Hello,

I agree with the author of this when he says students should have the right to say racist things outside the classroom without fear of reprisal from the government (in the form of a school.)

It is one of the core principles of our nation, and it oughtn't to be dismissed when it proves inconvenient. The fact that some schools were scrambling to find ways to punish students for what they said in their private lives is distasteful to me.

I'm less enthusiastic about the rights of scoundrels... and I wish that most of the free speech debate lately was less about protecting the rights of idiots to say idiotic things, and more about exposing unpopular truths. Same Sex marriage was defeated in North Carolina. Not just defeated but almost annihlated, an ammendment to their constituion (try and dig that one out) a place with a concentration of some the planets' best universities. But I guess we got one victory, some dumb ass can say whatever he wants to about soccer.

The rights of scoundrels matter.

If things get bad enough for long enough, you may find yourself the scoundrel.

Nothing popular or universally accepted needs protecting. As Freedom and Equality become less and less popular, defending scoundrels should become more rewarding.

What kids say off of school property isn't school's business, with the possible exception of cyber bullying and regular bullying of kids they met at school and making their lives miserable, but other than that it isn't school's business. And maybe bullying off of school grounds is legal business instead of school business, kids might be less likely to do it if they think they'll get in real trouble beyond a repremand from a teacher.

But yeah, people do have a right to be "racist" (I think the word is stupid, if we were living alongside elves or Klingons it would make sense, but we're all people, so we're all of one race anyway), maybe ethnist is a better word. Its yucky and doesn't really make sense, but its their right if they want to be that way. I also have the right to ridicule them for it because that's my free speech right, it works both ways.

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.
