Savage has failed as a speaker because people walked out on him is to pretend that bigotry had nothing to do with it. It is to say all these kids walked out solely because he was saying “mean things” about their holy book and no child should be subjected to such rudeness, no matter what the reason. It says that because Dan used a naughty word, these kids have no responsibility as citizens in good conscience to hear the gay man out. Fuck him if he can’t play nice. And, indeed, that’s what our nation has done to gay people time and again. Step out of line and we will step on you. He broke the rules in a game that was slanted against him from the get go.

And wasn’t this walk-out staged? Look at those kids in the video, most of them aren’t upset in the least. They’re just taking their cue and doing what they’ve been told. Is that not apparent? So, Dan lost these kids before he even took the stage.

Anyway, that’s how it looks to me.

So, at a conference of HS journalism students,on anti-bullying, all the Christians conspired to walk out of the gay man's speech, and timed it exactly to the point where he started trashing their religion ?

First of all, so what if they did ? Does it take away the significance of their act? Hell no. This man's answer to deal w/ bullying is to bully a bunch of HS kids himself. Kids who don't see things exactly as he sees them, and who haven't done anything wrong, to anyone themselves ? Sorry, but if anyone thinks that's the path to peace, harmony and understanding, you chose poorly.

Second, how on Earth do you even try to defend this guy and what he said ? There's a time and place for this sort of talk, but do you honestly think that a conference of HS journalists, THIS is going to be constructive ?

They don't look upset - in the way YOU might have been - but they're showing their dislike for this guy's message by walking out. Trying to dismiss the students and their actions, because they didn't throw a fit, start uttering profanities, hurling glitter bombs or the like, doesn't mean they were 'programmed', and were just following orders. Fact is, you just made an unsubstantiated charge, that this was 'staged' by them. Where's your proof ?

And judging by this militant activist's history, so what if it was staged ? He's already done enough to warrant such a protest before his petulant little hissy fit. Once he began his predictable hate speech, it was clear his agenda wasn't about anti-bullying, but to bash Christians. Good for the kids, for not putting up w/ this bullshit.

And isn't it funny, that if anyone on the Right does something in the way of a protest, it's " staged " and astro turf, yet when the Left does something, it's 'organic' and grass roots ? Welcome to life through the Left wing looking -glass. If anything, you have it 180 degrees wrong. The Left, far more than the Right, is programmed to act in unison. But continue to spin your lies, as you are wont to do.

This video is very telling. The administration's response is also very telling. I'm glad America can see these a-holes for who they really are.

No it is not to say those things (gah!), it is to say he failed to reach the kids he needed to. I do remember high school and I remember my high school brain did not like being lectured to. I got it at home and then in class - all day practically. I remember that the adults I listened to were ones I thought were cool. Dan is not being cool imho, not with these kids, not by attacking and lecturing. I think you're over intellectualizing something that is pretty simple imo. Pissing people off is not a great way to win them over.
Maybe a better voice would have been a repentant bully?
